The first meeting of the task force to study the impact of illegal immigration on Louisiana taxpayers is today. Denham Springs Representative Valarie Hodges is the chairperson of the task force and she says Louisiana receives more unaccompanied minors than Arizona and New Mexico combined.

Hodges says the purpose of the taskforce is to minimize the cost to Louisiana taxpayers for having illegal immigrates in our state. She says it’s difficult to know how many illegal aliens are in the state, which makes it difficult to get the federal government to reimburse Louisiana for educating undocumented children.

Hodges says the monetary cost isn’t even the most important aspect. She says people are killed around the country at the hands of illegal immigrants and sanctuary cities, like New Orleans, aren’t enforcing the law and putting citizens at risk.

A study out of the UC-San Francisco finds that a lack of sleep can determine your likelihood of catching a cold. Researchers found that less than six hours of sleep, impacts your immune system and increases your chances of getting a virus. Professor of Family Medicine at LSU New Orleans Dr. Herbert Muncie says it’s important to get at least seven hours each night.

Muncie says this study doesn’t necessarily mean the more sleep the better. He says if you’re sleeping more than nine hours then that might be a sign on another concern.

Former state lawmaker and ex-Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke plans to take legal action if New Orleans removes the Battle of Liberty Place monument. Its a 124-year-old structure that recognizes a group of prominent whites and ex-Confederates who fought against Louisiana’s biracial Reconstruction government. Duke made the comments as the french quarter commission voted to remove the monument…

The Battle of Liberty Place monunment is one of four monuments that New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu is seeking to remove. The New Orleans City council will have the final say. Duke says city leaders are trying to take away New Orleans heritage

There are residents who believe the Battle of Liberty Place represents racism and they say the monument was erected to support the institution of Jim Crow. Duke says if the city council votes to take it down, he’ll file suit to stop it…

Authorities have arrested a gunman involved in a shooting near Grambling State yesterday. Grambling police say 23-year-old Tre’Stevenson Jones has been charged with attempted second degree murder. The search for Jones caused Ruston High School to be on lockdown yesterday. No one was injured and authorities say a drug deal gone bad led to the shooting.

A commission that oversees the French Quarter voted today to remove the 124-year-old “Liberty Place” monument, because its a public nuisance. It’s one of four structures that New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu wants removed because of its connection with the Confederate Army. The city council still has to approve its removal.

There have been overdose deaths from too much powered caffeine and Ryan says several emergency room visits in Louisiana. His advise is to just stay away from this stuff…:

A Commission which oversees areas in the French Quarter voted today to recommend declaring the Battle of Liberty Place monument a public nuisance in order to have it removed. According to a report from the NFL network, Saints cornerback Keenan Lewis will be sidelined the next four to six weeks after undergoing hip surgery. The 29-year-old has been dependable as he’s started every game in his first two seasons in New Orleans. The injury to Lewis means Delvin Breaux and Brandon Browner could be your starting cornerbacks week one. But Browner is also dealing with an injury.

The LSU football team and the Head Health Network are partnering up to study how impacts to the head effect players. H-H-N President Curtis Cruz says 24 players will have sensors in their helmets this season and the sensors will relay information to the training staff when the player is involved in contact, to determine if the hit was serious enough to bring on a concussion…

Another brain eating amoeba has been discovered in Louisiana and DHH says this one is in Ouachita Parish in a North Monroe Water System which serves Sterlington. State Health Officer Dr. Jimmy Guidry says it’s a challenge for water systems to maintain a proper chlorine level through the entire system, especially during the summer…:

Grambling Police say they’ve arrested the driver involved in the shooting incident at Grambling, but they continue to search for another suspect. 23-year-old Tre’Stevenson Jones of Monroe, A GSU student, is charged with attempted second degree murder and careless operation. Investigators believe this was a bad drug deal incident on Grambling’s campus Tuesday. 20-year-old Zateriuus Minor, also a Grambling student, is wanted for attempted second degree murder.

Republican Scott Angelle is upset over the fellow Republican David Vitter supporting PAC commercial which accuses the Public Service Commissioner of wanting to “tax the internet” — or require companies to add state sales tax to online purchases. Angelle’s camp claims Vitter supported the state law in 1994 that does just that.

State Police has identified the woman who was killed while riding her bike in Tangipahoa Parish late at night. They say 35-year-old Ashley Thames of Robert was traveling on the US 190 Tangipahoa River Bridge when she was struck from behind by an SUV. She was pronounced dead on the scene. Investigators say there were no reflectors on the bike and it’s not expected that the driver of the vehicle will be cited.

The 30-second TV ad criticizes Vitter’s republican opponents, Scott Angelle and Jay Dardenne, for supporting tax increases. It’s been a quiet governor’s race as we are less than two months away from the October primary.
