Legislation that would ease pot possession penalties in Louisiana is just a step away from Governor Bobby Jindal’s desk for his signature. The Senate Wednesday approved a House Bill that would make possession of less than 14 grams of marijuana punishable by a max $300 fine and 15 days in jail. The Senate Finance Committee approves a bill that would increase the tax on a pack of cigarettes 64 cents which is 32 cents higher than what the House agreed to. The measure was one of eight revenue generating bills that passed the panel and now head to the full Senate.

The Louisiana Congressional delegation is requesting the Army reverse its decision to deny an Arlington National Cemetery burial for Louisiana National Guard Sergeant Thomas Florich. Florich was on a training mission on a helicopter off the coast of Florida in March that crashed and killed 11. The Army said Florich was not listed as “active duty,” so he was ineligible to be buried there…

An off-duty deputy with the Cameron Parish Sheriff’s Office was arrested last night after State Troopers found about 18 pounds of marijuana in his vehicle. Twenty-eight year-old Derek Nothnagel was booked on possession with intent to distribute marijuana, and use and sale of drug paraphernalia; along with other charges.

It looks like former Pelicans head coach Monty Williams has found a new job. Williams has reportedly been hired to be the top assistant for new Oklahoma City head coach Billy Donovan. Meanwhile, the Pels have reportedly hired Darren Erman as the team’s associate head coach in charge of defense and New Orleans native Robert Pack as the backcourt specialist. Erman served as an assistant with the Celtics last season and Pack was with Oklahoma City.

The Girls Top 28 state basketball tournament is headed back to Hammond. That’s the result of a vote by the LHSAA Executive Committee, which also awarded the boys state basketball tournament to Lake Charles for two more years and Sulphur retains the baseball tournament for another two seasons.

The Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s office says a man struck by a train remains in critical condition at a hospital in New Orleans. Investigators believe 55-year-old Reginald Chatman of Gray, was riding his bike when he fell onto the tracks and wasn’t able to move in time before he was hit. Chatman’s foot and right big toe was amputated. The investigation is ongoing.

Governor Bobby Jindal will be announcing his presidential plans on June 24th according to a top adviser. The Governor is set to announce his decision in New Orleans according to Timmy Teepel who will possibly be Jindal’s campaign manager for the likely bid. A presidential exploratory committee was launched by the Republican hopeful earlier this month.

The state House approves legislation that puts spending controls on the TOPS scholarship program. The Senate bill locks in the amount of the award at the 2015-2016 level. Instead of an automatic increase when tuition goes up, TOPS payments would need legislative approval to be increased. Amite Representative John Bel Edwards supports Senator Jack Donahue’s bill…:
