A recent poll shows Governor Bobby Jindal is less popular than President Barack Obama in Louisiana. But Jindal says that’s because he’s made some tough choices, which includes cutting state government spending and implementing important reforms like the statewide school voucher program…

And the governor, who has presidential aspirations, is also struggling in recent republican presidential primary polls.

State police say the Click it or Ticket campaign continues this weekend after five unrestrained motorists were killed last weekend in highway crashes. State police spokesperson Dustin Dwight says more than 400 tickets were issued for seat belt violations over the weekend, but unfortunately, that wasn’t enough to prevent fatalities…

Click it or Ticket is designed to emphasize proper seat belt use, the dangers of impaired driving and the importance of making good driving decisions.

The LSU softball team got off to a good start at the Women’s College World Series as the Tigers defeated Auburn six to one. The Tigers will play in a winner’s bracket game tonight at six against defending national champion, Florida. You can watch the game live on ESPN2.

US Senator David Vitter says he strongly supports getting Louisiana out of Common Core and PARCC tests. He says we still need testing and to be able to compare our students with students around the country…:

Public Service Commissioner Scott Angelle says he opposes Common Core after meeting with teachers and parents and others who are needed to make it work, but don’t believe it it…:

Areas along the Red River are bracing for an expected crest of 33 feet which the National Weather Service says is coming by June 5th to the Shreveport area. The Bossier Parish Sheriff’s office says residents could see flood conditions similar to 2009. Lt. Bill Davis says people living in low lying areas need to keep an eye on the rising water…:

Davis says this is also a time when neighbors should check on neighbors especially if you know someone who has special needs or a medical condition. He says they are making plans to inform residents, especially those south of Highway 527 who will likely be displaced by the high waters, to make necessary plans…:

Sandbags are available for residents and more are being made. Davis says they don’t encourage people to stay in their homes despite flood conditions, but if you choose to stay then stockpile water and plenty of canned foods…:

Ed Anderson, a journalist who covered the legislature, state government and many other stories for more than four decades in Louisiana with the Times-Picayune of New Orleans, passed away in Baton Rouge. Both Chambers at the Capitol each held a moment of silence for Anderson Thursday morning. He lost his battle with cancer at the age of 67.

Governor Bobby Jindal says if the medical marijuana bill that is moving through the legislature right now by New Iberia Senator Fred Mills makes it to his desk, he will sign it…:

Jindal also says he supports legislation to loosen penalties for those convicted multiple times on marijuana possession…:

Both matters are getting close to final legislative passage.

In the Senate Thursday lawmakers put a $60 million dollar fee increase on two House bills that would mean drivers pay $50 more in title fees when buying a car. Also being discussed is a nearly $40 increase in the cost of a driver’s license as part of ongoing budget balancing proposals.

Coach Paul Mainieri announces sophomore right-hander Alden Cartwright will start on the mound for the Tigers tomorrow afternoon. The Baton Rouge product will make his first start of the season, but he’s only expected to pitch a couple of innings.

The LSU softball team got off to a good start at the Women’s College World Series as the Tigers defeated Auburn six to one. Bianka Bell and Kellsi Kloss each hit home runs, while Emily Griggs has three hits. LSU as a team had ten hits on the day, which was enough offense for starting pitcher Carley Hoover. The Tigers will play in a winner’s bracket game tomorrow night against Florida.

LSU’s SEC home opener against Auburn will not be a night game. CBS will televise the game on September 19th, which means a 2:30 kick-off in what could be a very hot Death Valley. And it looks like the regular season finale against Texas A-and-M will be played on a Saturday. That’s because CBS has already picked Arkansas-versus-Missouri for that Friday after Thanksgiving.

And the SEC announces that the men’s basketball schedule is changing to three permanent opponents, which means the Tigers will play Texas A-and-M, Alabama and Arkansas at home and on the road each season.

If the Pelicans want to talk with Tom Thibodeau about their head coaching vacancy, they can now do it. Thibodeau was fired today by the Chicago Bulls after five seasons in the Windy City.

Saints head coach Sean Payton announced today that the Black and Gold will ahve a joint practice with the New England Patriots during training camp. It will take place at the Greenbrier in West Virginia. Payton says the joint practices will take place prior to the Saints hosting New England in week two of the preseason.

Plaquemine Representative Karen St. Germain’s bill overwhelmingly failed to get a two-thirds vote of elected members it needed to pass. St. Germain says HB 778 would help with the backlog in road and bridge projects facing the state…:

The measure didn’t get close to the 70 votes it needed to pass.

Chief Reggie Pitre says that money was supposed to go towards their Babe Ruth and Cal Ripken league’s account for things like supplies and uniforms from registration fees…:

The House did not agree to raise the state sales tax by a penny for road and bridge projects in Louisiana. The measure needed 70 votes to pass but the vote was 50 yeas and 46 nays. There’s a report that the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries indicate a young black bear has been spotted in woods in West Monroe. They believe he could have come down the bayou of the Ouachita River which is a little high right now. Agents are using live culvert bear traps with donuts to attract the bear and hopefully capture him to place in a more suitable habitat.

Senate leaders have decided to reconsider a House bill that would test state prisoners for HIV when they’re released to go home after the measure failed on the Senate Floor today. HB 191 overwhelmingly passed the House two weeks ago but the vote in the Upper Chamber today failed 18-15 but lawmakers say they will take it up another day.

The vote was 52 yeas and 42 nays and needed 70 to pass.

Two bills that are key parts to a Common Core compromise made it off the House Floor Wednesday. The votes were nearly unanimous and Governor Bobby Jindal is also backing the proposals. Lake Charles Representative Brett Geymann, who opposes Common Core, says he’s appreciative of the hard work that went into coming up with this legislation…

The measures go to the Senate, which is expected to go along with the bills.

In an effort to increase its international profile and boost enrollment numbers, Nicholls State University has signed an educational partnership with Galliano-based offshore giant Edison Chouest that will allow their employees and family members earn a degree from the school. University President Bruce Murphy says the deal will waive out-of-state and international fees for students connected to Chouest…:

Chouest has approximately 14,000 employees in over a dozen countries worldwide. Murphy says this agreement will bring more international diversity to the Thibodaux campus.
