According to the Army Environmental Command, Fort Polk has received the most supporting public comments of any of the 30 Army bases across the country facing military cutbacks.  Michael Reese, with Fort Polk Progress, says last year during this process, the military received about 8,000 comments with over half coming from Fort Polk…

He says out of about 110,000 comments received this year, over 34,000 comments supported Fort Polk.  The Vernon Parish Army base avoided significant cutbacks last year, losing only about 250 troops.  Reese says they learned last year that community support of the base makes a big difference…

The public comment period is the first step in the military’s force reduction process.  The report lists Fort Polk’s maximum troop reduction at 6,500, out of a current military population of just under 11,000.  Reese says the next step of the process is a public listing session in March…(Reese says the Army will make an announcement next June.)

According to the mayor’s office in Shreveport, Fire Chief Ronald Craig Mulford was fired Friday. Mulford has been on paid leave since being indicted in June on charges stemming from his handling of complaints against several firefighters under his command. Political analyst Elliot Stonecipher says there is a lot of cover up happening in this case but there are some things we know for sure…:

Assistant Chief James Thomas Carpenter was also dismissed today after an inquiry discovered that he also allegedly violated internal policies. Flu season is right around the corner and that means it’s time for your flu shot. Bill Schaffner with the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases says everyone older than six months of age should be getting a vaccination because there is no excuse not to do it.

Schaffner says you can get flu shots at any doctors office, clinic or even pharmacy. He says young adults get hit the hardest when it comes to getting sick because they are the hardest demographic to get vaccinated.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than 100 children lost their lives to the flu last season and 90 percent of them were not vaccinated. Schaffner says the vaccine is tailored to attack the viruses they think will be the most common during this season.

Spokesperson Melissa Matey says the St. John Sheriff’s Office received a call of a deputy involved in a domestic dispute brandishing a weapon. She says when officers arrived, they found that Lt. Nolan Anderson was armed…

She says when deputies arrived, they found that Anderson had fired several shots in the air, and he then turned the gun on the officers. Matey says, at that point, the deputies were forced to take action…

Survey results released by the Louisiana Department of Education show that future teachers need more time in the classroom. The survey polled more than 6,000 educators. Superintendent John White agrees, but says the extra time in the classroom should be used for teaching and not observation…

The survey found that half of teachers say they were not fully prepared for the realities of the classroom. White says it makes all the sense in the world that those preparing to be teachers, have taught under a mentor teacher…

Louisiana State Police say they are investigating the death of a 14-year-old high school freshman who was allegedly shot by a Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s deputy. The teen is identified as Cameron Tillman — a student from Ellender High School Trooper Evan Harrell says deputies got a 911 call around 5:30 Tuesday evening…:

A District Judge ordered today that businesses won’t have to pay BP back money the oil giant says was overpaid as a result of a flawed settlement money formula. BP said these companies who claimed the 2010 oil spill hurt their business should be forced to return payouts but the judge did not agree. Governor Bobby Jindal’s former Health and Hospitals Secretary Bruce Greenstein has been indicted by a grand jury for perjury. The charges stem from allegations Greenstein lied about having contact with a company he used to work for that was awarded a MAJOR state Medicaid contract. Assistant Attorney General David Caldwell:

Caldwell says Greenstein is accused of lying under oath about having contact with his former employer, CNSI, before a state Senate confirmation hearing and before the grand jury. A new state funded feasibility study found that tolls could pay for up to 50 percent of the $3 billion dollars it would take to complete I-49 South from Lafayette to New Orleans. Franklin Senator Bret Allain is one of the founders of the I-49 South Coalition which is pushing to make the project a reality. He’s disappointed the study didn’t show tolls would pay for a bigger portion of I-49 South…:

Allain says one of biggest parts of the project is construction of an elevated I-49 Connector through Lafayette which is estimated at more than $700 million dollars. The Louisiana Department of Revenue is gearing up to offer Louisiana tax payers another amnesty period.  Last year, the department was able to collect $452-million in delinquent taxes.  Revenue Secretary Tim Barfield told the Baton Rouge Press Club that many tax payers wanted to participate last year, but couldn’t afford to pay 100-percent of the tax…

This year, tax payers will be offered an installment plan to pay their delinquent taxes over seven payments.  Barfield said this year’s amnesty period begins October 15th and will end November 14th…

During the amnesty period, you will be able to settle tax debts with no penalties and only half the interest charged.  Barfield said they hope to collect at least $104-million during the amnesty period.  He says you may want to consider taking part in this or next year’s amnesty period if you owe taxes because it could be a while before it happens again…

The state Department of Veterans Affairs says they’ve been approved for a grant to fund a State Veterans Cemetery in Rayville. Secretary David LaCerte says the $7.3 million dollars will fund 100% of the costs to develop the cemetery on property donated by the Franklin family. The Vermillion Parish Sheriff’s office says two people were killed and a juvenile is in the hospital following a 4-wheeler accident. Sheriff Mike Couvillion says the crash involved 34-year-old Shawn Lalonde and 29-year-old Kyle Dudding and a 13-year-old at the intersection of Highway 35 and Clint Rd near Kaplan…:

Both Lalonde and Dudding were pronounced dead at the scene and the juvenile is listed in stable condition. Couvillion says the investigation reveals the ATV ran a stop sign and crashed into a ditch embankment…:

The St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s office says an Opelousas man is behind bars for misusing the emergency 911 line by calling it 18 times. Captain Megan Vizena says 63-year-old Olan “Arlen” Deville was requesting medical attention…:
