New Pelicans Head Coach Alvin Gentry believes he has a core group of players on the roster that have the potential of winning an NBA Championship. Gentry just had the opportunity to hoist the Larry O’ Brien Championship trophy as an assistant coach with the Golden State Warriors. Now Gentry will be a head coach for a fifth time in his career at the age of 60, and he’s ready for the challenge…

Tiger-rag-dot-com reports that an NBA team has told former LSU Tiger Jordan Mickey they are committed to selecting him in the first round on Thursday night. Most draft experts have Mickey going in the 2nd round.

There’s a break down in talks between the Louisiana High School Athletic Association and the Louisiana High School officials association over pay, which raises concern over who will officiate athletic events this fall. The officials association wants a pay raise, but LHSAA executive director Eddie Bonine is promising to come up with a new fee structure that would start in 2016. The officials association says they are tired of promises and they’ve only received two fee increases in the past 25 years. Bonine says he’ll come up with plan of action in the next day or so, on how to address this conflict.

In baseball…former LSU pitcher Nick Rumbelow has been called up to the Major Leagues by the New York Yankees. The right-hander from Texas gives LSU five former players who are now in the majors.

LSU’s Alex Lange has been named to the Baseball America Freshman All-American team. Lange went 12 and 0 with a 1.97 ERA this past season.

Tiger-rag-dot-com is reporting that an NBA team has told former LSU Tiger Jordan Mickey that he’ll be selected in t he first round on Thursday night, somewhere in the early 20s. Most draft experts have Mickey being selected in the 2nd round.

Former Purdue quarterback Danny Etling has tranferred to LSU. He’ll be eligible to play in 2016.

Nicholls State is mourning the death of former Colonel and Major League Baseball Player Darryl Hamilton. Police in suburban Houston say Hamilton was fatally shot by Monica Jordan in what appears to be a murder-suicide. Nicholls State baseball coach Seth Thibodaux says Hamilton was an amazing role model for young players…

He says Hamilton is likely the most successful baseball player to come out of Nicholls.

According to a report from The Clarion-Ledger, there are 55 schools that former Louisiana Tech basketball player Xavian Stapleton can’t transfer to. Those schools include any school in Conference USA or schools in the states of Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi and Arkansas. Stapleton averaged seven points a game as a freshman last season, but decided to leave the Bulldogs when Mike White took the job at Florida.

The Saints Junior Galette is scheduled to meet with the NFL later this month and that meeting is expected to be a little more interesting now that a video has surfaced showing a man swinging a belt at a crowd during a fight on a beach in Florida in 2013. It looks the man strikes a woman with the belt. That man is believed to be Galette. Galette was set to meet with the NFL, because of a domestic violence incident in which the criminal charges were dropped.

Sad news today, involving Baton Rouge native and former Nicholls State standout Darryl Hamilton. The Louisiana Sports Hall of Famer was found dead in suburban Houston in an apparent murder-suicide. Authorities believe a 44-year-old woman shot Hamilton numerous times, before turning the gun on herself. Hamilton played 13 seasons in the major leagues. He was 50-years-old.

The Pelicans introduce Alvin Gentry as their new head coach this afternoon. While it was announced a couple of weeks ago that Gentry would replace Monty Williams, the team had to wait for Gentry to finish his duties with Golden State, who defeated Cleveland last week in the NBA Finals.

The Toledo Bend Reservoir is named the number one bass fishery in the country for 2015 by Bassmaster. Director of the Sabine Parish Tourist Commission Linda Curtis-Sparks says Toledo Bend is worthy of this honor considering the experience that many fishermen have when it comes to reeling in the big catch on daily basis…

LSU Athletic Director Joe Alleva announced over the weekend that Georgia Southern play-by-play man Chris Blair will be the next “Voice of the LSU Tigers.” Blair will replace Jim Hawthorne who will retire after the 2015-16 men’s basketball season. Blair will join the Athletic Department in December and will begin calling games at the start of the 2016 baseball season.

LSU third baseman Conner Hale has signed a contract to play pro ball for the Seattle Mariners. The Mariners drafted Hale in the ninth round of this month’s MLB Draft. Hale made his announcement on Twitter with a photo of him signing his paperwork wearing a Mariners cap. Hale is one of seven Tigers starting position players expected to head to the pros this season.

In Major League Baseball, Houston stomped the Mariners 6-2 and the Atlanta Braves completed a three game sweep of the New York Mets with a 1-0 victory Sunday.

The NBA Draft is right around the corner and a couple of former LSU forwards are working to strengthen their position. Jarell Martin and Jordan Mickey have been flying around the country participating in the NBA Draft Combine and working out for several teams. In fact, Martin has worked out for 13 of the NBA’s 30 teams. Projections say Martin and Mickey could be selected in the early part of the second round, if not late in the first. The NBA Draft is Thursday.

The son of LSU head coach Les Miles has decided to accept an offer to be a preferred walk-on at the University of North Carolina. University High quarterback Manny Miles made his announcement Friday. Miles is expected to enroll for the second summer session at North Carolina next month.

LSU quarterback Anthony Jennings and two other players have been charged with unauthorized entry into an inhabited dwelling as a result of an incident that occurred at an on-campus apartment. Police records indicate that the players went to the residence to retrieve items that were taken from Jennings. Legal analyst Chick Foret says that’s not a valid defense and District Attorney Hillar Moore will decide what actions to take…

Jennings, cornerback Dwayne Thomas and defensive lineman Maquedius Bain have all been suspended from the team indefinitely.

A Baton Rouge radio station is reporting that Purdue transfer quarterback Danny Etling is visiting LSU this weekend. Etling started seven games for the Boilermakers as a freshman, but five games into his sophomore season, he was replaced by another quarterback.

And former LSU quarterback Stephen Rivers has signed to play with Northwestern State.

The LSU baseball team won 54 games, but they needed to win a few more games to win a national championship. The Tigers are back in Baton Rouge after they were eliminated by TCU in the College World Series. Coach Paul Mainieri says losing at the C-W-S before reaching the championship series is a cruel way to end a great season…

The LSU Baseball team heads back to Baton Rouge today after losing to TCU eight to four in an elimination game at the College World Series. LSU had just seven hits as TCU relief pitcher Trey Teakell shut the Tigers down for most of the game and LSU’s bullpen struggled. Austin Bain and Jesse Stallings each gave up multiple runs and starter Zac Person also allowed three runs. Coach Paul Mainieri says they got beat by a better team….

LSU’s season finishes with a record fo 54-and-12.

It was a bad night all the way around for the LSU football program. Four players were arrested in two separate incidents, including quarterback Anthony Jennings. Police records indicate Jennings and two of his teammates busted into an on-campus apartment to retrieive some items that had been taken from Jennings. The four players arrested have been suspended.

A New Orleans district court judge denies a petition from Tom Benson’s estranged heirs that claimed the 87-year-old is mentally unfit to run his sports teams. Legal analyst Tim Meche says while Benson prevailed in the competency case, he’ll have a tougher time getting a judge to remove Renee Benson and her two children as the future owners of the teams, when it’s already been established in trusts…

Benson previously announced he was going to leave ownership of the teams to his wife instead of his daughter and grandchildren.

Pelicans guard Eric Gordon has excercised his one-year player option, which means he’ll be back with the team next season. Gordon played in 61 games last season, averaging 13 points and shooting a career-high 45-percent from three-point territory.

ULM’s football season opener against Georgia will kick-off at 11 AM. The SEC has also announced the Ragin Cajuns season opener on September fifth at Kentucky will kick off at 6 PM.

The LSU baseball team’s season ended last night with an 8-to-4 loss to TCU in the College World Series. The Tigers got off to a good start, by scoring a run in the 1st inning, but the Horned Frogs scored three runs in the 2nd inning and three more in the 5th and it was just too much to overcome. Coach Paul Mainieri says it’s tough to see a talented team not reach its ultimate goal…

Four LSU football players have been suspended after being arrested Thursday. Quarterback Anthony Jennings, cornerback Dwayne Thomas, and defensive lineman Maquedius Bain were booked on unauthorized entry into an inhabited dwelling charge. Authorities say the three claim they were trying to retrieve items previously stolen from Jennings. Defensive tackle Trey Lealaimatafao is charged with simple battery and simple robbery stemming from an incident at a local bar. Team officials say the two incidents are not connected.

A judge in New Orleans rules in favor of Saints and Pelicans owner Tom Benson in his competency case. The ruling comes after eight days of testimony that involved Benson’s estranged heirs, his child and two grandchildren, claiming the 87-year-old was mentally unfit, when he made the decision to transfer the ownership of the teams to his wife Gayle, once he passes away. Legal analyst Tim Meche says based on the ruling, the judge found enough evidence to determine that Benson knew what he was doing when he informed Ryan, Renee and Rita Benson will not get the opportunity to run the teams…

Louisiana Sports Hall of Famer John David Crow passed away at the of age of 79 today. He served as head football coach and athletics director at then-Northeast Louisiana University from 1976-80. The former Springhill star won the Heisman Trophy in 1957. He was 79.
