LSU Sports Information Director Michael Bonnette says the Tigers are in a wait-and-see mode when it comes to where Saturday’s game against South Carolina will be played. Massive flooding in the Columbia, South Carolina, area may result in the relocation of the game and Tiger Stadium is one option under consideration. Bonnette says the logistical issues are greater, if the game is played at a neutral site…

The Saints have reportedly signed punter Brandon Fields to the squad. Fields was the Dolphins punter for eight seasons and made the Pro Bowl in 2013. He was cut earlier this year after losing to rookie Matt Darr in a training camp battle. Fields is needed on the Saints roster, because Thomas Morestead has an injured groin.

This morning, the ULM football team will attend the memorial service for quarterback Daniel Fitzwater who died on Saturday at the age of 20. Warhawks Football Coach Todd Berry says Fitzwater was a great young man and teammate. He says it was very emotional to tell the players about his unexpected death prior to their homecoming game…

The memorial services will be held at Calvary Baptist Church in Shreveport. Berry says an autopsy later this week will determine the cause of Fitzwater’s death.

Dallas Keuchel threw six scoreless innings last night as the Houston Astros won the American League Wild Card game after shutting out the New York Yankees 3-0. Keuchel held the Bronx Bombers to just three hits and struck out seven. This was the Astros’ first post-season victory since the 2005 National League Championship Series. Houston will face Kansas City in the best-of-five American League Division Series beginning Thursday.

There’s talk of moving this Saturday’s L-S-U-South Carolina game because of the deadly flooding that’s occurred in the Palmetto State. If the game can’t be played in Columbia, South Carolina athletic director Ray Tanner says a neutral site location is a possibility and so is playing the game in Tiger Stadium.

Improving the passing game is a priority. The Tigers rank 124th in the nation in passing.

And to make room for Fields on the roster, it’s been reported that the Saints have released veteran safety Kenny Phillips. He started three games for New Orleans. This could be a sign that Jairus Byrd is ready to see more snaps, after returning last week from a knee injury.

A memorial service for ULM quarterback Daniel Fitzwater is set for 11am tomorrow morning at Calvary Baptist in Shreveport. The 20-year-old suddenly passed away Saturday and according to the family the cause of death had not yet been determined. ULM learned of Fitzwater’s death just hours before the homecoming game against George Southern.

Miles says he’s not afraid to shuffle the line-up in order to get more production out of his receivers.

LSU is scheduled to play South Carolina this Saturday, but can they play in Columbia, because of the historic flooding that’s taking place in the Palmetto state. South Carolina athletics director Ray Tanner says there have been discussions about moving the game to another city, possibly Baton Rouge. An official decision is expected in 24-36 hours.

The Saints are off today but the coaches are apparently trying out kickers and punters. Fox Sports reporter Alex Marvez says the Saints are planning kicker tryouts after Zach Hocker missed a 30-yard field goal against Dallas. Marvez says the Saints also has four punters in town, because Thomas Morstead is dealing with a groin injury.

The most anticipated LSU basketball season in a long time is underway. Coach Johnny Jones’ team is practicing, but prized recruit Ben Simmons missed the first practice with an ankle injury that is not considered serious. LSU will have 30 preseason workouts leading up to the regular season opener against McNeese State on November 13th.

Nicholls State has broken ground on a five-million dollar renovation on Ray E. Didier Field. Nicholls President Bruce Murphy says the renovation will turn the school’s baseball stadium into one of the best in the Southland Conference. The first phase of the renovation includes a modernized press box that will feature a new sound system and the lighting for the field will be enhanced.

LSU’s passing game took a step backwards in its progression during the Tigers 44-22 win over Eastern Michigan. The Tigers only completed four passes for 80 yards. Coach Les Miles says there were more plays to be had, if they didn’t have several dropped passes…

The Tigers are ranked 124th in the nation in passing, one of just five teams in the country averaging less than 100 passing yards a game.

In a statement, the SEC says LSU’s game Saturday at South Carolina will be played as scheduled. The state of South Carolina is currently dealing with severe flooding issues. Kickoff is scheduled for 11AM at Williams-Brice Stadium. The conference says they will continue to monitor the situation.

LSU running back Leonard Fournette became the first SEC running back to rush for over 200 yards in three consecutive games Saturday night against Eastern Michigan, but he was NOT named SEC Offensive Player of the Week. That honor went to Alabama’s Derrick Henry, who rushed for a career-high 148 yards and a touchdown in the Crimson Tide’s 38-10 win over Georgia.

In the latest F-C-S Coaches poll….undefeated McNeese State is ranked 13th, and Southeastern Louisiana is ranked 17th. These two teams will play each other in a huge Southland Conference matchup Saturday night in Lake Charles.

Fox Sports reports that the Saints will bring in both kickers and punters for tryouts today. Punter Thomas Morstead strained his quad Sunday night during a kickoff against the Cowboys, forcing the Black & Gold to use kicker Zach Hocker as an emergency punter.

In Major League Baseball, the Houston Astros travel to the Big Apple to face the New York Yankees in the American League Wild Card game tonight. The winner will move on to face the Kansas City Royals in an American League Division Series beginning Thursday.

The Saints have their first win of the year and the talk of quarterback Drew Brees being washed up should diminish this week. Brees threw for 359 yards and two touchdowns in New Orleans 26-20 overtime win over Dallas. Brees’ TD pass to CJ Spiller in overtime was the 400th of his career.

LSU will head to South Carolina this weekend to take on the Gamecocks. The Tigers rank 124th nationally in pass offense as they are averaging 95-yards per game through the air. In the win over Eastern Michigan, there were several dropped passes and some over throws by quarterback Brandon Harris. Coach Les Miles says they’ll continue to work on the passing game…

The Pelicans have announced that center Alexis Ajinca will miss the next four to six weeks with a right hamstring strain. Ajinca hurt his hammy in the preseason opener against Indiana on Saturday. The seven-foot-two center averaged a career-high 6.5 points last season. The Pels next presesaon game is Friday against Atlanta in Jacksonville.

According to the Daily Advertiser, UL Lafayette quarterback Jalen Nixon’s injured shoulder should not keep him from missing this Saturday’s game against Texas State. Nixon made his first career start against Louisiana Tech this past Saturday and threw for 161 yards, one touchdown and one interception before getting injured.

Saints Coach Sean Payton expects Quarterback Drew Brees will start on Sunday night against the Dallas Cowboys. Payton says each day Brees has made progress after missing last weekend’s game because of a bruised rotator cuff. Not only is Brees expected to start, but safety Jairus Byrd, linebacker Dannell Ellerbe, cornerback Keenan Lewis and defensive end Cam Jordan are all listed as probable. Guard Jahri Evans is out.

LSU has won 50 straight non-conference regular season games and they are expected to make it 51 in a row when they host Eastern Michigan on Saturday. The Tigers are big favorites to beat the Eagles, who are one of the worst teams in college football when it comes to stopping the run. Leonard Fournette is seeking his third straight 200-yard rushing performance.

UL Lafayette is at Louisiana Tech. The Bulldogs have won six straight at home, while Cajuns running back Elijah McGuire needs 42 rushing yards to move past 25-hundred for his career. Kick-off at Joe Aillet stadium is at six PM.

In the Southland Conference….Nicholls State will host McNeese State. The Colonels are winless on the season, while the Cowboys are undefeated. Northwestern State looks for its first win of the season as the Demons are at Incarnate Word. Southeastern Louisiana won on Thursday as the Lions edged Lamar 30-27. S-L-U’s Kody Sutton scored the winning touchdown with 1:19 left to go.

ULM has its first Sun Belt game of the season Saturday night as the Warhawks host Georgia Southern for homecoming. The Warhawks are without their leading receiver Rashon Ceaser because of a leg injury.

Tulane has a Saturday morning kickoff in Yulman Stadium. The Green Wave will host winless Central Florida. A win for Tulane and they’ll even its record at 2-and-2 with some tough conference games coming up.

Grambling State is at Jackson State on Saturday night at 6 PM. The Tigers are 2-and-0 in the SWAC.

And the Pelicans begin their preseason schedule on Saturday night against the Pacers in Indiana.

Congressman Ralph Abraham of Alto and Congressman Charles Boustany of Lafayette are placing a friendly wager on the Louisiana Tech/UL-Lafayette game to be played in Ruston on Saturday. Abraham is backing Tech with a box of Ruston peaches, and Boustany is putting up an assortment of Tabasco products on the Cajuns. Also tomorrow McNeese State is at Nicholls and ULM hosts Georgia Southern.

Southeastern Louisiana got a late score last night to pull ahead of Lamar 30-27.

In high school scores Thursday night, Livonia beat Amite 38-26, Marksville shutout Peabody 34-0, it was Jennings over Lark Arthur 68-56 and Natchitoches Central put away Franklin Parish 27-6.

Family and friends are reporting that Southern University Football player Devon Gales is in good spirits and expects to make a full recovery from a neck injury he sustained during the Jaguars game against Georgia last weekend. Doctors said Thursday that Gales will likely need at least a year of physical therapy.
