LSU defensive end Princewill Umanmielen was served papers in the parking lot of the LSU football facility yesterday. They’re related to the lawsuit filed by Ole Miss that claims he owes the school 550-thousand dollars for breaking his revenue-sharing contract to transfer to LSU.

Shreveport commercial frying equipment producer Frymaster is expanding its operations. The business began in Shreveport in 1935 and now serves major foodservice operators around the world. Vice President of Business Development and Product Management, Wendell Hays, says they are investing 11 million dollars.

A manhunt is underway in northwest Louisiana for a Caddo Correctional Center inmate who escaped Monday night. Authorities say 24-year-old Tre’Veon Jackson escaped custody after being transported to Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport. Caddo Parish Sheriff Henry Whitehorn says Jackson evaded capture, carjacked a vehicle and crashed that vehicle near Highway 80 and Interstate 220.

The lawsuit seeking nearly one-million-dollars from the athletes for breaking their Ole Miss revenue-sharing contracts was filed in July, and legal analyst Franz Borghardt says the timing is not a coincidence

Umanmielen and Harper transferred to LSU after signing revenue-sharing deals to stay at Ole Miss this season, and the lawsuit says those agreements include penalties for breaking the contracts within a 90-day window. Borghardt says it will come down to what money has already exchanged hands.

Ole Miss officials previously stated the lawsuit intended to force LSU to pay the buyouts for the players like how professional teams often do, but LSU responded that it is not party to the broken contracts. Borghardt says it will take time before anything is resolved, but the lawsuit will not affect Umanmielen and Harper’s eligibility

The 86-hundred students LSUA welcomed this fall represent the largest enrollment in university history and a nearly 12-percent increase from last year. LSUA Chancellor Dr. Elizabeth Beard says that the university offers a personal and impactful education.

Online enrollment grew over 10-percent while dual enrollment saw a 45 percent jump. Four-year institutions nationwide have seen just a 1.4-percent enrollment increase over the last year, but Dr. Beard says LSUA’s outreach has helped reverse that trend in Alexandria.

LSUA serves thousands of adult learners, rural residents, and military-connected students who traditionally do not have easy access to higher education. Dr. Beard says keeping meaningful degrees affordable is vital to the university’s mission.

Jackson has charges including murder, armed robbery, and battery dating back to 2021. Whitehorn says he is considered armed and dangerous and encourages citizens not to try to engage him.

Jackson was last seen in a white shirt, green shorts and white shoes. Whitehorn says if you see him and are able to report the sighting to 911, try to provide the location, what direction he is heading and a description of any clothes he is wearing or the vehicle he is in.

And the suspect who allegedly stabbed four people to death in Houma last weekend has been released from the hospital and he was booked into jail. Kaegan Solet faces four counts of first-degree murder, and one count attempted first degree murder.

ULM welcomes Southeastern Louisiana for its home opener on Saturday. The Warhawks fell to 0-and-2 after losing to UAB 26-20 last weekend. Coach Bryant Vincent says that his team needs to be ready for the Lions this week.

LSU announced today that it will build a statue to honor the career of former women’s basketball star Sylvia Fowles. The two-time All-American center led the Tigers to four consecutive Final Four appearances in the 200s. In 2008, she was the National Defensive Player of the Year and the SEC player of the year.

The city of Oxford is preparing to welcome hundreds of thousands of college football fans for Saturday’s the top-10 matchup between LSU and Ole Miss. Executive director of Visit Oxford, Kinney Ferris says the city could surpass it’s standing record for most visitors ever.

To help with crowd control, the Oxford Police Department is bringing in 19 horse-mounted police units from cities like Mobile, Alabama. Louisiana State Police is also tripling the number of Troopers they send to an away game for LSU football.

Umanmielen is one of two LSU players facing a civil suit from Ole Miss, who alleges the two athletes owe them nearly one-million dollars for not fulfilling the revenue sharing contracts they signed with Ole Miss in January.

 

Researchers at Tulane University’s School of Public Health say that sleeping in near total darkness can lead to better heart health. Lead author of the study, Lu Qi (chee) says their research has found that exposure to higher levels of light at nighttime can actually lead to chronic stress to the heart…

A study led by Tulane University Professor Dr. Lu Qi found that sleeping in near-total darkness could be good for your cardiovascular health. The study collected data from more than 11-thousand participants, and Dr. Qi says sleeping in total darkness is shown to have additional benefits.

A little taste of fall is on its way to Louisiana. A back door front full of dry air from the northeast is headed to the state today, and LSU Health Climatologist Barry Keim says you should feel a drop in humidity tomorrow. Keim says the cooler air will stick around until Saturday morning…

Keim says the front will drop the dew point temperature into the 60s, down around 10 degrees from what it has been, and you should feel a significant difference.

Visit Oxford Executive Director Kinney Ferris says the top-10 Ole Miss LSU game this weekend could bring more travelers to the city than ever before. But if you’re still planning your trip, she says there is still some hotel availability left, and there could still be hope even if hotels are shown as fully booked.

The Tigers’ defense is number-one in the nation in yards allowed per game, but the Rebels’ backfield of Trinidad Chambliss and Kewan Lacy will be its biggest test this season.
