It’s Veteran’s Day a day to give a special thank you to the many men and women who have served in the military. While speaking at a Veteran’s Day event in Iberville Parish, Governor John Bel Edwards, who is  a U-S Army veteran, said the thank yous should not be designated for today only…

There are 283-thousand veterans in Louisiana, 33-thousand of them are women. Edwards says it’s vital the country treat its veterans well, because many of them volunteered to enter one of our military branches

Edwards says this last year, the state’s Military Family Assistance Fund allocated 180-thousand dollars to military families who needed financial relieve because of an unanticipated emergency.

During an economic development trip in August to Europe, Governor Edwards stopped in France to visit the D-Day Battlefields in Normandy. He says the trip inspired him and it’s his hope Americans never take for granted our brave military

After a report showing Shreveport’s wastewater contained double the amount of meth in the system than anywhere else in the country many were shocked. But Nick Goeders (rhymes with Chedders) Executive Director of the Louisiana Addiction Research Center says it didn’t surprise him whatsoever.

Goeders says they use specialized equipment to detect meth in wastewater and when the results came in for Shreveport he called for a recount.

In March the President signed the Methamphetamine Response Act which tasks the Office of the National Drug Control Policy to identify how bad the problem is and find solutions. Goeders is optimistic the act will make a difference for addicts.

And while the City of Shreveport’s water system purifies wastewater before it’s reused, Goeders says he’s concerned about rural water systems and how meth in wastewater could impact the environment and food system.

He says in Europe studies indicate meth in wastewater is contaminating lakes and has been found in trout.

The resignation of Department of Children & Family Services Secretary Marketa Walters has brought attention on the agency’s challenges in handling thousands of child welfare cases statewide. Baton Rouge state Senator Regina Barrow also chairs The Senate Select Committee on Women and Children. She says Walters stepping down at DCFS won’t instantly fix problems, and that needs to be a focus going forward…:

Two small children have died from fentanyl overdoses in recent months; both in Baton Rouge and in both cases the agency was warned the children might be in peril. The controversy led to Secretary Walters resigning this week. Deputy Secretary Terri Porche Ricks takes over at DCFS immediately. Barrow says she looks forward to talking with the new boss…:

How potentially dangerous is the New Orleans French Quarter, really? We hear about shootings frequently and there was one in just the last few days. A teenager arrested for it. NOPD now say there have been 254 gun arrests made on Bourbon Street alone so far this year. They say the nigh number of busts is due to tougher policing and getting dangerous people off the streets when possible.

Three arrests have been made in a fatal shooting last weekend in Minden. Two men and one woman are charged in the crime. An unnamed male victim died the day after the shooting in a Shreveport hospital. The investigation is ongoing.

A Jefferson Parish mom is arrested for arming her son and driving him in search of a teen who threatened to shoot him earlier. No one was hurt in the resulting rolling gun fight. 36-year-old Terrica Griffin of Kenner, and her 15-year-old son are in custody.

David Blossman, President, and CEO of Abita Brewing in Covington says the cost of goods and materials to make their products is up about 35 percent over the past couple of years and Abita has had to increase prices twice so far this year…:

But Blossman remains optimistic the economy will rebound.

The pair are co-writers of the song Buy Dirt and Jordan sings the hit with Luke Bryan. Luwanna Davis remembers when Jacob played music in college.

Under fire for recent overdose deaths of small kids under her agency’s care, Department of Children & Family Services Secretary Marketa Garner Walters has resigned. Before resigning, Walters complained of too few staff to handle the massive caseload of at-risk kids and families. Governor Edwards is bringing in a third-party organization to do a top-to-bottom review of DCFS.

Inflation is making it more costly to drink and make a cold beer these days and David Blossman, President and CEO of the Abita Brewing Company in Covington says everything is significantly higher in cost than just a year ago, and that’s cutting into company profits…:

He says the pandemic impacted bar sales but he’s optimistic the economy rebound and post-pandemic pub crowds will return.

The state’s endangered whooping crane population continues to grow. State Wildlife and Fisheries has added 10 more cranes to its experimental population. Wildlife technician Eva Szyszkowski (SIS COW SKI) says if you are a birdwatcher and want to see them go where lots of birds go to find an easy meal.

40-year-high rates in inflation are making it more costly to enjoy a cold beer…or to make it for that matter. Department of Children & Family Services Secretary Marketa Garner Walters has resigned; under fire after two Baton Rouge children under DCFS supervision died from drug overdoses in a four-month span. In her resignation letter, Walters said the uptick in reports of abuse and neglect has created what she calls an impossible task for child welfare workers.

Good news in the state’s effort to re-grow the state’s whooping crane population as ten more whooping cranes have been added to the wildlife along coastal Louisiana. That brings the population to 87 after re-starting the flock in 2011. LDWF’s Eva Szyszkoski says whooping cranes face a number of threats, including other predators…
