Lucille Fremin Babineaux, the mother of former Governor Kathleen Blanco has died at the age of 102. Babineaux was born in 1919 in New Iberia and had seven children of her own as she ran the Home Rug Cleaning and Floor Company in Coteau. She was the matriarch of a family of 105 and was with her daughter Kathleen Blanco every day when she got sick and died in 2019.

State Treasurer John Schroder launches a second round of the Louisiana Loggers Relief Grant Program. It’s designed to alleviate the economic strain caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Logging companies that previously received the maximum $25,000 amount from the original Loggers Relief program are not eligible. But Schroder says those who were previously denied may be eligible for this round of funding.

Brumley says Lafourche was tenth overall for performance in LEAP testing, but its four-point increase tied for the largest improvement in Louisiana.  He says a key to the schools’ success is the emphasis on science education, targeted to developing job skills for the local market, plus college preparation.

Brumley says the Lafourche schools’ success provides proof to other school systems in Louisiana, especially those vulnerable to severe weather damage.

Brumley says it was critically important that the schools were supported by a wide range of community leaders who set examples for students by being resilient themselves.

The second round of funding from the Louisiana Loggers Relief Program will be open for applications today. Treasurer John Schroder, who’s overseeing the implementation of $5-million, says it’s intended to alleviate the economic strain for loggers caused by the pandemic.

He says it’s funded by the federal infrastructure act. Logging companies that previously received the maximum $25,000 amount from the original Loggers Relief program are not eligible. Schroder says those who were previously denied may be eligible for this round of funding.

Lattimore got into a physical altercation after he was shoved by Leonard Fournette and then Evans shoved Lattimore to the ground Coach Dennis Allen told Lattimore he should not retaliate

AARP Louisiana Director of Advocacy Andrew Muhl, says during a four-week stretch over July and August, 46 Louisiana nursing home patients died from COVID after only recording five deaths during the previous four weeks.

Since 2003, 174 roundabouts have been constructed in Louisiana and while many are resistant to change DOTD Spokesperson Rodney Mallett says according to a survey they conducted after the Sorrento roundabout, 85% say there are fewer wrecks, 88% say traffic flows better and 90% say they’d like to see another one

In a four week period between mid-July to mid-August, 46 elderly residents died from COVID-related symptoms. Andrew Muhl is director of advocacy for AARP Louisiana. St. Landry narcotics deputies took down a heroin stash house, after a month-long investigation. Two men are in custody; charged with possession with intent to distribute heroin and manufacturing of heroin. A raid yielded 19 bags of heroin – street value over $100k – some guns and illicitly-earned cash.

DOTD says roundabouts are the traffic wave of the future, and the best way to keep traffic moving in high volume areas. Spokesman Rodney Mallett says they take some getting used to, but you’re less likely to get t-boned or rear-ended in one…:

Sheriff’s deputies in Lafayette Parish arrest a man and woman for the death of their toddler. Spokesperson Valerie Ponseti says 29-year-old Dillon Cormier and 23-year-old Deziree Setoon were taken into custody after officers found a 1-year-old child in their home unresponsive. The toddler later died. The charges are murder and cruelty to a juvenile. No other details are yet available.

Rapper Mystikal was arraigned today on charges of domestic abuse by strangulation and 1^st-degree rape in Ascension Parish. As expected, the artist – real name Michael Tyler – pleaded not guilty.

The NFL has suspended Buccaneers receiver Mike Evans for one game for shoving Saints corner Marshon Lattimore down to the ground during yesterday’s 20-10 victory for Tampa Bay. This is not the first incident between Evans and Lattimore. In 2017, Evans was suspended for one game for coming onto the field and shoving Lattimore in the back. The statewide average price for a gallon of regular gasoline continues to fall. According to Triple-A, It’s down to $3.13, which is 35-cents cheaper than a month ago. Triple-A says gas prices have been falling for nearly 100 days and Louisiana’s statewide average is the second lowest in the country, trailing only Mississippi.
