A Jefferson Parish man who was cleared of a rape conviction after serving nearly 38 years in prison is now fighting for compensation. 62-year-old Malcolm Alexander was exonerated by DNA evidence and freed in 2018. Capital area Congressman Garret Graves says a new study from the independent non-profit group “First Street” crunched the numbers. He says he’s seen some constituents’ flood coverage go from less than $600-a-year to over $8000, which is ludicrous. Graves says FEMA should be investing in infrastructure to protect areas vulnerable to flooding, instead of overcharging policyholders…:

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell says she will not reimburse the city for almost $30-thousand in travel upgrades during recent trips to Miami, D.C. and France. She says the additional dollars were for her (quote) “safety, not luxury.” The upgrades paid for Cantrell to fly first class while her staff flew coach. Cantrell‘s extravagances are one of the reasons cited for the recall petition against her. Others are angry she seemingly sided with a teen carjacker over his victims.

A teenage carjacker was shot and killed Thursday night after he fired on Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s deputies trying to arrest him. The incident happened very near the Jefferson/Orleans parish line in Algiers. The suspect is not identified because he is only 16. No officers were hurt in the gunfire.
