It was a tough weekend in Mobile for the Cajuns baseball team as they were swept by South Alabama. The Jaguars completed the sweep by winning a doubleheader yesterday. U-L Lafayette was held to five runs during the three-game series and fall into a first-place tie with Little Rock in the West Division.

ULM won its series versus Little Rock as they defeated the Trojans five to four in ten innings yesterday. Ryan Humeniuk started a walk-off celebration with an RBI double.

Tonight the Warhawks are in Baton Rouge to face the struggling LSU Tigers. Freshman Will Hellmers will start for the Tigers. He’s 5-and-1 with a 3.46 ERA. Coach Paul Mainieri was asked about using Hellmers as a starter in SEC games…

The Louisiana Tech baseball team holds steady in the D-1 and the USA Today Coaches Poll. D-1 Baseball has the Bulldogs ranked 14th, while the coaches have Tech ranked 15th after splitting an emotional and hard-fought series with Southern Miss. La Tech hosts Marshall for a four-game series starting on Friday. The Thundering Herd are 6-and-22 on the season.

In the final Stats Perform FCS Top 25 poll, Southeastern Louisiana is ranked 20th and Nicholls 23rd. Lions quarterback Cole Kelley has been named a finalist for the Walter Payton Award, which goes to teh top offensive player in the F-C-S. The former Teurlings Catholic star leads the nation in passing yards and had 18 passing touchdowns and seven rushing touchdowns.

The Pelicans host Nets tonight at the Smoothie King Center, looking to snap a three-game losing streak.

The final FCS top 25 football poll has officially been released and a pair of Louisiana teams made the rankings.  Southeastern Louisiana finished ranked 20th in the country as they finished 4-3 and Nicholls came in at number 23 in the final rankings after a 4-3 season.

Ouachita football coach Jeff Fitzgerald has stepped down to become the area director for Fellowship of Christian Athletes in northeastern Louisiana.  His record was 45-40 in eight seasons with a 3-8 playoff mark.

Legendary former Parkview Baptist football coach Kenny Guillot has died at the age of 76.  In 15 seasons at Parkview, he had a 164-31 record and four state titles.

The LSU baseball team dropped another SEC series over the weekend.  The Tigers won game one on Thursday night before losing both games of the doubleheader on Saturday.  A-J Labas took a two to nothing lead into the seventh in Saturday’s game one of the doubleheader. The game was scheduled to go seven innings and Labas says he lost his edge in that inning which resulted in the Gamecocks scoring four runs…

LSU pitcher Landon Marceaux has been named National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball after recording a career-high 12 strikeouts.

13th ranked Louisiana Tech earned a thrilling win over Southern Miss last night as first baseman Manny Garcia hit a walk-off, two-run homer to give the Bulldogs a seven to six win over the Golden Eagles. Each team won two games in the weekend series.

The LSU baseball team dropped another SEC series over the weekend. They were on the verge of winning the series versus 11th ranked South Carolina as they had a two-run lead and needed three outs to win the second game of the series, but the Gamecocks rallied with four runs to win 4-2 and took the final game of the series nine to nothing. Coach Paul Mainieri says losing the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader was tough.

The Ragin Cajuns baseball team lost 4-1 to South Alabama yesterday.  Also, ULM defeated Little Rock 5-3 yesterday and now sit at 4-10 in Sun Belt Conference play.

LSU’s spring game was Saturday as the team’s four quarterbacks battled it out on the field.  Statistically, sophomore Max Johnson had the best day of the four QBs. He threw for 180 yards and two touchdowns. During the spring, the four signal callers shared snaps with the first team. Orgeron says they’ll use a different approach in August when they return for preseason camp…

Southern blew out Grambling 49-7 in this year’s Bayou Classic.  Quarterback Ladarius Skelton threw for 102 yardsand added 76 yards rushing and two touchdowns on the ground.  Despite the Jaguars’ 4-1 record, the team failed to make the FCS playoffs.

What a finish last night to the four game series between 13th ranked Louisiana Tech and Southern Miss as first baseman Manny Garcia launched a walk-off, two-run homer over the left-field wall to give the Bulldogs a seven to six win over the Golden Eagles as the two Conference USA opponents ended up splitting the four-game series. The four games were decided by a total of five runs.

The Ragin Cajuns scored one run in a four-to-one loss to South Alabama yesterday. The two teams will play a doubleheader in Mobile today. ULM defeated Little Rock five to three to improve to four and ten in the Sun Belt.

LSU is four and eleven in the SEC after losing a series to 11th ranked South Carolina. Coach Paul Mainieri says losing the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader was tough…

LSU’s four quarterbacks combined to throw for 512 yards and four touchdowns in Saturday’s spring game. Coach Ed Orgeron liked what he saw….

Orgeron also says the defense played solid football on Saturday as the first and second-team defenses produced five interceptions, 13 pass breakups, and five sacks.

The LSU spring football game is today at noon.  Tigers fans will be able to see the team in action in person for the first time in a while.  While the spring game doesn’t count in terms of a win or loss, Coach Ed Orgeron says he wants his team to be competitive.

Friday night baseball games for both LSU and Louisiana Tech were postponed due to weather.  LSU will play a doubleheader today against South Carolina with game 1 starting at 11 a.m.  AJ Labas will get the start for the Tigers in the first game of today.  Tech will play two nine-inning games today and two seven-inning games on Sunday.

The New Orleans Pelicans lost a close one last night to the Washington Wizards 117-115 in overtime.  Despite the loss, forward Brandon Ingram had a big night for the Pels, pouring in a team-high 34 points to go along with 7 rebounds and 5 assists.  Zion Williamson added 21 points for the Pels.  New Orleans was on a three-game winning streak but have now lost two-straight games.  With the loss, New Orleans drops to 25-31 on the season.

The Bayou Classic between Southern and Grambling State is today in Shreveport.  The game is usually held in New Orleans but was moved due to the Covid-19 restrictions in the crescent city.  The Jaguars come into the matchup with a 3-1 record while Grambling is 0-3.  Kickoff for today’s game is scheduled for 1:30.

The 4-2 Southeastern Louisiana football team will take on 4-3 Southern Illinois at noon.  The Lions are playing well as they’ve won their last two games.  The Lions are hoping to grab a win and potentially earn a spot in the playoffs.

The ULM baseball team will host Little Rock in a three-game series starting today and concluding on Monday.  The Warhawks are 11-19 overall with a 3-9 record in conference play.  First pitch for game 1 is scheduled for 2 p.m.

LSU women’s basketball coach Nikki Fargas has stepped down as head coach after ten seasons with the program and plans to pursue a career outside of coaching.  Fargas leaves LSU with a 177-129 record since taking over the team.

The LSU baseball team can clinch its second straight SEC series victory with a win tonight over the Gamecocks. The Tigers took the opening game of the series last night as Landon Marceaux struck out a career-high 12 hitters in a five to one win.

Louisiana Tech begins a huge Conference USA series tonight at home against Southern Miss. The Bulldogs are looking to stay in first place in the West Division.

Southern and Grambling will meet in tomorrow’s Bayou Classic. It’s only the second time the two schools have played football against each other in Shreveport. 1973 was the other time.

In tomorrow’s LSU spring game, Max Johnson will get the first snap at quarterback with the first team. But Coach Ed Orgeron says a depth chart at Q-B has not been established…

Myles Brennan, TJ Finley and Garrett Nussmeier are all expected to get snaps with the first team.

Coach Will Wade announced today that Xavier Pinson is officially an LSU Tiger as he’s transferring in after spending the last three years at Missouri. Last season he averaged nearly 14 points and three assists a game. Wade and his staff are scouring the transfer portal looking for players after losing four guys early to the NBA draft….

Starting Pelicans guard Lonzo Ball says he plans to play tonight after missing the last four games when New Orleans visits the Washington Wizards. Ball ahs been sidelined with a strained left hip flexor. New Orleans is 25 and 30, two games back of San Antonio for 10th place in the Western Conference and the final spot for the play-in tournament.

The LSU spring football game is this Saturday at noon and due to it being broadcasted on SEC Network plus, coach Ed Orgeron says fans shouldn’t expect a lot of creativity with the play calling.

LSU pitcher Landon Marceaux struck out a career-high 12 hitters as the Tigers took game one of their series with South Carolina by beating the Gamecocks five to one last night. As of now, game two is scheduled for 7 p.m. tonight.

The New Orleans Pelicans will look to rebound from their recent loss to the Knicks as they will be on the road to take on the Washington Wizards tonight at 6 p.m. The Pelicans are 25-30 on the season while the Wizards sit at 21-33.

The Ragin Cajuns series at South Alabama has been moved back a day because of the weather. It will now start tomorrow and end on Monday.

 

The Bayou Classic is set for this Saturday in Shreveport at Independence Stadium. Matt Doyle spoke with the Shreveport-Bossier Convention and Tourist Bureau President about what this means for the region…

Johnson’s younger brother gave his verbal pledge to the Tigers. Jake Johnson, who is rated as the nation’s number one tight end in the class oo 2022, announced his commitment yesterday afternoon. He’s six-foot-five, 210 pounds and gives LSU 12 commitments in the Class of 2022.

Tomorrow is the Bayou Classic between Southern and Grambling at Independence Stadium in Shreveport. Grambling hasn’t played in a month because of COVID cases within the football program. The Tigers are expected to be short-handed, as several players will play because of COVID protocol.

U-S-C also has the third-best team ERA in the SEC and LSU has the second-worst batting average in SEC games at .237, but the bats showed signed of life in the series win over the Wildcats. Catcher Hayden Travinski from Shreveport on the players’ mindset at the plate.

The Pelicans three-game winning streak came to an end last night as they fell to the New York Knicks 116-106. Former Pelican Julius Randle led the way for the Knicks, scoring 32 points on the night. Brandon Ingram poured in 28 points in the loss and Zion Williamson added 25.

Grambling State and Southern will do battle in the Bayou Classic on Saturday.  While no band and only limited fans are allowed to attend the game, Grambling head coach Broderick Fobbs says this will still be a big-time game.

The NCAA Division One Council has voted to end the requirement that student-athletes sit out a year when transferring to another school. This rule that takes effect next season will allow undergraduate athletes to transfer one-time without having to sit out a full season.

In basketball news, LSU guard Aundre Hyatt has officially entered the transfer portal. Hyatt started 15 games for the Tigers and was a key contributor in LSU’s win over St. Bonaventure in the NCAA tournament.

The LSU baseball team looks to build on last weekend’s series victory over Kentucky when they host 10th ranked South Carolina for a three-game series starting tonight. The Gamecocks are 22 and 9 overall and 8-and-4 in the SEC. U-S-C also has the third-best team ERA in the league. Coach Paul Mainieri says the Gamecocks pitching staff is loaded with power arms.

The Pelicans scored just 17 points in the fourth quarter and lost to the Knicks 116 to 106 last night to end their three-game losing streak. Zion Williamson 25 points in a losing effort.

Free agency is coming to college athletics as the NCAA Division One Council has voted to end the requirement that student-athletes sit out a year when transferring to another school.
