The St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office says a 17-year-old girl is dead after a tree fell on her car near Plaisance. They say Gabrielle Lajack was sitting in a parked car in her driveway when the incident occurred. Lajack was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Landry Parish Coroner.

Southeastern Louisiana University has joined forces with LSU’s Pennington Biomedical Research Center in creating a new program to help college students prepare for careers working with children who are overweight. Pennington Assistant Professor, Dr. Amanda Staiano, says the primary purpose of Project I-PAL is to try to prepare college students for their future jobs…

The Sterlington Police Department has arrested a man after allegedly setting his pregnant girlfriend on fire during an argument over bills. Chief Barry Bonner says the victim was transported to the burn center in Jackson, Mississippi with second and third degree burns all over her body. He says cops were told by family members that the victim was 9 weeks pregnant…

A three bill compromise over common Core has won final passage in the House, and are their way to the governor’s desk. By a 99-0 vote, the motion will have on-going public and legislative reviews of the education standards. One of the approved bills will place limits on Louisiana usuage of the material.

Getting final legislative approval today is a bill that would give domestic violence abuse victims special housing protections such as breaking a lease to escape an abuser. Supporters say woman who are abused need more safe guarding when it comes to escaping a violent situation.

The state House rejects the Senate’s changes to the cigarette tax bill on a 81-15 vote sending the legislation to conference committee where both sides can hash it out. The Senate wanted the cigarette tax to be up with the Southern Regional Average of $1.08 but the House wanted to keep the increase at 32 cents lifting Louisiana’s tax to 68 cents per pack. It was unlikely the House would go along with the higher increase.

The Alexandria Police Department says a man is under arrest on murder charges accused of killing someone at a tattoo shop. Spokesman Lt. Bruce Fairbanks says they responded to the Sacred Art tattoo shop monday afternoon and located the victim who’d been shot and was unresponsive…:

Fairbanks says 43-year-old Daymein Boyd was arrested and charged with second degree murder. He believes the motive for the shooting was a fight between the two men.

According to a report from Fuelfix.com, gas prices won’t go any higher this year and motorists will enjoy the lowest gas prices in years for the summer. The current statewide average stands at $2.53 a gallon.

The man is accused of pouring rubbing alcohol on the victim then lighting her on fire with a cigarette.

As expected, the State House has decided not to agree to the Senate amendment on the cigarette tax bill which would raise it to $1.08 a pack — matching the Southern Regional average. Lawmakers in the lower chamber are more comfortable with raising the tax 32 cents to 68 cents a pack. The bill now heads to a conference committee.
