LSU AgCenter Entomologist Kristin Healy says any time you get more water, you get more mosquitoes. Healy says when a river floods, it floods nearby flood plains and that’s where the problem lies…

Healy says the mosquitoes the area will see from the floods will likely not be the “house mosquito” that transmits the West Nile Virus. She says mosquito control departments in areas along the Red River will have their hands full this summer as they combat the pests.

Another bill heading to the governor’s desk is one that doubles the fine for littering. A first-offense for simple littering will go up from 75 to 150-dollars and subsequent offenses will increase from 500 to one-thousand dollars. The additional revenue will go towards the retirement system of the law enforcement agency that writes the litter ticket.

As of now, the House does not support a tax credit backed by Governor Jindal that allows him to keep his no-tax pledge. A federal appeals court has granted the state Attorney General’s motion to temporarily block the release of Albert Woodfox. The “Angola 3” inmate has spent over 40 years in solitary confinement for the murder of Angola prison guard Brent Miller. His two convictions for that crime were overturned. The appeals court order came one day after a federal judge ordered the unconditional release of Woodfox. Tuesday’s ruling blocks Woodfox’s release until at least Friday.

SLU and LSU’s Pennington Biomedical Research Center have partnered up to launch a program that teaches college students how to work with overweight kids. Michelle Southern reports…
