It’s the first full day since Governor John Bel Edwards partially lifted the statewide mask mandate. Edwards says he altered the mask mandate for a number of reasons, among them the continued downward trend in COVID cases and fatalities. However, he still advises the use of face masks.

As the pandemic continues Edwards advises residents to access their social settings. If you’re unsure of the vaccination status of those around you he recommends that you distance yourself and wear a mask.

Another motivating factor in altering the mask mandate, Edwards says is that vaccine eligibility has been open for all residents 16 and older since March 29th. Edwards says he will continue to wear a mask in public settings even though he’s fully vaccinated.

The statewide mask mandate went into effect on July 13, 2020.

A House committee passed another bill that would allow people in Louisiana 21 and older without felony records to carry a concealed handgun without needing a state permit or training.

Louisiana Shooting Association President Dan Zelenka supports the bill. He says getting a concealed carry permit costs up to 325 dollars and requires attendance at a nine-hour course.

This version of Constitutional Carry by Thibodaux Representative Bryan Fontenot adds one stipulation that those concealed carrying must take a 60 minute free, state-created online training course covering gun safety and concealed carry.

Moms Demand Action member Nanette Olivier spoke out against the bill. She says polling available suggests there’s no popular support for this…

The committee vote was 8-4 in favor.

Governor Edwards says he will reject any legislation that hits his desk removing the permitting requirement for concealed carry. Wednesday the Senate passed a version of constitutional carry with a veto-proof majority.

Houma Senator Mike Fesi decides not to move forward with his bill to require a juvenile to get written consent from both parents to receive gender therapy. Advocates, health professionals, and transgender individuals like this LSU student testified against it.

Senate Health Chairman Fred Mills says he received 400 cards in opposition to the legislation, which would have prevented minors from receiving counseling, hormone treatments or gender-related surgeries if they didn’t have both parents’ consent. State health officials celebrate the progress that’s been made in addressing racial disparities in vaccination rates in Louisiana.

State Health Officer Dr. Joe Kanter says Louisiana is above the national average now when it comes to the percentage of vaccinated people who are Black.

Louisiana still has the third-lowest overall vaccination rate in the nation.

Kanter says our predicted rate of vaccination for Black residents is 17 percent higher than the national average.

A bill that seeks to legalize recreational marijuana use is heading to the House floor after getting out of the House Criminal Justice Committee on a seven to five vote. It would give voters a chance to vote on the issue in November 2022.

A Senate committee approves legislation that would prohibit law enforcement officers from using chokeholds and no-knock warrants at night. Norco Senator Gary Smith says placing strict limits on nighttime no-knock warrants comes after several incidents in other parts of the country ended in tragedy.

LSU baseball remains undefeated in midweek games after blanking Grambling State seven to nothing yesterday. Ma’Khail Hilliard struck out five over three shutout innings for the win. Freshman shortstop Jordan Thompson homered for the seventh time, but the Tigers leading home run hitter Gavin Dugas did not play because of back spasms. The Tigers host number one ranked Arkansas this weekend.

ULM won a baseball game in Lafayette for the first time since 2012 as the Warhawks held on to beat the Cajuns seven to six. Mason Holt’s two-run homer in the ninth inning was the insurance runs ULM needed. The game does not count toward the Sun Belt Standings.

Louisiana Tech baseball coach Lane Burroughs is hopeful Steele Netterville will return to the lineup this weekend when the Bulldogs visit Middle Tennessee for a four-game series starting on Friday. Netterville, who has 30 RBIs on the season, has missed about three weeks with an oblique strain.

Hall of Fame running back Marshall Faulk is interested in becoming the new head football coach at Southern and there’s interest from the Baton Rouge school for Faulk to lead the Jaguars football program. That’s according to NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport. Southern is looking to replace Dawson Odums who last week became the head coach at Norfolk State.

ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg is reporting that Louisiana Tech football coach Skip Holtz is in the running to become the next head football coach at Kansas. Rittenberg says Holtz is one of four coaches that Kansas is giving the most attention to.

24-7 sports ranks LSU’s 2022 recruiting class as the second-best in the country behind Georgia after landing a verbal pledge from a five-star prospect last week. Ponchatoula Safety Jacoby Matthews gives LSU 13 commitments for next year and he’s the third five-star prospect in the class.

The Title Nine scandal at LSU has dominated the news, but there was reason to celebrate on the Baton Rouge campus yesterday as the school introduced one of the winningest coaches in women’s basketball, Kim Mulkey, who takes over the Lady Tigers basketball program. Louisiana saw a 2-percent population increase in the 2020 Census from the previous decade but compared to the national average of 7-percent growth, the slight increase is not as promising as it sounds. Brooke Thorington explains.

2020 Census data shows the Bayou State’s population at 4.6 million, a 2-percent growth from the 2010 tally but well below the national average growth of 7-percent. Demographer Greg Rigamer says there’s a simple answer as to why Louisiana’s growth is below average.

Rigamer says when you look at several business surveys Louisiana consistently ranks low for a number of reasons in attracting and retaining residents.

Our neighboring state to the west, Texas saw the largest population boom in the sheer number of people for the 2020 Census. After the 2010 Census Louisiana lost a congressional seat due to a post Katrina population shift. But as for the 2030 outlook Rigamer says the current trend is not promising.

Louisiana is ranked 25th among state population, the same spot it held after the 2010 Census.

The New Orleans Police Department is looking for a street performer that wears a Star Wars Chewbacca costume. That person allegedly stabbed another person after a verbal altercation with the victim on Saturday night in the French Quarter. New Orleans paramedic Holly Sherman from A&E’s “Nightwatch” told Talk 107-3 in Baton Rouge she received a strange call about the incident.

When Sherman finally arrived on the scene in the 700 block of Toulouse Street, she realized that the call had some truth to it.

A Senate committee unanimously approves a bill requiring the National Anthem be played before all sporting events at publicly funded facilities in Louisiana.

Slidell Senator Sharon Hewitt wrote the bill. She says it’s in honor of veterans…

Hewitt noted there are no penalties included in the bill for facilities that do not comply.

Hewitt says another reason she brought the bill is to try to teach the youth about patriotism.

Nelson says there’s growing support among the public to legalize marijuana. He says it’s an activity that can be taxed, generating as much as 200-million dollars in state revenues. He says some of that money can go towards beefing up law enforcement…

The Louisiana Sheriff Association Executive Director Michael Ranatza says taxing the legal use of marijuana is not worth it, because it will bring on a host of other problems. He pointed to a study out of Colorado that shows marijuana was mostly likely to be present in adolescents who commit suicide…
