A House committee voted against a bill to prohibit transgender athletes from competing in girls’ sports. A similar bill will be debated on the Senate floor this afternoon. Governor Edwards will also provide a COVID-19 update at 3:30.

The state’s proposed 36-billion dollar budget for the next fiscal year contains an 800-dollar pay raise for K-through-12 teachers and a 400-dollar pay raise for school support workers. The governor’s initial spending plan only called for a 400-dollar teacher pay raise. Louisiana Federation of Teachers Legislative Director Cynthia Posey is glad to see lawmakers are proposing more than what the governor recommended…

The Louisiana Senate is set to debate the Fairness in Women’s Sport’s Act this afternoon which says biological females are the only ones that can compete in women’s sports. A similar measure failed to get out of the House Education Committee yesterday on a six to five vote. Arkansas and Mississippi have passed laws to ban transgender individuals from competing in girls’ sports.

After close to three hours of testimony in House Criminal Justice, New Orleans Representative Mandie Landry shelved her bill to decriminalize prostitution. Gloria Blankenship with Purchase Not for Sale, an organization to assist victims of sexual exploitation, says while she agrees with the intent of the bill, she’s unable to support it in its current form.

Other opponents disapproved of the bill on moral grounds.

Governor John Bel Edwards encourages owners of restaurants, bars, and other food-related establishments to register for the Small Business Administration’s new Restaurant Revitalization Fund. Louisiana Restaurant Association President Stan Harris says $28-billion has been set aside to fund the program.

Ragin Cajuns guard Mylik Wilson has entered the NCAA transfer portal. The former Rayville star has started 50 games at U-L Lafayette and last season averaged nearly 13 points and six rebounds a game as a sophomore. Reserve forward Chris Spenkuch is also in the portal.

New LSU Women’s Basketball head coach Kim Mulkey implored lawmakers to pass legislation allowing student-athletes to receive compensation for their name, image, and likeness. Mulkey says this legislation would allow those student-athletes to do things that are transformative in their lives.

Mulkey made the comments when she was given the opportunity to address the Louisiana House. The N-I-L bill has received approval from one Senate committee and is waiting to be heard by the Senate Finance committee.

LSU catcher Hayden Travinksi will miss the rest of the season as he needs surgery on his throwing elbow. Travinski has started 12 games this season and he’s hitting .271 with four home runs and 13 RBIs. The Tigers begin a series tomorrow at home against Auburn.

The United Cajun Navy is explaining why they are no longer aiding in the search for the seven missing crewmen of the SEACOR Power that capsized on April 13th. UCN spokesperson Brian Trascher says they cap search efforts at two weeks and opted to end their participation due to a smear campaign launched by former members.

Trascher says the UCN still plans to assist family members of the missing crew members.  Trascher says it’s a group of former volunteers, that were asked to leave the group for various reasons, who continue to slander the UCN and they’ve had to take the matter to court before.

Trascher says the United Cajun Navy is the only registered nonprofit organization that has emerged from the grassroots efforts of the Cajun Navy that responded to the 2016 flood in Louisiana. Trascher says there are several rumors accusing the organization of misusing funds, but a lack of evidence.

Trascher says even though the group is nonprofit it doesn’t mean they don’t have expenses and they are also donating funds raised from search efforts in the form of grants to families of the missing crewmembers.

The Louisiana Department of Education is partnering with Ochsner Health to give teachers and school support staff workers free access to virtual visits with a licensed mental health professional. State Superintendent of Education Dr. Cade Brumley….

During the appointment, patients will be asked about current symptoms, medical history and goals for therapy. Brumley says those seeking help will have access to a variety of visits.

A House committee votes 8-2 in favor of legislation allowing St. Tammany voters the opportunity to decide whether or not they’d like a waterfront casino in Slidell.

St. Tammany Corporation CEO Chris Masingill says they’ve worked out a five percent revenue share agreement with casino owners Pacific Peninsula, who are moving the license from Bossier City…

Masingill also notes the 250 million dollar project would create 1,900 direct jobs at the facility.

The bill is backed by the St. Tammany Chamber and Northshore Business Council. Business Council CEO Bonnie Eades says local residents deserve a chance to vote on this…

Moving the license would result in the closure of DiamondJacks Casino in Bossier City. DiamondJacks has not been open since the beginning of the pandemic.

Some residents who live near the proposed casino spoke against the bill. Lisa Clayton argues casinos are magnets for sex trafficking.

Others argued there’s evidence that casinos lower property values in nearby neighborhoods.

Louisiana Baptists Office of Public Policy Director Will Hall says Louisiana has the 4th highest incidence of problem gambling, a number that ballooned after gambling was legalized in the early 90s.

Dylan Crews and Drew Bianco hit home runs as the LSU Tigers defeated Southern 10 to 2 last night. But the highlight of the night came from LSU pitcher Matthew Beck who has been hurt most of the year with an arm injury. Beck stepped up to the plate as a pinch hitter in the eighth inning and delivered a single in what is likely his last appearance in an LSU uniform. The Tigers begin an SEC series with Auburn on Thursday.

After sweeping a four-game series from Middle Tennessee, La Tech moved up four spots in the latest USA Today Coaches Poll to 14. The Bulldogs have won a school record 10 straight road games. Tech is at FIU this weekend.

Tulane’s record is up to 24-14 and the Green Wave are ranked 22nd by Perfect Game and 24th by Collegiate Baseball. The Green Wave are at 13th ranked East Carolina this weekend.

ULM’s Trace Henry has been named Sun Belt Baseball Player of the week after going 10 for 16 at the plate with seven runs scored and two RBIs. The Warhawks are at Jackson State tomorrow.

The Pelicans had another bad performance last night as the NBA’s leading scorer Stephen Curry had 41 points in Golden State’s 123 to 108 win over New Orleans at the Smoothie King Center. The Pels remain 2.5 games back of San Antonio for the final spot in the play-in tournament. The Pelicans and Warriors play each other again tonight in the Big Easy.
