Despite rumors that the Saints were looking to trade up into the top ten, New Orleans stayed at number 28 and drafted Houston defensive end Payton Turner late in the first round of last night’s NFL draft. Turner is six-foot-five, 270 pounds, and played four seasons for the Cougars, starting 40 games and recording 115 tackles, 25 tackles for a loss, and ten sacks.

Former LSU stars Ja’Marr Chase and Joe Burrow are teammates again as the Bengals used the fifth overall pick to select Chase who was named the best wide receiver in the country during LSU’s 2019 national championship season.

Former Jennings standout Travis Etienne and Trevor Lawrence will remain teammates. The former Clemson stars were both drafted by Jacksonsville. Former Amite star and Heisman Trophy winner DeVonta Smith went to the Philadelphia Eagles who traded up to get the tenth pick.

In college baseball, the Fighting Tigers host number one ranked Arkansas tonight as the LSU campus returns to 100-percent capacity for sporting events.

After splitting a four-game series at home against Marshall last weekend, Louisiana Tech is on the road this weekend for another four-game set at Middle Tennessee. Tonight is the NFL draft and the rumors are swirling. The Saints have a history of moving up in the first round and they currently hold the 28th pick. ESPN’s Dianna Russini reports the Saints are looking to make a trade that would land them a pick in the top ten. Yahoo Sports says the Saints are high on Virginia Tech cornerback Caleb Farley.

Former LSU wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase is expected to be a top ten pick. He could go to the Bengals with the fifth pick or Dolphins who select sixth. NFL draft analyst Mike Detillier says another former LSU wide out Terrence Marshall might also be drafted tonight…

Former LSU linebacker Jabril Cox is expected to be selected tomorrow and Detillier says many teams are interested in safety Jacoby Stevens.

The Saints have exercised the fifth-year option on defensive end Marcus Davenport, which means he will not be a free agent after this season. Davenport was the team’s first round pick in 2018 out of Texas-San Antonio and in four seasons he’s recorded 12.5 sacks.

After losing a two-point contest last night in Denver, the Pelicans are in Oklahoma City to take on the Thunder.

The LHSAA State Softball Tournament got underway today and for the first time in over a year high school athletes are treated to full stands with no capacity restrictions. Matt Doyle has more.

Louisiana’s Legislative Black Caucus has asked for the removal of Chalmette Representative Ray Garofalo as House Education Chairman over a comment he made about slavery. While discussing his bill to ban “divisive concepts” Garofalo said there were some good components of slavery…

Former LSU wide receiver Ja’marr Chase should hear his name called early in tonight’s NFL  draft as he’s projected to be a top-10 pick.  Chase’s high school head coach and Rummel athletic director Jay Roth says he knew Chase had a chance to be great.

Archbishop Rummel has a very rich football tradition as they continue to be one of the top teams in the state.  Despite all of the talent to go through the school, Roth thinks Chase might be the best receiver he’s coached.

Chase was one of the big-time college players to opt-out of the 2020 season due to the uncertainty surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic.  While Chase hasn’t played football in a year, he’s still considered the top receiver in this draft class.  Roth says it’s a credit to his hard work.

Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff deputies say a homeowner used a pair of scissors to fight back against an armed robber who got inside his home. Chief Jimmy Travis says the homeowner feared for his life and two small children as one of the assailants was attacking him…

Twenty-six-year-old Devin Mitchell of Hammond died from his injuries. Travis says Mitchell was one of five people involved in the armed robbery and home invasion. The other four have been arrested. Travis says the homeowner will not be charged…

The four subjects behind bars are facing several charges, including first-degree murder, since their actions led to the death of Mitchell. Travis says the couple that owns the home, arrived at their house while the home invasion was in progress. He says the suspects began aggressively attacking and beating the couple

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife of Fisheries had to make a difficult decision to put down a black bear after it became a threat to public safety in Port Allen. LDWF Biologist Supervisor Scott Durham says after relocating the bear in the woods over the weekend it returned to the West Baton Rouge Parish town.

The bear was put down Tuesday night.

Durham says the bear demonstrated dangerous behaviors in his search for human-sourced food and even made its way on to a porch of someone’s home

Euthanizing a bear does not happen very often in the state, Durham says the leading cause of death for bears is car accidents when they roam. But when a bear becomes accustomed to human food it is very difficult to change their behavior once they begin seeking food in suburban areas.

The bear was originally rescued from a tree in Port Allen on Saturday and relocated to the woods.  However, the same bear returned to the city and became a threat on Tuesday.

State Police’s investigation into last August’s fatal police shooting of Trayford Pellerin has determined the shooting was justified. That’s according to an attorney representing Pellerin’s family. The case will still go before a grand jury. Investigators say Lafayette Police officers shot Pellerin as he attempted to enter a convenience store armed with a knife, but the family says Pellerin was not armed.

An invasive species is wreaking havoc for some Louisiana crawfish farmers. LSU Ag Center Entomologist Blake Wilson says apple snail egg masses are being reported in as many as six parishes.

Wilson says in some fields there has been more than a 50-percent reduction in the overall crawfish catch.

The House Education Committee gave a passing grade to a proposal that ends corporal punishment in Louisiana public schools. The measure passed on a nine to two vote. The Louisiana Association of School Superintendents opposes the legislation. Executive director Michael Faulk says it’s a decision that should be left up to local school systems and he says the 29 school districts that still allow it, must follow certain guidelines…

The Legislative Black Caucus says Chalmette Representative Ray Garofalo should be removed as House Education Chairman. The Pelicans came up short in Denver last night as the Nuggets defeated New Orleans 114 to 112. Zion Williamson had 21 points and his potential game-tying block in the final seconds was blocked by Nikola Jokic, who had 32 points.

House Education approves legislation outlawing the use of corporal punishment in Louisiana public schools. Baton Rouge Representative Barbara Freiberg, a retired educator, says children mirror the behavior they see in adults, and utilizing corporal punishment teaches kids to solve problems using violence.

A bill requiring mandatory reporting on college campuses of power-based abuse passes unanimously in the Louisiana House. New Orleans Representative Aimee Freeman says her bill is a result of the Husch Blackwell Report that found numerous incidents of mishandled cases of sexual assault and harassment at LSU.

LSU Ag Center entomologist Blake Wilson says about three thousand of Louisiana’s estimated 200-thousand acres of crawfish farms have been impacted by the invasive apple snail egg masses, which is resulting in more than a 50-percent reduction in overall crawfish catch. Apple snails were sold in pet stores and Wilson says they believe once the snails reached full size some owners were possibly overwhelmed and released them into Louisiana’s ecosystem in 2016….

As a result of the governor’s latest public health order, LSU announces it will allow full capacity at outdoor sporting events on campus this weekend. The Tigers baseball team will host the top-ranked Razorbacks on Friday, while the Tigers softball team hosts eighth-ranked Arkansas starting on Saturday.

McNeese also announces it will allow full capacity at outdoor events, and the LHSAA State Softball Championships in Sulphur will also not have any capacity restrictions. Semi-final action begins tomorrow.

Tonight the Pelicans will visit the Denver Nuggets. The contest features two of the best scorers in the NBA, Zion Williamson for the Pels and Nikola Jokic for the Nuggets, who scored 37 points against New Orleans the last time these two teams met.

The contract details on new LSU women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey have been released. It’s an eight-year deal that will pay her two-point-five million dollars in the beginning and she will eventually make three-point-three million a year.

The NFL draft begins tomorrow. The Saints have eight picks. General Manager Mickey Loomis says if a prospect opted out last season that will not be a factor on whether they’ll select him. But Loomis admits there’s a lot of players who do not have a lot of collegiate experience…

NFL Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk is reportedly interested in the head coaching job at Southern. The Baton Rouge school is said to be interested in hiring the Super Bowl champion running back.

ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg reports that Louisiana Tech’s Skip Holtz remains in the running for the head coaching vacancy at Kansas.
