Early voting for the U.S. Senate primary runoff elections is underway. The winner of the Republican and Democratic primaries will  advance to the November general election. ULM political science professor Pearson Cross says while there was great anticipation leading up to the May 16th primaries, but there seems to be a sense of apathy leading up to the runoffs.

Local school superintendents are not pleased with the governor’s plan to take 168-million dollars in public school funding and use that money instead to keep paying a two-thousand-dollar stipend for teachers. Rapides Parish Schools Superintendent Jeff Powell, who’s also the president of the Louisiana Association of Superintendents, says the loss of funding will hurt and school leaders are talking to their local lawmakers.

Landry believes his plan is doable and will not result in deep cuts to school operations. A two-thirds vote by the legislature is needed for the plan to pass and mail-in ballots must be turned in by June 23rd.

A documentary on legendary Heisman trophy-winning LSU running back Billy Cannon is set to release the week of this year’s LSU-Ole Miss game. His daughter, Bunnie Cannon, made the project happen. She says she wants to give fans a glimpse at who he truly was.

School Superintendents are not on board with Governor Landry’s plan to use 168-million dollars in public school funding to pay the two-thousand stipend that teachers have received the last three years. During a press conference last week, Landry directed local school systems to use non-instructional dollars to pay the two-thousand-dollar stipend for teachers and one-thousand dollars for support workers. But Rapides Parish schools’ Superintendent Jeff Powell says non-instructional dollar covers a lot of the operating costs.

Lawmakers have until June 23rd to turn in a mail in vote on Landry’s teacher pay plan. It needs two-thirds approval in the House and Senate.

 

An already below-average hurricane season is now forecast to be even more so. Researchers from Colorado State University have revised their original prediction down from 13 to eleven, with just five hurricanes predicted now, two of them expected to be major.  While this is good news, CSU Researcher Nick Mesa says it does not mean we should let our guard down.

The United States begins play in the World Cup tonight as they take on Paraguay in Los Angeles. The nearest host sites to Louisiana are Atlanta, Dallas and Houston, but Paul Boron who does reporting for the Louisiana Soccer Association says tickets are extremely expensive and he says FIFA has done that by design…

The LSU men’s basketball program has officially announced four transfer portal additions to the roster. They are three-point specialist Abdi Bashir (OBB-dee- BUH-sheer) from Kansas State, SEC veteran forward Mo Dioubate (dee-OH-bah-tay) from Kentucky, former U-T-S-A guard Austin Nunez and six-three guard Divine Ugochukwu (oo-go-CHOO-koo) from Michigan State.

A second baseman who played four seasons at Florida has committed to LSU. Cade Kurland was a freshman All-American in 2023 when he hit 17 home runs. Kurland hit 14 more home runs his sophomore campaign but was limited the last two seasons with shoulder and oblique injuries. Kurland could still decide to turn pro if he’s selected high enough in next month’s M-L-B draft.

Which city is the fastest growing city in Louisiana? If you said Carencro, you’d be right. According to census data released last month, between July 1st, 2020, and July 1st, 2025, Carencro’s population grew by almost 42-percent, adding almost four-thousand people to a population that now tops 13-thousand. Mayor Charlotte Clavier (klah-vee-AAE) says many of those people are coming from coastal communities, where homeowners insurance is exponentially more expensive.

Carencro is just north of Lafayette, bisected by I-49, and Mayor Clavier says that means Carencroians have it easy when it comes to heading into Lafayette.

Clavier says the best part about Carencro is the major sense of community.

Clavier notes that homebuilding is very active in Carencro, with about 15-hundred lots in active development at any given time. New construction prices are among the most competitive in the state and in the region.

El Nino conditions have officially developed in the tropical Pacific, and weather experts say it will intensify, possibly into a Super El Nino. LSU Health Climatologist Barry Keim says the most immediate impact to Louisiana’s weather is the higher chances of a quiet hurricane season.

NOAA says there is a 63-percent chance of a Super El Nino, which would reduce the number of tropical storms even more. Keim says we’ve had Super El Ninos in the past.

Keim says not only does El Nino produce a quieter Atlantic hurricane season, it can also produce a wetter and cooler winter and spring if it hangs around that long.

Terrebonne Parish is diversifying its economy; and with it will come hundreds of new jobs. Economic Development Secretary Susan Bourgeois says NovaSpark is expanding by not only adding to its hydrogen generator manufacturing facility in West Monroe, but also by establishing an operation in Houma.

Bourgeois says this is especially a game changer for Houma and Terrebonne Parish, especially in light of a downturn in oil and gas.

The son of LSU baseball legend Eddy Furniss, Will Furniss, is following in his dad’s footsteps at the College World Series. While he won’t be wearing purple and gold, Will has led Ole Miss to Omaha in his senior season. The first baseman hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth to clinch a Super Regional win over Auburn. Eddy says that’s just who he is.

Ole Miss is undefeated in the NCAA Tournament, but all five of their wins have been decided by three runs or less. After some bad luck early in the season, Eddy says things have started going the Rebels’ way.

The Rebels’ College World Series run opens Friday night against North Carolina, the fourth-ranked national seed. While Ole Miss was able to dodge a four-team SEC gauntlet on the other side of the bracket, Eddy says the Tar Heels are no slouch.

Novaspark, which uses air and water to produce power, is expanding its workforce in West Monroe and it’s establishing a new facility in Houma. Novaspark says the expansion will scale production of atmospheric hydrogen generators used in defense and energy applications. State Economic Development Secretary Susan Bourgeois says the project in Terrebonne Parish is expected to create 240 new jobs…

Governor Landry has signed a package of election integrity and security bills designed to enhance election safeguards and further secure Louisiana’s election process. Secretary of State Nancy Landry says one of the measures strengthens the state’s voter ID laws.

Landry says the new voter ID law lists the acceptable forms of identification needed for a voter to cast a ballot if he or she shows up to vote without a state-issued photo ID. It goes into effect July 1st, 2027.

Public School teachers in Richland Parish are set to receive huge bonuses as a result of sales taxes generated from the construction of the 27-billion-dollar Meta A-I Data center. Greg Hilburn of the USA Today Network is reporting the bonus checks could be as much as 50-thousand dollars for vested, certified teachers.

 

Vermilion Catholic in Abbeville has put a new policy in place that prohibits its kindergarten through eighth grade students from using social media. Father Alexander Albert says response to the new policy is mostly positive…

Secretary of State Nancy Lancy applauds Governor Landry for signing three bills that she says will improve election integrity and security. One of the measures requires documentation to verify identity if a voter attempts to vote without a photo ID. Nancy Landry says the governor also signed a bill that requires Louisiana to use the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements program to identify any non-citizen that’s registered to vote in Louisiana.

Jefferson Parish Schools Superintendent James Gray wrote a letter to legislators asking them to find an alternative solution. A two-thirds vote from the House and Senate is needed for this plan to be approved. A vote takes place later this month.

LSU baseball needs contact hitters and a veteran presence in the outfield. Coach Jay Johnson found someone who can handle both roles when it was announced on Wednesday that First Team All-ACC selection Bino Watters committed to the Tigers. Watters entered the transfer portal after a sensational sophomore season at Notre Dame. He hit .362 with 10 home runs and 51 RBIs in 53 games for the Irish in 2026. He struck out only 37 times. Today is the final day of Organized Team Activities for the Saints before the team holds a minicamp next week. Head Coach Kellen Moore praised the confidence his team has gained as the offseason has gone on. He says one player that’s stood out is free agent running back Travis Etienne.

We got more information yesterday about LSU’s upcoming football schedule. The SEC home opener against Texas A&M will kick off in the afternoon or night. The same flex schedule exists for the Alabama, Texas, and Tennessee games. Going to the Kentucky game. That will be a night kick-off. Mississippi State is either 11 AM or noon, while Auburn is set for an 11 AM kick-off.
