LSU begins a pivotal baseball series tonight against 19th ranked Kentucky. The Tigers are 2-and-4 in SEC play and just lost a series at home last weekend and it would not be good if LSU dropped a second consecutive home SEC series. The Wildcats are 4-2 in league play, 20-and-4 overall. First pitch is at 6:30.

Also tonight…the Cajuns host ULM. Louisiana Tech hosts first place Jacksonville State, Nicholls hosts Northwestern, Southeastern hosts UNO.

LSU’s new starting offensive tackle Jordan Seaton says he’s worked out with former Neville and Tiger star Will Campbell. Seaton says seeing Campbell’s mindset toward football played a key role in his decision to end up in Baton Rouge.

The LSU women’s basketball team takes on Duke in a Sweet 16 matchup tonight. The Lady Tigers boast the nation’s top scoring offense, averaging 108  points per game in the postseason. Coach Kim Mulkey credits her team’s depth for its high-scoring success.

ULM introduced Ryan Cross as its new men’s basketball coach yesterday. Cross spent eight seasons as a Warhawk assistant before spending the last six years as an assistant at U-A-B. He says his teams will pride themselves on pushing the ball.

If you’re a Netflix subscriber, be prepared to fork over a little more money. The premium and standard plans each increase by two dollars a month to $26.99 and $19.99 respectively, while the ad-supported plan goes up a dollar to $8.99. Haggai Davis, the host of the TechGumbo radio show and podcast, says the biggest reason is that Netflix is now starting to show live sports.

Davis says this likely will not be the last price increase for Netflix in the near term.

Davis says even though this is the second price increase in less than two years, Netflix does not expect to lose too many subscribers as a result.

The increased prices are in effect immediately for new subscribers, and they will roll out over time for existing subscribers.

The second-seeded LSU women’s basketball team will look to punch its ticket to a fourth consecutive Elite Eight tonight as they face third-seeded Duke at 9 p.m. in Sacramento. In LSU’s 93-77 win over Duke earlier this season, the Tigers had three post players score in double figures. LSU holds a size advantage over Duke and coach Kim Mulkey says the game plan to win the battle in the paint is simple.

The Lady Tigers, who boast the nation’s top scoring offense, are averaging 108.5 points per game in the postseason. Mulkey credits her team’s depth for its high-scoring success this season.

Covington Senator Patrick McMath says the state needs a single office to coordinate programs that could get Louisiana residents eating better and exercising more…

The U-S Senate Republican Primary is getting the most attention, but the 5th District Congressional Republican primary is also very competitive. Radio talk show host Moon Griffon says it’s hard to judge who is the front-runner to replace Julia Letlow…

Board of Regents Chairperson Misti Cordell, state representative Michael Echols, state senator Rick Edmonds and state senator Blake Miguez are the main candidates in the fifth district republican primary. Griffon says none of the candidates have been able to distinguish themselves from the others…

Pollster Greg Rigamer conducted a survey last month on the primary race and it was a virtual tie between the four candidates, all polling in the single digits.

Griffon is curious to see what kind of turnout we’ll see in May and in the June primary runoff. He says voters are not used to big elections in the spring and it’s a busy time of the year…

The US House has rejected the Senate’s DHS funding bill, extending the shutdown that’s caused TSA worker shortages at airports. House Speaker Mike Johnson from Bossier Parish called the Senate’s spending package a “joke” and will ask the House to approve a bill to fund DHS through May 22nd.

The former sheriff of Rapides Parish who was run over and killed this week will be laid to rest today. Andrew Greenstein reports.

A cold front moves through the state tonight and we are looking at a cooler Saturday. And because of the drier air, gusty winds and ongoing drought, conditions will be favorable for wildfires to start and spread. Intentional burning is not recommended tomorrow.

 

Universities could permanently ban a student organization if a hazing incident results in a student’s death under legislation heading to the House floor. The proposal is in response to the death of Southern University student Caleb Wilson, who died in 2025 after he was repeatedly punched in the chest during an off-campus fraternity hazing ritual. Caleb’s mother, Urania Wilson, spoke to the House Education Committee.

The legislation would also require organizations to report hazing incidents to the university.

Will Wade is back in Baton Rouge as he’s signed a seven-year deal to coach the LSU men’s basketball team after he was fired by the school four years ago for NCAA recruiting violations. Will Wade is back in Baton Rouge as the LSU men’s basketball coach four years after he was fired for committing recruiting violations. Wade has signed a seven-year deal that will pay him four-million dollars in his first season. Tiger Rag magazine editor Glenn Guilbeau says the fan base is ready to “Boot Up” again….

Wade was previously the head coach at LSU from 2017 to 2022. His teams reached the NCAA Tournament three times, and the Tigers won an SEC regular season title in 2019.

In a statement, Wade said it was not an easy decision to leave North Carolina State after just one season, but it was a chance to come home to a place that shaped him, and where the passion for basketball runs deep and expectations match the opportunity.

First baseman Zach Yorke broke out of a hitting slump as he belted two home runs against the Bulldogs. Coach Jay Johnson says the two homers should boost Yorke’s confidence…

Kentucky enters this game with a 4-and-2 SEC record. They swept Alabama and lost a series to Ole Miss last weekend.

The Ragin Cajuns host ULM this weekend. UL Lafayette is 2-and-4 in the Sun Belt, while the Warhawks are 4-and-2. Big series for Louisiana Tech as the Bulldogs host Jacksonville State this weekend. The Gamecocks are 6-and-0 to start Conference USA play.

Northwestern State is in a three-way tie for first place in the Southland and the Demons visit Nicholls this weekend.

It’s a day many LSU basketball fans have been waiting for. Will Wade is returning to be the Tigers head coach again. Wade was the head coach at LSU from 2017 to 2022 and in those five seasons, the Tigers went to the NCAA Tournament three times.

Wade’s old boss at McNeese is also headed to LSU as Cowboys athletics director Heath Schroyer will be a Senior Deputy AD at LSU as of April 11th.  Jim Gazzolo, who covers McNeese athletics for the American Press, says what Schroyer did for McNeese is remarkable…

Jim Gazzolo covers McNeese athletics for the American Press and says Wade would not leave North Carolina State for LSU if Schroyer is not at LSU…

Schroyer hired Wade as McNeese’s head coach in 2023, a year after he was fired at LSU for committing NCAA recruiting violations.

Schroyer arrived on campus in 2018 as the Cowboys head basketball coach. He was elevated to Athletics Director in June 2020, during the middle of the COVID pandemic and right before two major hurricanes that struck southwest Louisiana. LSU will soon be launching a bachelor’s degree program in artificial intelligence. The four-year program is the first of its kind in Louisiana. James Ghawaly (guh-WALL-ee), an assistant professor of science and engineering at LSU, says this degree program goes well beyond simply how to use A-I.

Along with building new A-I technologies from the ground up, students will also learn the ethics of using A-I, which Ghawaly says is standard procedure in most engineering programs these days. He says students will also learn how to detect whether video content was created using A-I.

Monroe Senator Stewart Cathey does not believe politicians should be able to run for a seat in the U-S House of Representatives if they do not live in the district they are seeking to represent. Cathey brought Senate Concurrent Resolution number nine up for debate in the Governmental Affairs committee…

The legislation is directed at Blake Miguez, who lives near New Iberia, but is seeking to represent a Congressional district that covers the Monroe and Baton Rouge areas. The Senate Governmental Affairs Committee reported the resolution without action, which technically kills the measure for the session…

Cathey was looking at running for the 5th district congressional seat currently occupied by Julia Letlow, but abandoned a campaign when President Trump endorsed Miguez.

Cathey says if you run for U-S Senate, you have to live in the state that you represent. State legislators have to live in the district that they represent and the same rule should apply for members of the U-S House of Representatives. But Houma Senator Mike Fesi says federal law allows for a U-S Representative to live outside of their district…

Fesi did not feel comfortable passing a resolution in Louisiana when there are 25 members of the U-S House of Representatives who do not live in the district they represent…

One of Secretary of State Nancy Landry’s election integrity bills advances to the next step. House Bill 691, which provides for the investigation of non-citizens found to be on the state’s voter rolls, advances out of House Governmental Affairs on a party-line vote and moves to the full House. Landry says a recent check of the state’s voter rolls through a federal database found hundreds of ineligible voters.

We now know what’s in the 20-year Master Plan for Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport.  Walt Leger, the president of New Orleans and Company, says it includes, a second terminal facility, additional gates, an additional parking garage, and improvement to the roadway system. He says it’s important that they tackle the expansion now.
