Today marks the 21st anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and the 5th anniversary of Hurricane Ida. On this date in 2005, Katrina made landfall as a category 5 storm, breaching levees in New Orleans, flooding roughly 80% of the city. Hurricane Katrina was responsible for more than 1,400 deaths across the Gulf Coast and left behind more than 125 billion dollars in damages. Hurricane Ida made landfall in Port Fourchon in 2021. The Category 4 hurricane packed 140 mile an hour winds causing catastrophic damage to the power grid, flood destruction, and leaving behind 75 billion dollars in damages.
