The House Appropriations Committee has approved an operating budget of 47 billion dollars for next fiscal year. Even though it’s a standstill budget, there are areas that will see an increase in state funding. House legislative leadership is also going along with Governor Landry’s request to double the funding for the Louisiana Gator Scholarship program. Doubling the funding of the school voucher program from 44 million dollars to nearly 88-million dollars. McFarland says the public wants expanded school choice…

Senate President Cameron Henry does not support increasing the funding for LA Gator. He’s concerned the voucher program that would help families pay for private school tuition and other educational expenses will become too costly.

The Louisiana Attorney General’s Office has announced the arrest of Pollock Police Chief Chris Paul.  Paul is accused of having officers patrol, issue citations, and make arrests on and around the grounds of the Federal Correctional Complex, which is outside the city limits of Pollock. This activity allegedly occurred from 2022 to last September.

A poll paid for and conducted by the Rainey Center Freedom Project shows that the 5th District Congressional Republican Primary is a two-person race between state representative Michael Echols and state senator Blake Miguez. Rainey Freedom Project director Russ Walker says the survey of nearly 900 likely voters, has Miguez receiving 23-percent of the vote and Echols getting 20-percent…

Twenty-two-percent of the respondents found Miguez unfavorable as compared to Echols who had the highest favorability rating and only 10-percent found him unfavorable. Walker says Miguez living outside of the 5th District Congressional boundary hurts his campaign…

Baton Rouge Senator Rick Edmonds finished third in the poll at 10-percent, while Board of Regents Chairperson Misti Cordell is only receiving three-percent of the vote. Miguez has the endorsement of President Trump, but Walker says 45-percent of respondents said Trump’s endorsement is not important to their vote…

A single-vehicle crash in Bossier Parish claimed the lives of 10-year-old Bella Cassell and 31-year-old Callie Durbin, both of Benton, and left another person injured on Saturday. State Trooper Eddie Thomas says the three were traveling on Merritt Road in a UTV driven by Cassell when the vehicle suddenly left the roadway and overturned.

Durbin was pronounced dead at the scene, while Cassell was transported to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. The third juvenile passenger suffered moderate injuries.

Thomas says that the State Police are still investigating the crash.

All three passengers were not wearing seat belts or DOT-approved helmets and were ejected from the UTV after it overturned. Thomas encourages those who operate or ride in UTVs to significantly reduce their chances of injury or death by taking the proper safety measures to protect themselves.

Gas prices are actually a few pennies cheaper compared to last week. According to Triple-A, the statewide average for regular gasoline is $3.76 a gallon, which is three cents cheaper than a week ago. Triple-A fuel analyst Don Redman says despite the slight break, drivers are paying way more than they did last year…

Redman says the statewide average a year ago was $2.79. But he says it’s good to see prices at the pump have leveled off for the first time since the war with Iran began on February 28th…

There is currently a two-week ceasefire, but a deal to end the war is not in place after 21 hours of negotiations over the weekend.  Redman says even if a long-term peace deal is reached soon, expect to pay high gas prices for the next several months…

The Pelicans closed out the 2025-26 season with a 132-126 loss to the Timberwolves on Sunday night. New Orleans finished 11th in the Western Conference with a 26-56 record, the third-worst mark in franchise history over an 82-game season. Interim head coach James Borrego, who took over in November and led the team to a 24-46 record, says the team made significant improvements this season under his leadership.

The Pelicans will now begin the formal process of finding a new head coach, with Borrego among the candidates expected to be considered. Borrego says he has spoken with Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations Joe Dumars about the season, but the two have not discussed the possibility of him returning. Borrego says that one of the reasons he believes he’s a strong fit for the job is his ability to connect with players.

Impairment is not suspected but the accident is under investigation.

After a this kind of tragedy, Trooper Laverne says State Police want to remind the public that UTVs and ATVs are not allowed on roadways after dark and only allowed for farming activities during the day. She also says, wearing safety gear can save lives.

The author of House Bill 750, Vincent Cox of Gretna, says the goal is to make it just as easy to cancel a subscription as it is to sign up for one. Cox says he’s been in close contact with industry leaders to fine-tune the bill.

Cox says one of the changes he’s making is to take companies that are regulated by the FCC out of it, so this legislation would not impact a subscription you may have with your cable company.

Lawmakers are back at the state capitol to begin the fourth week of the regular session. One of the bills that has caught the attention of the public is a measure by Gretna Representative Vincent Cox that would require subscription-based companies to make easy for a person to cancel their subscription. Cox says he’s still working on some amendments…

Nearly one-point-one million Louisianians live in rural parishes. Residents in these areas face higher rates of chronic disease, limited access to care and significant health care workforce shortages.

Burns nearly battled back into contention with three birdies on the back nine to finish the tournament tied for seventh at nine under par. Rory McIlroy won his second straight green jacket as he finished at 12-under par.

LSU scored seven runs in the seventh inning to erase a seven-run deficit, but the Tigers still lost eight to seven as they were swept by Ole Miss. Coach Jay Johnson’s team didn’t get a hit in the first six innings, but exploded in the seventh thanks to three consecutive home runs. But LSU could not handle a ground ball through the right side of the infield, which led to the go-ahead run scoring in the seventh…

The full state House will soon hear a bill that aims to make it easier for people in Louisiana to cancel their unwanted subscriptions. Andrew Greenstein reports.

Coming up today at the State Capitol, the House Appropriations Committee will vote on the proposed budget for next fiscal year and several other funding bills. It will give us an idea on what the House legislative leadership’s priorities are when it comes to spending. How much money will be spent on the L-A Gator program is one area of interest.

Abita Brewing Company is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. The first two brews they produced at their brewery in Covington were Abita Golden and Abita Amber. In the first year, they produced 15-hundred barrels of beer. Now they have 17 year-round brews, several seasonal beers, plus craft sodas, hop water, and they’ve recently added ready-to-drink cocktails.

Last week, LSU women’s basketball lost its starting point guard, Jada Richard, to the transfer portal. Coach Kim Mulkey moved quickly to find her replacement as she received a commitment from Jada Williams, who averaged 15 points and nearly eight assists for Iowa State last season. Williams was a first-team All-Big 12 selection.

And another bad season came to an end for the Pelicans last night as they lost to the Timberwolves 132-126. The Pels finish with a record of 26 and 56. Third-worst record in an 82-game season.

McNeese will introduce Bridget Martin as its new athletics director today after serving as the interim A-D following the departure of Heath Schroyer to LSU. Martin is a native of Lake Arthur and she’s worked at McNeese since 1990 when she was hired as a women’s basketball coach….

Martin went into administration in 2001. She served as the department’s Senior Woman Administrator and NCAA Compliance Director. In 2023, she was promoted to Deputy AD. She’s McNeese’s first female AD and only the fourth in women’s history…

Martin takes over an athletic program that’s seeing success in several sports, especially in basketball. She says the resources are there to have a great athletic program on the FCS level.

LSU has crossed the halfway point of spring practice. Cornerback DJ Pickett is looking to improve on a freshman campaign that saw him lead the team with three interceptions. Pickett says the energy during the spring has been great…

Pickett appeared in all 13 games last season and made three starts. He saw action on more than 500 defensive snaps on his way to receiving Freshman All-American honors. Pickett also had 37 tackles, three tackles for a loss and a sack.  Pickett says he had a pretty good freshman year, but believes he could’ve done better…

Ole Miss turned three balls hit in the infield to begin the eighth inning into three runs to beat the LSU Tigers six to three last night. An error by freshman second baseman Ethan Clauss was the big play. Clauss failed to step on second base for a force out as the Tigers were trying to turn a double play. That mistake allowed West Monroe’s Hayden Federico to drive in the go-ahead run. At the plate, LSU was two-for-11 with runners in scoring position.

Elsewhere… 10th-ranked Southern Miss defeated the Ragin Cajuns eight to one. Appalachian State beat ULM 13-5.

La Tech trounced Middle Tennessee eight to one. Colby Lunsford drove in three runs, and Declan Dahl allowed one unearned run over seven innings and struck out eight for his fifth win.

Southern held on to beat Grambling seven to five. Game two is at 3 PM today.

It was a tough night for most of the Louisiana schools in the Southland, other than Nicholls. The Colonels blanked Lamar three to nothing. Dawson Richard threw six shutout innings for the win. Peyton Lacy earned the save.

It was Corpus Christi over Southeastern Louisiana seven to five, Houston Christian defeated Northwestern State five to two, UIW over McNeese six to two.

McNeese has named Bridget Martin as its new athletics director. Martin has worked at the Lake Charles school since 1990, and she’s been an administrator at McNeese since 2001.

Johnny Jones is officially back at LSU. The DeRidder native will be an assistant coach for the men’s basketball team for a second time. He’s also been a head coach for the Tigers. As a player, he helped LSU reach the Final Four in 1981.

Shreveport golfer Sam Burns is tied for second at six-under par at the Masters, but he’s six shots back of the leader Rory McIlroy.

The LSU baseball team opens a three-game series tonight at Ole Miss in Oxford. Tigers pitcher Gavin Guidry says getting off the field quickly and inducing short innings will be key against an Ole Miss team that capitalizes on mistakes and errors…

LSU baseball is getting more revenue share dollars next season. In an interview with Tiger Rag Magazine in February, Head Coach Jay Johnson expressed concern that not enough financial resources were being put into the program. Athletic Director Verge Ausberry tells ESPN Radio Baton Rouge they want to make sure Johnson has what he needs to win.

Ausberry says LSU baseball and women’s basketball will receive the same when it comes to revenue sharing dollars and there will be more NIL dollars available for the LSU baseball program.

 

The Ragin Cajuns baseball team has been struggling in recent weeks, but they could turn their season around with a good performance this weekend as they host 10th ranked Southern Miss. U-L Lafayette is 4-and-8 in Sun Belt play. The Golden Eagles are 7-and-5.

ULM is also 7-and-5 in the Sun Belt and the Warhawks are at Appalachian State, who is 5-and-7.

Louisiana Tech hosts Middle Tennessee for a three-game set this weekend. The Blue Raiders are 5-and-7 in Conference USA, while the Bulldogs are 6-and-6.

Northwestern State is in first place in the Southland the Demons will host Houston Christian this weekend. Southeastern Louisiana, who has won eight of its last night, will host Texas a-and-M Corpus Christi this weekend.

Also this weekend..Nicholls hosts Lamar and McNeese hosts UIW.

The Cowboys name Lake Arthur native Bridget Martin as the new athletics director at McNeese. She’s worked at the school since 1990 and replaces Heath Schroyer.
