Kevan Brumfield was convicted in the shooting death of Cpl. Betty Smothers. Legal analyst Tim Meche says this case will head back to lower courts for hearings…

And, as a result of the 5-4 decision from the high court, he says this may cause many convictions in Louisiana to be re-evaluated.

Governor Bobby Jindal has lost an appeal of his Common Core lawsuit, that would allow the suspension on the testing contracts of the curriculum. A three judge panel called the move by Jindal “unconstitutional interference.” Parents and educators sued, and the testing still took place this past spring. Jindal says he will appeal.

US Treasury Department announces a woman will soon grace the face of the 10 dollar bill. Director of the LSU Women’s Center Summer Steib says it’s very exciting news and something many organizations have pushed for.

Steib says the new currency won’t be released until 2020, to mark 100 years since woman received the right to vote. She says having a woman on the 10 dollar bill will be another milestone for women.

With Father’s Day being Sunday, a WalletHub-dot-com study on the best states for working dads finds Louisiana near the bottom of the list. The Bayou State ranks 47th out of all 50 states and the District of Columbia. WalletHub spokesperson Jill Gonzales says they looked at four different categories from a father’s perspective: economic and social well being, health, work-life balance, and child care…

Only West Virginia, Arkansas, Nevada, and Mississippi ranked lower than Louisiana. Gonzales says the study found that the state has the lowest child care cost in the nation, but ranked third worst in day care quality…

Meche says the ruling establishes that an IQ of 75 qualifies as mentally retarded, which would protect a prisoner from the death penalty. He says this ruling doesn’t overturn Brumfield’s conviction, it just raises the question of whether or not he will be executed for his crime. Meche says the case will now go back to lower courts for more hearings…

Meche points out that Brumfield has been going to court for 20 years and this ruling could drag matters out for another five to seven years. Meche says this decision will cause a lot of convictions and sentences in Louisiana to be looked at…

The remnants of Tropical Storm Bill continue to dump significant amounts of rain in Texas, Oklahoma, and northwest Louisiana and officials have been told that another flood event is predicted for the Red River. Caddo Parish Sheriff Steve Prator says it’s expected that the Red will crest again in the next seven to ten days…

The Red River crested June 9th at 37 feet, seven feet above flood stage. Prator says the river could rise again to 33 or 34 feet in the next week to week and a half. He says residents along the Red River should hold off on any work on their home…

The Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office says a man is dead after falling off of a barge at a recycling center in Gibson. They say 44-year-old James Patrick Lafleur of Morgan City was a welder on the platform barge when he fell nearly 60 feet to the barge’s base. Lafleur was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Governor Bobby Jindal announced today that Netchex will be building a new headquarters facility in Mandeville investing $5.3 million to lease the space for 2 years followed by the completion of a new building. The expansion retains 86 jobs and creates 240 new direct jobs with an average salary of $43,800 plus benefits.

On Wednesday the 1st Circuit Court of Appeal agrees that Governor Bobby Jindal can’t do away with testing contracts tied to the controversial Common Core Education Standards. Jindal suspended the contracts last year saying they weren’t properly procured but a district judge lifted the suspension and this week the appeals court upheld that ruling.

LSU Shortstop Alex Bregman is expected to hit in the lead-off spot again. Bregman says they hope to improve on what they did at the plate on Tuesday…

According to 24-7 sports, the LSU football team’s 2016 recruiting class is number one in the nation after receiving a verbal commitment from the top safety in the country. Eric Monroe from Houston reportedly chose the Tigers over Texas A-and-M. LSU has also received a verbal pledge from linebacker Rahssan Thornton, a three-star prospect, who is also from Texas.

Former ULM football coach John David Crow has passed away at the age of 79. Crow coached and served as athletic director of the Northeastern Louisiana Indians from 1976 to 1980. Crow was born in Marion, Louisiana and graduated from Springhill. He won a Heisman Trophy while playing for Texas A-and-M.

Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon is asking FEMA to give homeowners impacted by Red River floodwaters in northwest and central Louisiana more time to file a claim. The National Flood Insurance Program requires homeowners to file within 60 days of a flood but Donelon says many will need longer than that to collect the forms they need.

The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s office reports a 26-year-old A.A.U. basketball coach is under arrest for allegedly sending explicit pictures and text messages to a female juvenile. The victim’s family contacted deputies and after an investigation they booked Adrian Steib Jr. on charges of computer aided solicitation of a minor and indecent behavior with a juvenile.

There’s a bill on Governor Bobby Jindal’s desk which would put into law a provision allowing cops equipment on patrol cars to scan someone’s license plate as a way to catch uninsured motorists.

Pete Adams, executive director of the Louisiana District Attorneys Association, says the photo of the license plate will only be used to catch uninsured motorists, track down stolen vehicles and help authorities in emergency situations.

Amite Police say a Roseland man is under arrest accused of killing his neighbor Wednesday. They say 39-year-old Jermaine Williams and 27-year-old Joshua Lee were having an argument when Williams pulled a gun and shot Lee five times. Williams also allegedly shot at Lee’s girlfriend. Williams is charged with second degree murder and attempted second degree murder. Authorities believe an ongoing feud between the men led to the incident.

Shreveport Police say a 13-year-old boy is recovering in a local hospital after being shot in the head last night. They say the juvenile rode his bike from the scene to his mother’s house, some two miles away, before being transported to the hospital. The boy is expected to be OK. Police are working to determine what the boy was shot with and the identity of those involved.
