A man in Baton Rouge is facing charges amid allegations he ordered his pit bulls to attack workers who came to his home to cut electricity because he’d not paid his bill. It’s reported that 47-year-old Michael Barcia then instructed the dogs to attack two responding sheriff’s deputies. He faces charges of aggravated assault and public intimidation.

Attorney Lance Unglesby says Ascension Parish President Kenny Matassa did not bribe Gonzales city council candidate, Wayne Lawson, in an effort to get him out of the race. Unglesby says Matassa was actually offering Lawson a loan to get him out of financial trouble.

Allegations surfaced earlier this week when an audio recording was released that purportedly has Matassa and a business partner offering Lawson 12-hundred dollars.  Unglesby says Matassa’s intent was not to bribe Lawson for the benefit of the incumbent in the race, Neal Bourque.

Ascension Parish District Attorney Ricky Babin decided to open the investigation after audio was released on the website, the Pelican Post, of a private conversation between Lawson, Matassa and his friend Olin Berthelot. He says his office is working with the Attorney General’s office to put the facts together.

Babin says the fact that these allegations were made is very troubling and they take cases like this very seriously.

Louisiana’s FastStart workforce training program has been ranked the best in the nation for the seventh year in a row by the corporate site selection website, Business Facilities. Louisiana Economic Development Secretary Don Pierson says what really drives the program’s success is the workforce in Louisiana.

FastStart has helped over 150 companies in Louisiana and provided training for more than 23-thousand employees in the past 8 years. Pierson says the program draws companies to Louisiana and then finds them qualified workers to fill positions once the facilities open.

Pierson says similar programs in other states have also done well, and it’s only by constantly improving our program that Louisiana has remained the best program in the country for seven years running.

Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser announces that international travel to Louisiana has increased 36% over the past year. He says that puts Louisiana second only to Michigan for annual growth. He says international tourism has huge benefits for the state.

Nungesser says New Orleans saw a 37% increase during the same time period and this is the third consecutive year of double digit growth in international visitors. He credits Louisiana’s great food and culture and its people for the big increase in tourists from outside of the United States.

The Fox Sports’ college football preseason poll has LSU ranked fourth. Alabama is ranked number one, followed by Florida State and then Clemson. College football expert Phil Steele says LSU is loaded this season. He says the key will be getting above average play of the quarterback position….

The Sun Belt Conference has announced that the American Sports Network will televise some of their football and basketball games this year. And ASN has already announced that they’ll televise two Ragin Cajun football games, the season opener against Boise State on September 3rd and the September 17th matchup against South Alabama. In baseball…the Phillies have placed former LSU pitcher Aaron Nola on the disabled list, because of a strained right elbow. The 23-year-old right-hander is 6-9 with a 4.78 ERA in his first full season in the Majors.

Colonel John Fortunado says 29-year-old Generra Brown was caring for a neighbor across the street, when the two boys were playing in a closet and came across a handgun…

Louisiana has received $400-thousand from the Centers for Disease Control to fight Zika. Dr. Frank Welch with the Department of Health says there have been 17 Zika cases in Louisiana, and all of them have been travel related. But he says there is a possibility for local transmission in Louisiana because the mosquito that carries the virus is active here.

John Fortunato with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office says police received a call from the children’s mother, 29-year-old Generra Brown, and when first responders arrived at the scene, they made a horrific discovery.

Human remains found in the Grand Canyon are believed to be those of a Louisiana woman who’s been missing since April. Rangers located the remains near the South Rim and believe the body is that of 22-year-old Diana Zacarias of Natchitoches. Officials say she arrived at the canyon the day before she was reported missing, but the National Park Service was unable to locate her after several days of searching.

John Fortunato with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office says police received a call from the children’s mother, 29-year-old Generra Brown, and when first responders arrived at the scene, they made a horrific discovery.

The 5-year-old has been identified as Melvin Brady. Fortunato says the two boys were playing in a closet when they came across a handgun.

Fortunato says a semiautomatic handgun was found lying next to the child. He says the boys’ mother was not home at the time of the shooting.

Fortunato says no charges have been filed at this time, and the investigation is ongoing.

An employee has been arrested in Thibodaux for allegedly stealing money from her register at work in order to pay for braces and her education. Thibodaux Police spokesperson David Melancon says 20-year-old Tralvaunta Bentley pocketed a lot of money in just over two weeks…:

Two big position battles to watch during fall camp are at left tackle and nose tackle. Davon Godchaux and Christian LaCouture will battle at starting nose tackle, while Maea Teuhema and KJ Malone will battle for a spot at left tackle.

Saints cornerback Keenan Lewis was activated from the physically unable to perform list and back on the practice field this morning at training camp in West Virginia. Lewis appeared in just six games last season, because of knee and hip injuries, plus he also had a sports hernia.

The Associated Press has ranked the all-time top 100 football programs in honor of this being the 80th anniversary of the AP Poll. Ohio State is ranked number one, followed by Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Alabama and USC. LSU is ranked 11th and Tulane 70th. The AP counted poll appearances, number one rankings and national championships to determine an all-time Top 100.

The Sun Belt Conference announces that the American Sports Network will broadcast some of their games this season. ASN contests will be shown “over-the-air” and on cable affiliates, but they will also be available without blackout restrictions on ESPN 3 and the WatchESPN app. Two UL Lafayette football games will be ASN broadcasts, the September 3rd home game against Boise State and the September 17th contest against South Alabama.

15 current, former and incoming LSU athletes will represent seven different countries at the Summer Olympics in Brazil.
