Authorities say at least 13 people have died in Lafayette and the surrounding area this year as a result of overdosing from the drug Fentanyl. Lafayette Police Corporal Paul Mouton says they are trying to identify the dealers of this drug that’s 50 times more potent than heroin…

The Louisiana Department of Health has confirmed four more Zika cases in Louisiana. Officials say like the other cases in Louisiana, these people also traveled to South America. This brings the total number of travel-related cases in Louisiana to 19. Local transmission has still not occurred in the Bayou State.

Inspector General Stephen Street says 51-year-old Tommy Shoemaker started stealing from the victim in 2012, after he gained access to his banking information. He says Shoemaker stole upwards of $6-thousand.

National Farmers Market Week gets underway tomorrow in Alexandria at Inglewood Farms. Every child who attends will receive a 5-dollar token to use with the vendors to buy healthy snacks. A Thibodaux man has been arrested after stealing donation containers from multiple convenience stores in Houma. Maj. Malcom Wolfe with the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office says 34-year-old Walter Richard was caught on video at one of the stores.

Wolfe says the video was posted on social media, and people called in giving the suspect’s name. He says authorities then found more stores that had been robbed.

Wolfe says Richard was booked on four counts of theft for stealing those containers. He says Richard has a history of stealing as he’s also been accused of shoplifting at Best Buy and Rouses Superstores.

The 17th annual National Farmers Market Week kicks off Saturday in Alexandria at Inglewood Farms and runs until the 13th. USDA State Conservationist Kevin Norton says this is an opportunity to celebrate the connection that these markets bring for farmers and agriculture in urban settings.

Lafayette Metro Narcotics and the Sheriff’s Office are warning the public about a dangerous drug believed to be responsible for multiple deaths. Lafayette Police Corporal Paul Mouton says the drug’s name is Fentanyl and it’s a potent synthetic opioid that’s similar to Heroin. He says when the supply is cut off for people addicted to prescription drugs, they often turn to Heroin….

Mouton says Fentanyl is 50 times more potent than heroin so when it’s used in the same manner it can be deadly. He says they’re working with local and state officials to identify the dealers of the dangerous drug.

Mouton says if you know someone who is a drug user, it’s time to get them help before they purchase Fentanyl. He says since the beginning of the year there have been 8 Fentanyl related deaths inside the City of Lafayette and 5 outside the city.

The patients traveled to regions in the Americas with ongoing Zika transmission and tests here confirmed the viral infection. This brings the total to 19 cases of travel-associated Zika confirmed in Louisiana. Although the state of Florida has reported several locally transmitted cases in that state, this is not the situation in Louisiana.

Louisiana Tech senior starting quarterback Ryan Higgins was arrested this morning in Ruston on a DWI charge. A police report says Higgins was speeding, performed poorly on sobriety tests and had a blood-alcohol concentration of .119. Head Coach Skip Holtz says they are aware of the situation, but won’t release any further comments until they gather all of the information and talk with all of the parties involved. The Bulldogs kickoff fall camp on Sunday.

The battle for starting quarterback is underway at UL Lafayette. Cajuns Coach Mark Hudspeth says Anthony Jennings, Jordan Davis and Jalen Nixon each had a good first day, with each taking turns with the number one offense.

There’s also a quarterback battle at McNeese State. Grant Ashcraft, Joe Lissard and James Tabany each took equal reps with the one and twos on the first day of camp.

And Northwestern State has added a pair of transfer defensive backs, Baylor walk-on Justin Barnes and California community college safety Eric Waters.

Public school students will learn more about money and finances in school this year, thanks to a bill by Minden Representative Gene Reynolds. He says the law does not establish a class just for financial literacy but allows teachers to incorporate it into their lessons. He says most text books have at least a small part that deals with money…:

Officials have identified body of a pilot whose helicopter crashed in the Atchafalaya Basin as 29-year-old Casey Clark of Great Falls Montana. Authorities say he was the only person on board the aircraft at the time, and was known to have left Gonzales around 4pm Wednesday, but never made it to its destination.

Louisiana Tech Quarterback Ryan Higgins was arrested early this morning for a DWI and speeding, according to authorities. The Bulldogs are slated to begin fall camp on Sunday. Ruston Police arrested Higgins at 3:20 am, and he was booked at 5 on a $1,750 bond.
