Authorities are working to determine the identity of a woman who was murdered and burned beyond recognition near Bogalusa. Washington Parish Sheriff Chief Deputy Mike Haley says they received a call early Wednesday morning about a murder at the residence of 41-year-old Joey Mixon.

Haley says after the confession, Mixon led detectives to the location of the body, which was badly burned. Officials believe the victim is from St. Tammany parish. He says her family has been notified and provided DNA for identification.

Haley says Mixon has been booked on one count of second degree murder. He says they know Mixon knew the victim and they’d gotten into an argument, but they still have a lot of unanswered questions.

The hurricane forecast team at Colorado State University continues to predict a near average Atlantic hurricane season. Researcher Dr. Phil Klotzbach says they’re expecting to see 10 named storms and four more hurricanes. But he says given how quiet the last three years have been, this season will seem a lot more active…

Klotzbach says the season will really pick up in the middle of August. He says there is a 29-percent chance of a major hurricane making landfall on the Gulf Coast.

Klotzbach says an El Nino the last couple of years kept hurricane activity down. He says we don’t have an El Nino, which will lead to more tropical storms.

The state Department of Education announced Louisiana students are showing improvement after receiving the results of the 2016 LEAP assessments. Superintendent of Education John White says these are promising results. He says this year students improved in English and math with 38-percent achieving mastery compared to 33 percent in 2015.

White says although we are seeing progress, the results also show that many groups of students in our state are significantly behind their peers. He says often times those gaps cut across lines of race, income, and disability.

White says even though overall student performance improved, the achievement gap between African-American students and white students at the Mastery level is at 26-percent.

The Department of Transportation announces that a new on-ramp will be built in place of the Washington Street exit on Interstate 10 in Baton Rouge. Governor John Bel Edwards says alleviating congestion on I-10 is critically important for shipping commerce across the country.

Edwards says the project will be funded through state dollars because a federal grant freed up more money in the construction budget. He says this is the only area in the country where the interstate comes down to one lane, and it causes serious traffic problems.

A former assistant administrator for the Northeast Louisiana War Veterans Home is facing charges amid allegations he was stealing from an infirm resident. 51-year-old Thomas Shoemaker is charged with exploitation of the infirmed and theft of the assets of an aged person or disabled person. The victim suffered from several ailments including dementia. Shoemaker is accused of, among other things, using the victims ATM card without permission.

The body of the pilot of the helicopter that crashed into the Atchafalaya Basin Wednesday has been located. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says several agencies worked this morning to locate the aircraft and the pilot. The wreckage site is in the Grand Lake area. The pilot was the only person on board. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Louisiana leaders held a news conference Thursday morning to provide information related to a federal grant for transportation infrastructure. Gov. John Bel Edwards said $20-$25 million of savings brought on by the grants will be used to create a new I-10 off-ramp at the Washington Street exit in Baton Rouge.

The state Department of Education announced today that students in Louisiana are starting to reach higher levels of proficiency on state tests. This year 38 percent of students mastered math and English, compared to 33 percent in 2015. Superintendent John White says the trend indicates that students, teachers, and schools are adjusting to higher expectations implemented through a four-year transition period.

A helicopter that crashed into the Atchafalaya Basin has been found, according to the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office, but officials are still searching for the pilot. They say the aircraft, which was privately owned, was initially flying from Gonzales to New Orleans, but had to reroute due to a patch of bad weather.

The workforce training program in Louisiana has been named the best in the nation by the corporate site selection website, Business Facilities. Louisiana Economic Development Secretary Don Pierson says FastStart has helped over 150 companies in Louisiana and provided training for more than 23-thousand employees in the past 8 years…:

Fall camp is underway at LSU as the Tigers held their first practice of the 2016 season this morning. LSU is considered one of the favorites to win the Southeastern Conference and play in the College Football Playoff. They’ll need to get good play from quarterback Brandon Harris. Coach Les Miles says he likes the poise the junior brings to the field…

Veterans practiced this morning and the freshman will practice this afternoon.

Fall camp is also underway for the Ragin Cajuns. UL Lafayette has a new offensive coordinator in Jorge Munoz and there’s a battle for starting quarterback. Jordan Davis and LSU transfer Anthony Jennings are competing for the job.

LSU is ranked sixth in the USA Today Coaches Poll. Alabama is ranked number one, followed by Clemson, Oklahoma, Florida State and Ohio State. Tennessee is ranked 10th, Ole Miss 12th, Georgia 16th, and Florida 25th.

Fall practice began this morning for the ULM Warhawks. First year head coach Matt Viator says there will be a lot installing on offense, defense and special teams, plus reteaching what they taught in the spring.

Viator’s old school, McNeese State, has also started fall camp. The Cowboys return 13 starters from a team that went 10-0 in the regular season last year.

Southeastern Louisiana is glad to have running back Rasheed Harrell and fullback Juwaan Rogers back on the football field as the Lions start fall camp. Both watched from the sidelines last year as S-L-U went 4-and-7.

And Former LSU baseball star Ryan Schimpf has been named the National Legue Rookie of the Month for July. The Covington native hit a franchise record nine home runs last month for the Padres.

The civilian helicopter that crashed into the Atchafalaya Basin yesterday has been found, according to Iberia Parish Sheriff Louis Ackal. Authorities say they’re still searching for the pilot. Ackal says the helicopter was privately owned. The pilot was initially flying from Gonzales to New Orleans but rerouted to Patterson after hitting stormy weather.

Attorney Lance Unglesby denies allegations that Ascension Parish President Kenny Matassa bribed Gonzales city council candidate, Wayne Lawson, to drop out of the race. Jeff Palermo has more on the case…

The state’s annual sales tax holiday is this Friday and Saturday. Shoppers will only have to pay 3-percent sales tax on purchases rather that 5-percent. International travel to Louisiana has increased 36-percent over the last year according to Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser. Nungesser says New Orleans saw a 37% increase and this is the third year in a row of double digit growth in international visitors. A man in Baton Rouge is facing charges amid allegations he ordered his pit bulls to attack workers who came to his home to cut electricity because he’d not paid his bill. It’s reported that 47-year-old Michael Barcia then instructed the dogs to attack two responding sheriff’s deputies. He faces charges of aggravated assault and public intimidation.

LSU is considered one of the favorites to win the Southeastern Conference and play in the College Football Playoff. The Tigers are ranked No. 4 in Fox Sports’ college football preseason poll. Alabama tops the list, followed by Florida State, and Clemson. The SEC placed six teams in the top 25.

The Saints get back to work today in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia after making some roster moves. The big news is that Saints defensive back Keenan Lewis is off the physically unable to perform list and returns to practice. The Black and Gold have signed safety Jamal Golden, defensive end Matt Shaughnessy and offensive lineman Jordan Walsh.

ULM’s football practice gets underway today. Coach Matt Viator, who enters his first season with the Warhawks, says he wants to carry over the lessons of spring camp. ULM will begin the fall with a couple days of practice in shorts and then shells before going to full pads beginning Monday morning.

It’s not official yet, but it could be coming soon. Sources say New Orleans is closing in on a deal with the NBA to host the 2017 All Star Game. If it happens, a formal announcement is expected to take place early next week.

In the MLB, the Phillies have placed former LSU star pitcher Aaron Nola on the 15-day disabled list with a strained elbow.

Former tiger baseball standout Ryan Schimph was named Wednesday to the National League’s rookie of the month.
