Louisiana Citizens policyholders seeking financial assistance to fortify their roof against wind damage can apply for a grant of up to ten thousand dollars at noon today. 500 grants were made available two weeks ago and it took over two minutes before they were gone. Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon says interested homeowners should register before the grants are made available…

Cut 4 (10) “…other folks.”

There’s a link to register for the Louisiana Fortify Homes Program on the Department of Insurance’s homepage. Donelon says the program will provide grants of up to 10-thousand dollars for homeowners to repair or replace their roofs to the Fortified Roof standard.

He says Citizens policyholders are only eligible for the grants that will be awarded today, the homeowners with private insurance will be eligible for the next round of grants that will be handed out…

Besides being a Citizens policyholder, Donelon says there are a couple of other qualifications needed in order to be eligible for the grants that will be distributed today…

Donelon homeowners who live in a FEMA-declared flood zone, and also must have flood insurance in order to be eligible for the fortify roofing grant.

Republican Governor-elect Jeff Landry garnered more than fifty percent of the vote and avoided a runoff in a primary that had a turnout of only thirty-six percent. Landry thanked his supporters in Broussard Saturday night and said his victory is historic and symbolic.

Democrat Shawn Wilson was expected to be in a runoff with Landry but came in second with 26-percent of the vote against fourteen other candidates. Wilson said he congratulated Landry and asked him to keep his word that he would continue Medicaid expansion for more than half a million residents in the state and give teachers the pay raise they deserve.

Landry, who had the support of the state GOP for the past year, despite the fact that three other formidable Republicans remained in the race, says the journey to reform the state has only just begun.

Landry received 52-percent of the vote, Democrat Shawn Wilson 26-percent, and everyone else was in single digits. Cross says none of the other candidates made a persuasive case…

By winning the election now, it gives Landry an extra month to prepare to take over as Louisiana’s 57th governor. He will have more time to set up his administration, but Cross says he’s probably ready to move into the governor’s mansion today…

A Frustrating loss for the Saints yesterday as they wasted several chances and lost to the upstart Houston Texans 20-13. New Orleans outgained Houston 430-297, but the Black and Gold were 0 for 3 in the red zone. Coach Dennis Allen says red zone offense continues to be a problem, there were also a couple of missed field goals and a poor first half by the defense…

LSU put it all together on Saturday night as the Fighting Tigers trounced the Auburn Tigers 48-18 in Death Valley. Another big night for Jayden Daniels as he threw for 325 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 93 yards. LSU scored on eight of its ten possessions and Daniels was asked after the game if he gets mad when they don’t score…

Antoinette Frank was a New Orleans police officer when she killed fellow officer Ronald Williams, and two restaurant workers during a late night robbery in 1995. Officer Williams’s brother-in-law pleaded with the Louisiana Pardon Board not to grant clemency, saying his family has suffered enough.

A Friday night crash has left a man dead and a 9 year old girl injured after a car crashed into her bedroom. It happened last night just before 11. West Baton Rouge Sheriff’s officials say 43 year old Dedrick Manchester of New Roads was killed when he veered off the road, hit a gas main and crashed into the girl’s home. Officials say they the girl suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Natchitoches Police are still investigating the death of a Northwestern State Football Player. 21 year old Ronald Caldwell from Manor, Texas died early Thursday morning after being shot several times. No one has been charged in his death. But Natchitoches Police have arrested Caldwell’s roommate 27 year old John McIntosh, who’s charged with possession of a firearm in the presence of a controlled dangerous substance.

A plane crash in Patterson claimed 2 lives yesterday, St. Mary Parish coroner, Eric Melancon confirmed this morning. NTSB is expected to begin investigating the crash of a Cessna 414 that occurred around 3 PM Thursday. The plane crashed in a field in the vicinity of the Patterson Airport and sparks from the crash caused a wildfire in the field adjacent to the airport. Several fire departments from surrounding towns responded. The names of the victims have not be released.

Louisiana’s Steve Scalise had the public support of Louisiana U-S Representatives Julia Letlow and Clay Higgins in his bid for Speaker of the House. Higgins says he’s sad Scalise wouldn’t be the first House Speaker from Louisiana. But He now throws his support behind fellow House Freedom Caucus member Jim Jordan from Ohio…

The Louisiana Pardon Board denied clemency requests from five death row inmates Friday. The inmates were seeking to have their death sentence changed to life in prison. The cases were fast-tracked by Governor Edwards before he leaves office and there’s been a push for clemency hearings for all 56 death row inmates. Among the reviews denied Friday was from the state’s only female death row inmate and former New Orleans Police Officer Antoinette Frank.

Louisiana Congressman and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise’s attempt to be the next U-S House Speaker is over. Scalise did not have enough votes. In a press conference, Scalise says he will continue as the majority leader but there’s still work to be done.
