Cut 16 (21) “2022 season”

The Saints unveiled an alternate helmet that will be worn in the 2022 season, which is entirely black with a gold fleur de lis. The Black and Gold haven’t indicated which game or games the new helmet will be worn, but it’s expected to be paired with the color rush uniforms — which have been the most popular among fans in recent years.

Louisiana Tech Head Baseball Coach Lane Burroughs will remain the leader of the Bulldogs through at least the 2026-27 season under a contract extension approved by the Board of Supervisors Thursday. Rumors were swirling the national media earlier in the week suggesting Burroughs could leave for a different college, but he put those to rest with a tweet announcing he’s staying in Ruston.

LSU basketball will host Texas Tech in the annual SEC/Big 12 Challenge on January 28, 2023 at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. The SEC made that announcement on Thursday.

LSU defensive end Soni Fonua announced Thursday he’s entering the NCAA transfer portal. He recorded 6 1/2 tackles in 2021 and started the last 5 games of the season.

The Golden State Warriors and Steph Curry have done it once again as they prevail in the NBA championship over the Boston Celtics 103-90 in Game 6 to take the series 4-2.
This is the 4th title in eight seasons for the Warriors, the first team to do that since the Jordan-era Chicago Bulls.

The New Orleans Saints wrapped up minicamp today, working indoors to avoid the heat. Coach Dennis Allen says it was a productive week and now he’s looking forward to training camp.

The team will also debut a brand-new, alternative helmet for the 2022 season. In photos released today, defensive end Cam Jordan is seen modeling a black helmet with gold fleur-de-lis on both sides and a center stripe comprised of dozens of smaller fleur-de-lis. The Saints have not announced how many times or for which games they will wear the new lids. The last time the saints wore black helmets? The 1969 preseason, but those were scrapped because they weren’t cleared by the NFL.

Louisiana Tech announced today that Baseball Coach Lane Burroughs has signed a contract extension that will keep him in Ruston through the 2026-27 season. Burroughs has spent the last six seasons coaching the Bulldogs, leading them to their most successful run in program history with back-to-back NCAA regional appearances and 85 wins as well as Conference USA regular-season and tournament championships over the last two years.  Terms of the contract have not been announced as it awaits approval by the Board of Supervisors.

Six players from the USFL’s New Orleans Breakers have been named to the All-USFL team. Quarterback Kyle Sloter, the league’s leading passer, tight end Sal Cannella, center Jared Thomas, defensive end David Bellamy, linebacker Jerod Fernandez, and defensive tackle Reggie Howard were all chosen. The Breakers player their regular-season finale Sunday before opening the playoffs against Birmingham on June 25.

And tonight is Game 6 of the NBA Finals. The Boston Celtics are at home facing elimination, with the Warriors up in the series 3 games to 2.

With only three preseason games along with a revamped offensive lineup and philosophy, Jameis Winston would love to get as many reps as possible in game situations. However, just how many live snaps he takes is out of his hands, so Jameis is working on some other skills as well during minicamp.

Jarvis Landry continues to earn raves at Saints minicamp. Winston says that if there’s one thing he’s discovered about Landry, is that he knows how to get open.

Cut 19 (17) “…get the ball.”

The Saints have a quartet of players trying out during minicamp. Running back David Johnson, linebacker Joe Schobert, offensive lineman Senio Kelemete and kicker Alex Quevedo were all at practice on Tuesday. None have officially signed with the team. Schobert, a six-year veteran, has averaged more than 126 tackles per year over the past five seasons and could be the most intriguing invitee.

Tragic news out of Jacksonville, Florida as former Louisiana Ragin Cajun football player Brad McGuire died as a result of injuries sustained in a single-car accident Wednesday night. McGuire played multiple roles for the Cajuns from 2007-to 2011, including fullback, tight end, running back, and wide receiver, and received his degree in Biology in 2010. He was in Jacksonville to complete medical school.

LSU assistant baseball coach Dan Fitzgerald will be the next head coach at Kansas. Prior to spending last season with the Tigers, Fitzgerald was one of the top recruiters in the nation at Dallas Baptist University.

Sam Burns, a former LSU all-American, will make his fourth appearance in the U.S. Open starting today when the 122nd edition of the Grand Slam event takes place at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts. Burns tees off at 12:14 p.m. on No. 10 and the action can be seen on USA Network as well as NBC.

Game 6 of the NBA finals takes place tonight and the stakes are high for the Boston Celtics as they take on the Golden State Warriors. If Boston wins, they keep hopes alive and force a game 7. But if the Warriors win tonight, it’ll be their 4th ring in the past 8 years under coach Steve Kerr.

Pelicans forward Jaxson Hayes was sentenced to three years of probation, 450 hours of community service, and one year of weekly domestic violence classes after pleading no contest to misdemeanor charges of false imprisonment and resisting arrest during an incident at his Los Angeles home last summer.

Three-time All-SEC point guard Khayla Pointer has been signed by the Indiana Fever of the WNBA. Pointer was the first pick of the second round in this year’s draft out of LSU but was waived by the Las Vegas Aces on May 2. Pointer finished second in the SEC in both scoring and assists last season.

Since taking over as “Top Dog,” Burroughs has a 205-111 record, including 85-41 over the last two seasons. During that time, Tech has made two NCAA tournament appearances, hosted a regional, and won its first Conference USA tournament title.

LSU sophomore infielder Collier Cranford announced that he will enter the transfer portal. The Zachary High product started 24 games over three seasons, with a career .158 batting average.

The first-ever matchup on the football field between Southern University and LSU will be broadcast live on national television. The game, scheduled for Sept. 10 at 6:30 pm, will air on the SEC Network, according to a release from the Southern Athletic Department.

Running back Alvin Kamara was on the field Monday as the Saints opened minicamp. Though the two-time All-Pro has the cloud of a potential suspension over his head after an altercation at the Pro Bowl in February, Dennis Allen says he’s locked into the task at hand.

Leading the Saints on the field and in the locker room is Jameis Winston, now in year three with New Orleans.  Allen says the growth in Winston is noticeable.

Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas was on the field as the Black and Gold held a mandatory minicamp yesterday. Thomas watched from the sidelines as he continues to rehab from ankle surgery. Running back Alvin Kamara who has had a tumultuous offseason, was suited up and practicing with his teammates. Kamara has an August first court date on a battery charge for an incident that occurred in Las Vegas. Coach Dennis Allen says everyone, healthy or not, was in attendance and ready for work…

Saints kicker Will Lutz has been medically cleared to return after missing all of last season. Lutz had core muscle surgery before training camp last year and then complications developed. Allen says Saints defensive end Marcus Davenport continues to work back from shoulder and finger injuries.

Louisiana’s new Name, Image, and Likeness legislation has been signed into law. The legislation loosens restrictions as to who can help facilitate deals for student-athletes, correcting some of the mistakes Marrero Senator Patrick Connick says the legislature made when it created its initial NIL law. States got little guidance from the N-C-A-A in what would and would not be allowed. A year later, with more info at hand, it was time for tweaking.

Andrew Wiggins collected his second straight double-double with 26 points and 13 rebounds and Golden State won despite Steph Curry playing his first career playoff game without making a three-pointer, ending a streak of 132 postseason games with at least one three and 223 straight games overall. Jayson Tatum led the Celtics with 27 points and 10 boards in the loss. Game 6 is Wednesday night in Boston.

And Tulane catcher Bennett Lee, who batted a school-record .440 as a freshman, announced he will transfer to Wake Forest.

The eight-team College World Series field is set and half of the teams are from the SEC West. Auburn was the last the team to punch its ticket to the C-W-S as the 14th-seeded Tigers took down third-seeded Oregon State four to three last night. Auburn will play SEC rival Ole Miss on Saturday. Also on Saturday, Arkansas will face Standford. The Cardinal defeated UCONN 10 to 5 yesterday to lock up a trip to Omaha. The C-W-S gets underway Friday with Texas A-and-M taking on Oklahoma and Norte Dame facing Texas.

Golden State took three games to two lead in the NBA Finals. Steph Curry only scored 16 points and didn’t make a three-pointer, but Andrew Wiggins stepped up for the Warriors with 26 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Game six is in Boston on Thursday.

Barbe’s Gavin Guidry has been named the Class 5A Baseball Player of the Year. Guidry was 8-0 on the mound with a 0.16 ERA. West Monroe’s Wade Simoneaux was named Coach of the Year as he guided the Rebels to their first baseball title since 1999.
