The Department of Agriculture and Forestry says the former volunteer firefighter from Longville is getting five years at hard labor for setting wildfires on purpose in woods near the fire station where he worked. According to a release Brandon Lee Harris told investigators he committed the three arson blazes near the start of the year because of the excitement of fighting fires.

The National Hurricane Center has issued an update on the tropical disturbance forming in the Atlantic. They say Environmental conditions are expected to be conducive for development during the next day or so and a tropical depression could form while the system moves west north-westward. Meteorologist Danielle Manning says it’s still too early to tell where the system will end up…:

NOAA says an Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft is scheduled to investigate the system this afternoon if necessary.

Calcasieu Parish Authorities say a 60-year-old woman died in an apartment complex fire in Iowa Wednesday morning. They say no one else was injured in the blaze. Cause of the fire is under investigation but it’s thought to be electrical in nature.

Louisiana’s ACT scores were slightly down from last year. But State education officials say that more students are taking the college prep test now though which affects the average and more of them are scoring well enough to qualify for TOPS.

The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s office has released a picture of the vehicle that was involved in last weekend’s fatal shooting of a seven-year-old boy in Baton Rouge. Sheriff Sid Gautreaux says surveillance video from a nearby residence captured a light-colored, four-door sedan in the area when a shot was fired into another vehicle, killing little Terrez Coleman…:

Demitri Robinson, a tight end on LSU’s 2003 National Championship team, originally was asked to leave the establishment, so he walked outside…:

State Police are investigating a crash in Thibodaux this morning has claimed the life of one teenager, along with two others who were injured on Laural Valley Road just west of LA 308. In this case, 16 year-old Adrain Ledet, who was a passenger in a Toyota Tundra, died at the scene. He was not a wearing a seat belt.

Shreveport Police detectives are investigating a shooting at Shreveport Regional Airport late last night. The initial investigation showed that this was based on a disput between a cab driver and a security officer. No one was injured.

This lawsuit was filed by teachers and parents who claim Governor Jindal overstepped his Constitutional authority when he halted the implementation of Common Core. An attorney for the plaintiffs, Stephen Kupperman, says they’re obviously pleased with the ruling…

The governor’s office says they will appeal the ruling.

Shreveport Police are investigating a shooting involving a security officer at the Shreveport Regional Airport. Authorities believe there was some kind of dispute between the officer and a cab driver. As the cab driver tried to leave, the security officer fired his weapon striking a tire on the vehicle. The cab driver is not being charged at this time. The security officer is on administrative leave while the investigation continues.

Qualifying is underway for November’s congressional elections. The sixth district features former Governor Edwin Edwards vying for the seat against a host of Republican candidates. In the fifth district, incumbent Vance McAllister faces some stiff competition for re-election. LSU Political Science Professor Robert Hogan says there is one key issue for both of these races…
