The Council for A Better Louisiana (CABL) has canceled its scheduled October 20^th U.S. Senate debate, which would have pitted incumbent Republican Senator John Kennedy against Democrat challengers Luke Mixon and Gary Chambers. CABL President Barry Erwin says Kennedy’s campaign will not commit to a specific date, because his schedule is uncertain. Erwin feels it’s important for candidates to take part in televised forums…:

Erwin says CABL provided the candidates with the debate date and time many weeks ago, so the news from the Kennedy camp is a disappointment. He says it’s hard to have an election debate with no incumbent. Erwin says there may yet be some hope the candidates will square off before the November 8^th election…:

Erwin says a live televised debate gives voters a better idea at who the candidates really are, because they are un-rehearsed and spontaneous. He says more and more political candidates are becoming reluctant to take part…:

Emergency Preparedness Director with DCFS Ricky Montet (Mon-tay) says three staff members are in Tallahassee and from there they will be deployed to assist with shelters in Florida.

Montet says it’s not the first time a shelter task force has aided in Florida, they were in Florida in 2018 for Hurricane Michael. The initial request is for two weeks and it’s part of the Emergency Management Assistance Compact or EMAC.

The DCFS shelter task force has played a critical role in every natural disaster in Louisiana since the 2016 floods.

Wallis says because Louisiana has requested assistance from other states in the past, especially after the last two hurricane seasons and the 2016 flood it was time to return the favor.

Wallis says depending on Florida’s needs post-Ian more personnel and equipment could be deployed.

LSU sets a new record in academic quality for its most accomplished freshman class in the university’s history. Assistant Vice President and Director of Administration Daniel Barrow says the class has an all-time high median GPA of 3.78 and an ACT composite of 25.5.

The freshman class is made up of 68 percent Louisiana residents and 32 percent from out of state and one-third of the freshman class are first-generation college students.

Barrow says as a member of the SEC and other research powerhouses across the nation, it has elevated LSU’s preeminence.

In addition to breaking academic quality, Barrow says this year’s freshman class enrollment of 7,367 surpasses last year’s record enrollment of 7,038.

A Baton Rouge pediatric cardiologist is under arrest for possessing child pornography and video voyeurism. Our Lady of the Lake hospital says they have fired 37-year-old Dr. Antonio Belda, and that – so far as they know – none of his patients were among his victims.

Three men have been arrested, accused of spilling around 20-thousand gallons of oil from an Entergy substation in Chalmette. According to Entergy, valves to two large oil-filled transformers were intentionally removed.  The three men alleged responsible have been identified, arrested and charged with damage to a critical infrastructure and simple burglary.
