The Revenue Estimating Conference forecasted the state will have a surplus of $935 million in this year’s state budget. And because it’s not guaranteed to have the same amount of surplus of funds in the future Jan Moeller with the Louisiana Budget Project says the state usually allocates these funds towards nonrecurring expenses.

LSU Ag Center experts say the recent freezes were disruptive to the sugar cane industry. Sugar cane specialist Kenneth Gravois says 90 percent of the new crop is already in the fields and experts just tested soil temperatures to assess the health of that crop.

Of the harvested crops he says the quality of the sugar being processed is still very good.

He said he was staying…but he’s not. LSU wide receiver Kayshon Boutte was listed yesterday as “unavailable” to play in the Citrus Bowl Monday, and head coach Brian Kelly quickly said he IS enrolled for the spring semester. However, yesterday Boutte tweeted he WILL declare for the NFL draft, and will not be back next season.

The Mayor may not like the moniker “Murder Capital of the USA”, but nevertheless New Orleans is on track to have the nation’s highest per-capita murder rate for 2022. The Crescent City is set to pass up the record of 70 homicides per 100-thousand people for the first time in 11 years. Experts say teaching conflict resolution as opposed to violence is key to reducing the murder rate. Meanwhile the city has seen 5 homicides since last Saturday.

LSU Ag Center experts say the recent freezes were disruptive to the sugar cane industry. Sugar cane specialist Kenneth Gravois says the crops now being harvested experienced what he calls a killing freeze…:

However, ten of the eleven sugar cane mills in Louisiana are still processing cane, and 85 percent of the cane in the fields has already been harvested. Gravois adds that, despite the freeze, the quality of the sugar being processed is still very good.

Experts say tests of Shreveport wastewater show another COVID surge is likely. Dr. Krista Queen is with LSU Health in Shreveport. She says there was a similar increase of the virus in wastewater this time last year, due to holiday gathering probably…:

Police in Natchitoches arrest two people in connection with the Christmas day death of a 1-year-old child. Officers responded to a medical emergency Sunday afternoon to find the baby unresponsive. Efforts to revive the child proved unsuccessful. Police arrested the parents, 27-year-old Damian Jewett and 23-year-old Jocelyn Crenshaw, for negligent homicide, the investigation is still underway.

A tax reform package passed by lawmakers in 2021 reduces the state’s corporate franchise tax; a tax paid on companies’ capital. Tax attorney and consultant Jason Decuir says this is a first step in eventually getting rid of corporate franchise taxes altogether…:

Police in New Orleans say a man shot and killed another man yesterday afternoon in the busy French Quarter. The shooting took place at Bourbon & Toulouse Streets and was the result of an argument between two men. The victim died after being taken to the hospital. The shooter has been arrested.

The Division of Administration has blocked TikTok traffic on networks managed by the state Office of Tech Services. A company owned by Entergy has been ordered to pay about $160-million to Louisiana customers they overcharged. System Energy Resources Inc, was ordered to repay customers by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

State Police say speeding was the likely cause of a double fatal crash Tuesday near Golden Meadow, but they haven’t ruled out impairment. Trooper Ross Brennan says a man driving a pickup was going too fast, when he sideswiped a dump truck, then crashed head-on into am sedan. The sedan driver died at the scene. The pickup driver died later at a hospital. Brennan says holidays always mean increases in traffic deaths…:

The man who lit a fire inside the Walmart in Hammond on Christmas Eve has been caught. State Fire Marshal’s spokesperson Ashley Rodrigue says when 43-year-old Terrence Coe saw his picture all over TV and social media, he turned himself in. Another shooting on Bourbon Street, in the New Orleans French Quarter. NOPD says a man was shot and wounded today just before 2pm at Bourbon and Toulouse. He is expected to be OK. Cops are following leads and interviewing possible witnesses.

No Mega Million jackpot winner last night. That means the jackpot for Friday’s drawing will be worth about $640-million to a single winner. A lump-sum cash award would be about $302-million.
