23-year-old Kayley Thibeaux of Carencro has been charged with vehicular homicide as Lafayette Police suspect she was drunk when she drove her vehicle into a parked car, which started a chain reaction involving other parked cars, pinning 40-year-old Jermaine Britton of Breaux Bridge between vehicles. Britton died from his injuries.

Governor Jeff Landry has announced the state will not accept federal dollars that can be used to supply free breakfasts and lunches to thousands of kids when they are out of school for the summer. The governor’s office says the Summer EBT program is a pandemic era related program that costs the state seven million dollars. A Landry spokesperson says the pandemic is over and there are other social safety net programs available. New Orleans Democrat Representative Matthew Willard is disappointed with the governor’s decision…

Holly has been suspended from the LSU football team indefinitely and an attorney for the 19-year-old says Holly emphatically denies all charges.

The Saints are reportedly planning to hold training camp at the University of California-Irvine in suburban Los Angeles. New Orleans has been holding camp and it’s Metairie training complex since 2017, but construction on the cafeteria will force the team to move the camp elsewhere.

In college basketball last night…Louisiana Tech snapped a two-game losing streak with a 63-58 win over Jacksonville State. Daniel Batcho did not play and Terri Miller started in his place and scored 17 points.

ULM defeated Southern Miss 68-59, handing the Golden Eagles their first home loss of the season. The Ragin Cajuns won their fourth straight game on the road as U-L Lafayette defeated Old Dominion 68-60.

The college baseball season gets underway today and last year’s champions, the LSU Tigers will face VMI at 2 PM today. Coach Jay Johnson says his team is not defending anything, they are attacking a new opportunity. Catcher Alex Milazzo says the players have bought into that philosophy

Today is the first Friday of the Lenten season, a day where many Catholics and others go searching for crawfish. LSU Ag Center Crawfish Specialist Mark Shirley says the supply has picked up a little bit, but production is still way off from previous years. LSU running back Trey Holly has been arrested on an attempted second-degree murder charge for a shooting that injured two people in Farmerville last Friday night. Union Parish Sheriff Dusty Gates says an argument between two groups of individuals resulted in multiple people firing weapons.

Gates says a man and woman were shot and the female remains in stable condition at a Shreveport hospital, while the male was released. Deputies have also arrested two others, 18-year-old Jordan Jones and 17-year-old. They have also been charged with attempted second-degree murder.

LSU says Holly has been suspended indefinitely from all team activities.

Holly is Louisiana’s all-time leading rusher in high school football history with 10,523 yards in five years. He signed with the Tigers in 2023 and as a freshman 11 times for 110 yards and one touchdown.

Holly’s suspension leaves the Tigers with just three scholarship running backs on the roster, Josh Williams, Kaleb Jackson and incoming freshman Caden Durham from Duncanville High School in Texas.

Gas prices are on the increase with the statewide average price for a gallon of regular gas in Louisiana at $2.89, that’s up seventeen cents from a month ago. GasBuddy Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan it’s not surprising for this time of year.

When you compare prices from a year ago, the average today is down seventeen cents from 2023.

DeHaan expects gas prices to continue to go up now that we’re reaching the typical time of year when demand goes up along with the temperatures…

As for the immediate forecast on gas prices, DeHaan predicts they will continue to increase as refineries make the switch to summer gas and demand increases. He says typically we see prices go up in February and the trend continues into late spring.

Oil prices he says are not impacting the increase in gas prices as they continue to average around $76 a barrel. He says world events also do not appear to be related to the increase in gas prices, he says it’s merely seasonality.

The Louisiana Department of Education is launching, Let Teachers Teach, a teacher’s workgroup to develop possible solutions to classroom disruptions. State Superintendent Cade Brumley says teachers feel a number of distractions are taking time away from classroom instruction.

Brumley says the workgroup will include pre-K to 12th grade teachers.  He says there’s nothing more critical to student success than an effective teacher.

Brumley says LDOE is working with teacher committees and organizations to identify teachers for the workgroup. And he believes current Louisiana Teacher of the Year Kylie Altier…

Local lawmakers are calling for St. Tammany coroner-elect Dr. Christopher Tape not to take office, after a WWL-TV investigation found Tape was arrested on child sexual assault charges in New Mexico in 2001. The charges were dropped because he didn’t receive a speedy trial but Franklinton Senator Beth Mizell says Tape was never proven innocent either…

Tape told WWL-TV his experience of being accused of child sexual assault makes him a good person to lead the sexual assault response team because he knows what a false accusation is like.

Tape ran unopposed and was officially elected in October. Mizell says if Tape does not resign, the Northshore delegation would support a recall petition to keep him from taking office next month.

According to WWL-TV court records show Tape admitted to Albuquerque police in 2001 that he spanked and then rubbed the bare bottom of his girlfriend’s seven-year-old daughter. Tape told investigators he was disciplining the child and denied molesting her.

Tape reportedly has only been living in St. Tammany Parish for about a year and Mizell says she and other lawmakers were caught completely off-guard with news of his previous charges.

WWL-TV quoted recent court records in Lafayette Parish where Tape paid an undisclosed amount in a 2022 civil settlement  young woman who worked for him at the private autopsy firm he ran there after she accused him of unwanted advances.
