In high school football last night; Ouachita Christian edged Sterlington 21-19, St. Louis Catholic downed South Beauregard 30-6, St. Martinville defeated Breaux Bridge 13-6 in overtime, and New Iberia Catholic beat Loreauville 41-14. Tonight’s big games are Neville at Bastrop, while Ascension Epsicopal hosts Vermilion Catholic.

And the Louisiana High School Athletic Association is investigating a fight that erupted in the third quarter of the Karr versus Lake Area contest. The brawl ended the game with Karr leading 47-7.

State Police say three people were killed in Terrebonne Parish today as a result of a natural gas explosion and fire at Williams Partners’ natural gas facility in Gibson. A cause of the explosion is not known. Company officials say the workers were performing maintenance on the facility which was not operational at the time of the explosion.

Louisiana lost a cooking icon today as internationally known chef Paul Prudhomme passed away at the age of 75. Wendy Waren of the Louisiana Restaurant Association says this is a tremendous loss for their industry…

State Police report three people were killed and two others seriously injured as a result of a natural gas explosion in Terrebonne Parish. It happened in the town of Gibson around 11 o’ clock this morning at a facility owned by the Transcontinental Gas Pipeline Company, a subsidiary of Williams Partners, which is a natural gas supplier.

The Rapides Parish Sheriff’s office is mourning the death of one of its deputies, who was killed in an off-duty crash involving a vehicle that was driven by a juvenile. 32-year-old Troy Verheyden was killed when a car driven by a 16 year old ran a stop sign. LSU is taking steps to welcome the Gamecocks to Baton Rouge, since technically, this will be a home game for U-S-C. The Golden Band from Tigerland is learning some of South Carolina’s songs and LSU will wear purple jerseys. The Tigers traditionally wear white for home games. With the unexpected change of venue to Baton Rouge for the LSU-South Carolina game the Capital City is getting a little extra tourism. President of Visit Baton Rouge Paul Arrigo says they’re excited to welcome the fans from all over and hope everyone has enough time to make plans and attend the game.

U-L Lafayette industrial design graduate student Kate Brown decided to take an alternative route for her senior thesis project. Brown entered the Innovations in Life Jacket Design Competition where she designed a comfortable and form fitting life preserver, made especially for women. She says growing up on the water in Basile, she found regular life jackets didn’t let her move comfortably.

Brown says her live jacket is different from traditional vests because it’s specially designed to fit a more feminine body form. She says the Comfort Flex Life Vest has a relief cut under the arms so it won’t ride up over your shoulders while in the water.

 Brown came in third place and won two-thousand dollars in the competition. She says she’s now working to get a patent and wants to ensure the life vest meets Coast Guard approval.

LSU football season ticket holders have until 5 PM Thursday night to purchase tickets for Saturday’s game against South Carolina in Tiger Stadium. At six PM Thursday, tickets will be available to the general public. LSU Athletics Director Joe Alleva says since they only had a short time to prepare for Saturday’s game, lines at concession stands could be longer than usual

This Saturday’s LSU-South Carolina game has been re-located from Columbia, South Carolina to Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge. It will start at 2:30 PM. The catastrophic flooding in Columbia forced South Carolina officials to move the contest and LSU is glad to host the contest, giving the Tigers five home games in the SEC.

In 2005, LSU had to move one of its scheduled home game against Arizona State to Tempe, Arizona because of Hurricane Katrina. So LSU Coach Les Miles understands what Coach Steve Spurrier and the Gamcocks are going through. LSU won that game in 2005 and Miles credits the players…

Saints quarterback Drew Brees said he told Coach Sean Payton to take him off the injury report. Brees says his shoulder is fine and he’ll be more than ready for this Sunday’s game at Philadelphia. Meanwhile, the Saints have signed punter Brandon Fields, because of an injury to regular punter Thomas Morestead.

In the major league baseball playoffs…former LSU pitcher Will Harris pitched a perfect eighth inning to help the Houston Astros blank the Yankees three to nothing. The Astros advance to play Kansas City in a best of five division series.

In basketball…LSU freshman Ben Simmons is on C-B-S Sports -dot-com preseason All-America team.

And Louisiana Tech has been picked to finish fifth in the 14-team Conference USA. That’s according to a vote by the league’s coaches. Guard Alex Hamilton and forward Erik McCree were selected to the preseason all-conference team.

The state department of corrections says the that prisoner who was accidentally released from prison is back in Louisiana. Spokesperson Pam LaBorde says 32-year-old Benjuiel Johnson is at Angola. Johnson, who was convicted on manslaughter, was released as a result of an error by department of corrections worker. Johnson was found last Friday at a motel in an Atlanta suburb.
