Governor John Bel Edwards said on his monthly call-in radio show this afternoon that he will not rescind his order that requires most state contracts to include language that would protect LGBT citizens from workplace discrimination. Edwards lost a court case this week against Attorney General Jeff Landry on this issue.

Louisiana Tech will be at Florida International this Saturday. F-I-U is a perfect 3-and-0 in league games as they have defeated F-A-U, UTEP and Charlottte. The Panthers started the year 0-4, but ever since Ron Cooper took over as interim coach, they’ve won three in a row. Kick-off is Miami is at 6 PM.

Saints kicker Wil Lutz has been named NFC Special Teams player of the week. He kicked the 52-yard field goal that gave New Orleans a 41-38 win over Carolina. Coach Sean Payton says rookie wide receiver Jake Lampman received a game ball for his efforts on special teams as he had three tackles against the Panthers after being elevated from the practice squad.

There are reports that Pelicans star Anthony Davis could play in next week’s season opener after suffering a sprained ankle last week. It’s likely Davis could test his sore ankle in Thursday night’s preseason finale against the Orlando Magic. Sources say Davis practiced yesterday with no issues.

In a vote by the media, the LSU men’s basketball team has been picked to finish 12th in the 14-team SEC. Antonio Blakeney was an All-SEC second-team preseason selection.

The Sun Belt Coaches poll has UL Lafayette finishing seventh in the 12-team league and ULM coming in eighth place. UT Arlington heads into the year as a preseason favorite.

Jefferson Parish President Mike Yenni addressed the parish council today for the first time since his sexting scandal made headlines. Yenni says he has learned to not run from your troubles when you can rise from them instead. He says over the past few weeks, he has walked the deepest valley of despair.

The Jefferson Parish Council has called for Yenni’s resignation and gave him a vote of no confidence. But the embattled politician says it is his job to move the parish forward and asks that the council let him do his job. He says he has never taken his oath to the parish or the people lightly.

Jefferson Parish residents responded to Yenni following his refusal to resign from office. Gregory Carroll with Citizens for a Better Kenner says he’s concerned that city equipment was used to have those conversations with a 17-year-old, and that he offered that boy a job.

A recall petition has been started to remove Yenni from office. Carroll adds that nearly 80-percent of the registered voters in the parish want Yenni to resign.

LSU Coach Ed Orgeron says running back Leonard Fournette will be on a pitch count this Saturday against Ole Miss. Fournette has missed the last two games with an ankle injury, but Coach O’ says he’s moving at full speed in practice.

Southeastern Louisiana Coach Ron Roberts says quarterback Justin Alo will not play this Saturday against Houston Baptist, because of a shoulder injury.

Saints first round draft pick Sheldon Rankins has healed up from his broken leg during training camp and returns to the practice field today. Rankins was initially placed on injured reserve and according to NFL rules he’ll be eligible to play week 9 at San Francisco. Rankins should be able to help a defense that ranks 31st in the league.

Also, kicker Will Lutz has been named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week. Lutz made a 52-yard field goal that gave New Orleans a victory over Carolina last week.

This past Sunday night’s matchup between Houston and Indianapolis was the lowest rated Sunday night football game since 2011. Viewership for NBC’s prime-time games have been down 17 percent from last year.

The expectations are not that high for the LSU men’s basketball team. Members of the media have picked the LSU Tigers to finish 12th in the 14th team SEC. Sophomore guard Antonio Blakeney is a preseason second team All-SEC selection.

In the Sun Belt Conference, UL Lafayette has been picked to finish seventh in the 12 team league in a preseason coaches poll. ULM has been picked to finish eighth.

Upset parents say their kids were in their underwear while school officials looked for the money. It appears the parents of students at Caldwell High were telling the truth when they claimed their children were stripped searched. Orgeron and Freeze know each other well. When Coach O’ was the head coach at Ole Miss, he hired Freeze as an off-the-field administrator. Looking back at it, Orgeron says he should have promoted Freeze to offensive coordinator.

A 14-year-old who has a chronic liver disease and is waiting for a new liver has been named a honorary member of the Saints. Jarrius Robertson has become close to Head Coach Sean Payton and the players since they visited him last December at a hospital in New Orleans. Robertson is often at games and practices and has become a social media sensation. He’ll be with the team this Sunday in Kansas City.

McNeese State Head Coach Lance Guidry has left the Cowboys football program as his family grieves the loss of his brother and his grandfather, who died just two days a part. Guidry’s brother died Saturday morning before the Cowboys 35-0 loss to Central Arkansas. Lark Hebert will serve as acting head coach and says there’s it’s unknown if Coach Guidry will be back with the team before they play Northwestern State this Saturday.

Denham Springs Representative Valarie Hodges says she authored the legislation to prevent marriage fraud, but an attorney for Victor Vo, Marley Ann Brumme, says Hodges law oversteps the state’s authority…

Attorney General Jeff Landry is pleased a Baton Rouge judge has ruled in his favor in a lawsuit filed against him by Governor John Bel Edwards. A judge says Landry does NOT have to sign off on state contracts that contain language to protect against LGBT discrimination in the workplace. Landry says the question of the power of the attorney general has been resolved but…

In April, Governor Edwards issued an executive order that prohibited discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity to be included in most state contracts. Landry has since blocked dozens of state contracts, because he says the state legislature on many occasions has refused to protect LGBT individuals from discrimination in state law.

Governor Edwards’ spokesperson Richard Carbo says the governor is reviewing his legal option, but says ruling does not impact the merits of the executive order. But Landry is still concerned the executive order is too overreaching.

A Louisiana man is suing over a state law that requires couples seeking marriage licenses to present a birth certificate, which can pose a problem for those born outside the US. 31-year-old Victor Vo of Lafayette has lived in this country since he was 3 months old and became a U.S. citizen when he was eight and recently had his marriage license application rejected by a court clerk. Attorney Marley Ann Brumme is representing Vo and says the law is unconstitutional and discriminatory.

Denham Springs Representative Valarie Hodges wrote the 2015 law in question. She says it’s an effort to prevent marriage fraud. But Brumme says the law is overstepping the state’s authority.

Hodges says no law is perfectly written, and she is committed to tweaking the language if necessary. But managing director of the New Orleans Workers Center for Racial Justice, Audrey Stewart, says Louisiana has a long history of discriminating against immigrants.

Hodges says she is working with Attorney General Jeff Landry to ensure that those who are in this country legally are encouraged and able to get married in Louisiana, whether they are native born or legal immigrants.

In the race for the 3rd Congressional District, it appears as though it’s GOP Public Service Commissioner Scott Angelle’s race to lose, as he’s raised more than rest of the field combined. UL-Lafayette Political Science Professor Pearson Cross says this goes along with how the race has been from the very beginning…:

Third Quarter Federal Elections Commission records show Angelle has over $1 million dollars in receipts through the third quarter, followed by little known Gus Rantz with more $620,000. Cross says Clay Higgins, a former police captain with the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office, is arguably the second best-known candidate in the race….:
