A meeting to discuss the future of the Confederate momunment that stands in front of the Caddo Parish courthouse ended abruptly last night. The Caddo Commission Monument Advisory adjourned quickly after starting, because one member wasn’t there. Chairman RJ Johnson is surprised the meeting was postponed.
The head of Louisiana’s Office of Community Development, Pat Forbes, says they are ramping up on spending the federal grant money designed to help flood victims get back in their homes. Forbes says one of the complaints they’ve heard is that there’s not enough money, but he says they actually have enough to help out a whole bunch of folks….

The Humane Society of Louisiana says a Denham Springs couple found a cat that had a gunshot wound to the face. Executive Director Jeff Dorson says they are working with law enforcement to determine who shot the cat. He says the cat will undergo reconstruction and extraction surgery…

As we approach the one-year anniversary of the deadly August south Louisiana flood, the head of Louisiana’s Office of Community Development, Pat Forbes, says they are ramping up on spending the federal grant money designed to help flood victims get back in their homes. The Tax Foundation has updated its national review of sales tax rates and  Louisiana continues to rank number one with a combined state and local sales tax rate averaging just above 10-percent. Director of state projects for the Tax Foundation, Scott Drenkard, says Louisiana has one of the highest local sales tax rates in the nation….

The other states in the top five are Alabama, Washington, Arkansas and Tennessee is ranked number two behind Louisiana. He says the Bayou State has high sales taxes, because its property taxes are lower than most states thanks to the Homestead Exemption

A Denham Springs couple has discovered a cat suffering from a gunshot wound to the face when the feline walked up to the front door of their home. The Humane Society of Louisiana Executive Director Jeff Dorson says the cat has received medical attention and is getting the care he needs…

A second person has been arrested in a shooting in Evangeline Parish that injured a deputy and resulted in the death of a burglary suspect. Trooper Scott Moreau says the deputy is in stable condition…

Moreau says 27-year-old Dejuan Guillory of Mamou was fatally shot and 21-year-old Dequince Brown of Chruch Point was charged with attempted first degree murder of a police officer. Authorities say Brown was with Guillory during the incident.

MedStar Washington Hospital Center says Congressman Steve Scalise underwent surgery today for the management of infection. The hospital says Scalise tolerated the procedure well and he remains in serious condition. Scalise has been hospitalized since suffering a gunshot wound on June 14th.

A two-year-old Lockport boy is another child who has died in a rash of drownings around Louisiana. Lt. Brennan Matherne with the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office says on July 4th deputies responded to a call of a child found unresponsive in the bottom of a pool. He says the family of little Kevin Cortez III was visiting the home..:

LSU has received bad news on right-handed pitcher Eric Walker. The promising hurler will miss the 2018 season as he’ll need Tommy John Surgery to repair a torn ligament in his throwing elbow.

Walker first complained of discomfort in his forearm before the College World Series. He tried to pitch in a game in Omaha, but left in the third inning, because he felt the pain reach his elbow. Tiger Rag Associate Editor James Moran says this surgery was inevitable, regardless if Walker pitched during the College World Series….

Because of Walker’s injury and Jared Poche and Alex Lange moving on to professional baseball, the Tigers will have three new weekend starters. Moran says Zack Hess, Caleb Gilbert, Todd Peterson and incoming freshman Nick Storz are the most likely candidates.

Michael Federico was introduced as ULM’s new head baseball coach today. The former assistant at Southern Miss will have the difficult task of building a program that won just 12 games last season. Former Warhawk Matt Collins is joining his staff. He was the hitting coach at Stephen F Austin for the last three years and they were a very good hitting team last year. Collins played at ULM from 2008 to 2009 and hit .344 during his career.

And there are reports that Christian Ostrander is leaving Louisiana Tech to replace Federico as Southern Miss’ pitching coach.

You can add another layer to the fuming rivalry between LSU and Florida on the gridiron. The Gators have announced their homecoming game will be the LSU game on October 6th.

Many running back AJ Carter can’t make his mind on where he wants to play football in college. He originally committed to UCLA, then switched his commitment to LSU and now he’s switched back to UCLA.

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s office announces an arrest in the death of a nine-month-old infant. 28-year-old Benjamin Joseph Carter Senior of Hammond has been charged with second-degree murder. An autopsy shows the toddler died from blunt force trauma.

Education leaders are letting teachers and students know what policy changes can be expected when they head back to class in August. Debbie Meaux, Louisiana Association of Educators President, says a new law was recently signed by the governor that would limit testing time, to 2% of a student’s learning time…:

Meaux also says that teachers and administrators will be engaging with a new accountability system. She says in addition to grading schools based on how students do on tests, there will also be a new element that looks at how kids’ are growing and improving..:

An Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Deputy has been injured and a man is dead after an officer involved shooting in Mamou. State Police Trooper Scott Moreau says the deputy responded to a call of an attempted burglary after 4 o’clock this morning. He says the officer confronted 27-year-old Dejuan Guillory and an altercation occurred between the two.

It’s not clear how the officer was injured. Moreau says the investigation is ongoing and the deputy is in stable condition.

LSU Baseball Coach Paul Mainieri announced today that pitcher Eric Walker will undergo surgery for a tear in the ulnar collateral ligament of his right elbow, causing him to miss the 2018 season. Tiger Rag Associate Editor James Moran says this is bad news for the Tigers as they expected him to be the starting Friday night pitcher.

The surgery is known as the Tommy John surgery where the ligament is replaced by a tendon from somewhere else in the body. Moran says Walker’s injury means there will e three new weekend starters for the 2018 season.

ULM introduced Mike Federico as its new baseball coach today. He takes over a program that went 12-43 in 2017.

Joining Tigers Coach Ed Orgeron at next week’s SEC media days will be junior tailback Derrius Guice, receiver DJ Clark and senior defensive tackle Christian LaCouture. The conferences 14 teams are each represented by three players and the coach over the four day media blitz in Birmingham. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey kicks off media days Monday morning by speaking to hundreds of reporters. LSU’s delegation meets the press that afternoon.

Florida has announced that its homecoming game this season will be the LSU game. That will take place on October 7th. It will be the first of back-to-back trips to Gainesville in consecutive years, because of last year’s scheduling switcheroo because of Hurricane Matthew.

U.S. Majority Whip Steve Scalise from Jefferson Parish is back in the ICU and listed in serious condition at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. His doctors have new concerns over infection after undergoing several surgeries for a gunshot wound.

On the one year anniversary of the shooting death of Alton Sterling, seven people were arrested during a protest at Baton Rouge Police Headquarters. Sgt. L’Jean McKneely says four men and three women  members of the New Black Panther Party tried to push through a barricade. He says one officer was hurt.

McKneely says one female protester injured her knee and received medical treatment. He says the seven individuals arrested were booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.

It looks as there is a mayoral shift moving through the state as five of Louisiana’s biggest cities have experienced a change in power over the last two years. That’s according to, Jeremy Alford of LaPolitics.com, who says right now it’s difficult to tell if there are ties that bind but….

Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Lake Charles, Shreveport and soon to be New Orleans have recently seen a change. Alford says the most interesting thing about these elections is only one candidate was able to flip a seat, Republican Nic Hunter replaced Democrat Randy Roach in Lake Charles. He says New Orleans residents will select a new mayor in the fall.

A two-year-old boy is now the fourth child to die in a rash of drownings in Tangipahoa Parish. The state Department of Children and Family Services is advising parents of water safety during the summer months. Mona Michelli with the DCFS Division of Child Welfare says this is a time to be vigilant.

Louisiana had the second highest rate of drownings in the nation from 2013 to 2015 with 71 children dying, according to the state Health Department. Michelli says teach children to swim with a partner, never alone. She also adds, keep toys out of the pool area when not in use.

Michelli says pool owners should install a fence with a locked gate around a pool that is beyond a child’s reach. She also adds it’s smart for parents to learn CPR in the event of an emergency and know the signs of drowning.
