East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore says Gavin Eugene Long came to Baton Rouge last summer to inflict pain on police officers. Moore released many more details on last July’s attack on law enforcement where Long killed three officers. The D-A says the officers who killed Long were completely justified and he was ready to die that day too based on his suicide note….

Secretary of State Tom Schedler has yet to decide if they’ll provide voter identification information to a commission set by President Donald Trump investigating voter fraud. The panel is seeking names, birth dates, addresses and partial Social Security numbers. The President tweeted a number of states are refusing to give this information and he asks what are they trying to hide.

The Pelicans have reportedly signed their starting point guard Jrue Holiday to a five-year, 120 million dollar deal. The contract also includes incentive clauses that could pay Holiday up to 150-million dollars and the agreement also contains a player option for a fifth year. Signing the 27-year-old is the Pelicans top priority this offseason after he averaged 15 points and seven assists last year.

But the Western Conference continues to get tougher. As Oklahoma City traded for Paul George to give MVP Russell Westbrook a star player to work with.

First year LSU head basketball coach Will Wade has received a major commitment from the state’s top basketball player. Javonte Smart of Scotlandville High in Baton Rouge has given a verbal pledge to the Tigers. He’s six-foot-four and has already been named Mr. Basketball for the state two times. Kansas, Kentucky, and UCLA were also very interested in Smart.

LSU finished the 2017 season as the consensus number two team in the country in college baseball. So how do the Tigers look heading into the 2018 season? They lose their top two starters in Alex Lange and Jared Poche, but they return a good nucleus of position players, Antoine Duplantis, Zach Watson, Josh Smith and Jake Slaugther. Doolittle is a catcher from Jupiter, Florida, while Storz is from Brooklyn. He’s 6-foot-6 and can play in the outfield as well. The Detroit Tigers selected him in the 31st round, but he’s expected to play at LSU next year.

LSU signee and West Monroe star Jacob Pearson has officially signed with the Los Angeles Angels. He was chosen 85th overall by the Angels in last month’s MLB draft.

The NBA Free Agency period begins tonight at 12:01 and New Orleans is expected to lock-up point guard Jrue Holiday to a five year max contract, before he’s able to talk with other teams. Holiday averaged 15 points, seven assists and four rebounds in 67 games last season. Head Coach Alvin Gentry has said that re-signing Holiday was the franchise’s top priority this offseason.

Former Louisiana Tech star Paul Millsap is a free-agent as well and a number of teams are interested in the 32-year-old. Millsap will reportedly meet with the Phoenix Suns, who according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, can give Millsap a max contract for possibly the next three years.

New LSU men’s basketball coach Will Wade landed a major verbal commitment today as five-star point guard Javonte Smart of Scotlandville High gave his verbal pledge to the Tigers. He’s ranked by ESPN as the fifth best point guard in the Class of 2018.

Baseball America does not project the LSU Tigers will return to Omaha next year and compete in the College World Series. The Tigers are losing a lot from the 2017 national runner-up squad. Moore says Long died from 45 bullet wounds, but not before he killed three officers and injured three others. The D-A says the tactical officers who killed Long were completely justified and he was ready to die that day too based on his suicide note….

Authorities in New Orleans said today that the two adults in Wednesday’s fatal police chase had warrants out for their arrest. A two-year-old child was killed in the crash.

Long said in his suicide note that many will be surprised by what he’s done, but something had to be done to punish “bad cops.” Long’s attack on the officers came less than two weeks after a white police officer fatally shot a black man in Baton Rouge. The amoeba causes an infection that leads to the destruction of brain tissue. Louisiana has had three deaths from this amoeba that came from drinking water. Guidry says they know at this time of year they have to be diligent about looking for it and addressing it because it thrives in warm water.

These two systems also had the amoebas in 2015. Guidry says the Department of Health is asking the two systems to treat the water with more chlorine to get rid of the amoebas.

Lots of people will be celebrating Independence Day, and law enforcement will be out to make sure they do so safely with its “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign. Trooper Jesse LaGrange with State Police says officers will be on patrol looking for impaired drivers, with saturated patrols and DWI checkpoints.

State Police reports five families in our state lost loved ones in crashes during the 2016 July Fourth weekend. LaGrange encourages everyone to designate a sober driver if they plan to drink. He says it’s important to know how you’re getting home before you start drinking.

Staying sober protects not only other drivers, but law enforcement as well. Last Fourth of July weekend, Sterlington Police Officer David Elahi was killed when he was struck by a drunk driver while assisting someone on the side of the road.

The state Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control suspends the license of Reggie’s Bar near the LSU campus following a sting operation by Baton Rouge Police. Sgt. L’Jean McKneely says officers patrolled Tigerland after learning fights were taking place in the parking lot.

McKneely says officers made 37 arrests during the Monday night raid.

Plastipak Packaging announces its adding production lines at its manufacturing facility in Pineville. Plastipak makes plastic containers for food, beverage and consumer products. The state’s economic development office says the company’s 15 million dollar investment will result in over 30 new direct and indirect jobs.

Athlon Sports has ranked all 130 college football head coaches for 2017 and the highest ranked coach in Louisiana is Tulane’s Willie Fritz, who is ranked 59. Louisiana Tech’s Skip Holtz is ranked 67th, LSU’s Ed Orgeron is 81 followed by UL Lafayette’s Mark Hudspeth at 89 and ULM’s Matt Viator at 101.

NBA Free Agency begins Saturday and Pelicans point guard Jrue Holiday is expected to meet with New Orleans to see if an agreement can be reached. If nothing is done after 48 hours, Holiday will meet with other teams. That’s according to the Vertical’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Head Coach Alvin Gentry says it is the team’s number one priorirty this summer to re-sign Holiday and they can offer the 27-year-old a max contract, which would be 170-million dollars over five years.

Former LSU shortstop Kramer Robertson has signed with the Cardinals after St. Louis selected him in the fourth round earlier this month. Robertson hit .319 this past season for the Tigers.

Media reports indicate South Florida head coach Mark Kingston will be the new head baseball coach at South Carolina. Kingston helped the Bulls reach the NCAA Tournament in two of the last three years. U-S-F won 42 games this past season, the most for that program since 1996.
