The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans heard arguments today in the case of a Rastafarian inmate with dreadlocks who doesn’t want to cut his hair as prison rules state because it goes against his religious beliefs. The 10th Annual National Suit Drive is now underway to help releasing offenders look for a job and be dressed for the part. Founder and president emeritus of Refined By Fire Ministries Elain Ellerbe says they have partnered with Men’s Warehouse and the Department of Corrections to collect gently used professional wear and distribute them to former inmates. She says this gives individuals released from prison the confidence and assurance to be successful.

The annual effort is known as the Michael Ellerbe Legacy Suit Drive as Elain’s husband was the former pre-release director at Dixon Correctional Institute. Ellerbe says this is the chance for the public to contribute to a person’s reintegration into society.

Over 16,500 individuals are released from prison into Louisiana communities each year. Ellerbe says they collect both men and women’s professional wear from suits and sports coats to ties and other accessories. She says wearing a nice business outfit to a job interview makes a big first impression.

Three brothers have been arrested in Monroe after one of the men allegedly shot at an Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Deputy after a traffic stop early yesterday morning. Deputy Glenn Springfield says during the stop, Audley, Ladarrian and Rakin Alexander all exited the vehicle…

One year ago today, Alton Sterling was fatally shot at a Baton Rouge convenience store during a confrontation with two white police officers, resulting in riots, protests, a federal investigation, and even an ambush on Baton Rouge police. Baton Rouge Representative Ted James says many are disappointed there is still no resolution in this case, as residents in his district are crying out for justice.

The federal investigation did not bring forth any charges against officers Blane Salamoni and Howie Lake. State charges could be filed after Attorney General Jeff Landry conducts his investigation into the incident. But James says that could be another six months at least.

A suspect who shot at a Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Deputy is on the loose. It happened around 4:30 this morning in south Monroe during a traffic stop. A sheriff’s office spokesperson says the deputy was not struck as two shots were fired.

Many Americans cannot imagine the Fourth of July without fireworks, but state officials say it’s very important to keep safety measures in mind when setting off the colorful and loud pyrotechnics. Secretary of State Tom Schedler will not provide a Presidential Commission looking into voter fraud with information that would include a voter’s social security number, mother’s maiden name and date of birth. Schedler says he received a similar request from the Department of Justice during the Obama administration…

The Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness is advising the public to cool and drink plenty of water.

The Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s office says one of their deputies was shot at around 4:30 this morning in South Monroe. The deputy was not hit and is okay, but the suspect is still on the loose. KNOE-TV reports it occurred during a traffic stop on 165 South on Ruffin Drive and two shots were fired at the deputy. We’ll have more on this story as it develops.

The Louisiana SPCA is reminding dog owners that pets and Fourth of July celebrations do not mix. Louisiana SPCA CEO Ana Zorrilla says every year animal shelters become populated with dogs that ran from their homes due to anxiety and fear from the loud noises created by fireworks. Zorrilla says pets should be kept inside during fireworks displays to keep them safe, even if they are usually outside…

Each year, an estimated 10-thousand epoeple are treated or hospitalized for fireworks-related injuries.

A road construction worker has died after being hit by a vehicle while working on LA 31 near New Iberia. State Police Sgt. Jared Sandifer says the investigation is ongoing to determine if charges should be filed against the driver, 88-year-old Allen Olivier of St. Martinsville.

LSU outfielder Antoine Duplantis will wear jersey number eight next season. The number eight jersey is given each season to the upperclassman who exemplifies the spirit of LSU Baseball through his leadership and dedication to the program. This tradition was started by outfielder Mikie Mathook, who has since handed it down to Mason Katz, Alex Bregman, Jake Fraley and then Cole Freeman last season. Duplantis is a member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll and during his two seasons at LSU he’s hit .321 with four homers and 100 RBIs.

Coach Paul Mianieri says pitcher Eric Walker will meet with a physician with the Texas Rangers on Thursday. Mainieri says Walker had an MRI done on his injured arm and the Rangers doctor will be able to provide an assessment. Two weeks ago, Walker left a game in the third inning, because of discomfort in his throwing arm.

Meanwhile, Zach Hess will get some starts in the Cape Cod League.

Former LSU pitcher Aaron Nola won his third straight game on Monday as he struck out eight over seven innings as the Phillies blanked the Pittsburgh Pirates 4 to 0. Nola is now 6-5 on the season. In his last three starts, he’s 3-0 with a 1.27 ERA.

It appears there will be a slight change in LSU’s uniforms this season. Based on social media posts of players wearing their jersey for the 2017 season, the stripe on the shoulder will be shorter. It’s a similar design to what the team had from 2002 to end of the 2012 season.

TMZ Sports published a report that said LSU linebacker Jacob Phillips was under investigation for allegedly raping a female student. But WAFB-TV in Baton Rouge has spoken with local authorities and it turns out the woman who made the claim was found to be not credible. No charges have been filed in the case, which was investigated in early June.

Louisiana voters’ private information will not be released, no matter what the Trump Administration says. That’s according to Secretary of State Tom Schedler, who says he denied the voter information request from the Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity, which is looking for information that includes Social Security numbers, the maiden names of mothers and dates of birth.

There are about two dozen states that have said no to releasing private voter identification information. President Trump criticized these states through twitter over the weekend by saying what are these states trying to hide.

A state transportation worker was struck and killed by a vehicle while conducting road repairs near New Iberia yesterday. 63-year-old Paul Featherston was killed. As of now no charges have been filed against the 88-year-old driver.

Ana Zorrilla with the Louisiana SPCA says the Fourth of July is one of the busiest days in terms of animals getting lost from their homes because of fireworks. She says that’s why it’s important to make sure all your pets have a collar and ID tag…

TMZ Sports reported this morning that LSU linebacker Jacob Phillips was being investigated for allegedly raping a female student. Former LSU Tiger DJ LeMahieu has been selected as a reserve for the National League in the 2017 Major League Baseball All-Star game, which will be played a week from tomorrow in Miami. It’s the second time LeMahieu has been named to the team. He’s hitting .303 this season, with three home runs, 38 RBIs and an on-base percentage of .361.

And former Tiger Andrew Stevenson will play in the Triple-A All-Star game as he’ll represent the International League in Tacoma, Washington. The 23-year-old was promoted to Triple-A Syracuse on May 1st and in June he hit .327. Syracuse is an affiliate of the Washington Nationals.

The NBA Free Agency began over the weekend and the Pelicans quickly re-signed starting point guard Jrue Holiday to a five-year contract worth 126-million dollars. Jake Madison with Bourbon Street Shots, says the Holiday signing assures the Pelicans will be in contention for a playoff spot…

But the Western Conference has gotten tougher. Houston, Oklahoma City and Minnesota are three teams that have made major acquisitions and the Denver Nuggets have reportedly signed former Louisiana Tech star Paul Millsap.

LSU senior forward Duop Reath will play for the Australia Emerging Boomers which will participate next month in the World University Games in Taipei. Reath averaged 12 points and six rebounds in his first season with the Tigers last year.
