McNeese leads the Southland and the Cowboys are at Northwestern State. Tulane is the top team in the American Athletic Association and the Green Wave will face the Houston Cougars.

A Shreveport man has been arrested for pretending to be a state trooper. LSP spokesperson Matt Harris says they received a complaint about a door to door steak salesman impersonating a trooper. He says after detectives obtained a warrant for his arrest, they requested 47-year-old Lester Wells’ service at the criminal investigations division in Bossier City.

Harris says Wells confessed to the crime, claiming it helped his sales to portray himself as a state trooper.

It’s another big weekend for festivals across Louisiana. In Lafayette Parish, they’ll be celbrating the fifth annual Boudin Festival in Scott.

The senate approves legislation that scales back the second amendment sales tax holiday that takes place during the first weekend of September. Sales taxes will be collected on purchases of off-road vehicles, airboats and animal feed, but firerams and ammunition remain tax free. The measure heads to the House.

Student body leaders call on the state legislature to fully fund TOPS. Under the governor’s current budget proposal, the scholarship program is only 70% covered. Northwestern State University student president John Pearce testified before the House Appropriations Committee and says he’s heard a lot of concerns from students…:

A coalition called Louisianans for Prison Alternatives made their case for criminal justice reform during a rally on the State Capitol steps. Foundation for Louisiana President Flozell Daniels served as a member of the governor’s Justice Reinvestment Task Force and he’s pushing for legislation to reduce the incarceration rate and save the state millions of dollars.

The governor is urging legislators to pass bills that will give some inmates more parole hearings, alternatives to prison and shorter sentences for those who commit non-violent crimes.

Hayes spoke in court today and apologized to the Smith family for their loss and once again claimed he acted in self-defense in the shooting following a car accident in New Orleans. Hayes’ attorney, John Fuller, told New Orleans TV stations that the Hayes family is hurt, but not broken by the sentence.

The 2017 Saints schedule will be released tonight at 7:00. There have been some schedule leaks and the Saints will reportedly kick-off the season on Monday night at Minnesota. New Orleans home opener is the next week against the defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots. And the Black and Gold will host the Atlanta Falcons on Christmas Eve.
Because of the likelihood of rain in Lexington on Saturday, the schedule for the LSU baseball team’s series against Kentucky has been adjusted. The two teams have decided to play a doubleheader on Friday starting at one o’ clock. Both games will be nine-innings. There will be no game on Saturday and then the series will conclude with a contest at noon on Sunday.

Cardell Hayes received a 25 year prison sentence today for the shooting death of former Saints star Will Smith. Hayes was facing up to 60 years. Hayes spoke in court today and apologized to the Smith family for their loss and once again claimed he acted in self-defense in the shooting following a car accident.

There are racial divisions over how police treat the public according to an LSU survey. Dr. Michael Henderson with the LSU Public Policy Research Lab says 75 percent of white residents trust police not to use excessive force. He says whites are also twice as likely to think police will treat blacks and whites equally, but blacks have a much different perspective…

He says they also found a majority of blacks think the country needs further changes to achieve equal rights, while most whites do not.

Even after the state finally gains access to federal flood recovery dollars, the feud continues between Democratic Governor John Bel Edwards and Republican Congressman Garret Graves. Graves said recently that he would resign if the federal government was the hold up in dispersing the funds. But Edwards says the state didn’t have access to the money until last week….

A state judge in New Orleans sentences Cardell Hayes to 25 years in prison without parole for the shooting that killed former Saints star Will Smith and injured his wife Raquel. He was facing a sentence between 20 and 60 years. Four months ago, Hayes was found guilty of manslaughter and attempted manslaughter.

Today marks 7 years since an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig killed 11 people off the coast of Louisiana. Twenty-eight-year-old Gordon Jones was one of those. His father, Keith Jones, told Jim Engster on Talk Louisiana that dealing with the loss of his son isn’t any easier 7 years later.

The film, Deepwater Horizon, documents the tragic events of April 20, 2010. Jones says the producers met with him before filming to learn more about his son, like his love for golf. He says Gordon’s big scene is when he gives a fossil to Mark Wahlberg, but he was also honored in another small tribute.

Jones says unfortunately, this kind of tragedy could happen again. He says there were lots of protections against blowouts on the Deepwater Horizon, but greed caused BP officials to strip those protections away in an effort to save money.

Gordon’s wife, Michelle, was due to have their child, Max, just weeks after Gordon was supposed to come home. Jones says Michelle has since remarried, and they live now in the same subdivision as Jones, so the family can stay together.

Race relations are worsening in eyes of the public, according to a recent LSU survey. Dr. Michael Henderson with the LSU Public Policy Research Lab says the share of people who believe race relations are getting worse rose by almost 20 percent since 2014. He says there’s a racial divide in opinions on whether racial equality exists today.

Henderson says views are equally split in regards to confidence in local police. The survey finds 75 percent of white residents trust police not to use excessive force. He says whites are also twice as likely to think police will treat blacks and whites equally.

State Police say charges are pending in the case of a fiery 5-vehicle, 18-wheeler involved crash on I-10 in West Baton Rouge Parish that claimed the life of a man from Alexandria. The victim is identified as 26-year-old Ronald Allen. Trooper Bryan Lee says traffic began slowing in the eastbound lanes near Port Allen around 5:30 Wednesday…:

Saints Head Coach Sean Payton says the late Will Smith would have been the team’s defensive line coach in 2016, if he had not been gunned down last April. Payton spoke at a pre-sentencing hearing for Cardell Hayes, who was convicted on manslaughter in the fatal shooting of the former Saints star. At the end of his testimony, Payton choked up and said Smith was a special person. Hayes will be sentenced no later than Friday. He faces up to 60 years.

NFL fans should be excited today. That’s because the 2017 schedule is unveiled tonight at 7 PM on the NFL Network.

A week from today, it’s the first round of the NFL draft. The Sacramento Bee reports LSU running back Leonard Fournette visited with the 49ers yesterday. San Francisco has the second overall pick in the draft. Meanwhile, Bleacher Report’s Mike Tanier calls LSU receivers Malachi Dupre and Travin Dural among the best kept secrets in this draft.

Louisiana Tech baseball had another good offensive night last night as the Bulldogs outlasted Little Rock 10-6. For the second consecutive night Jonathan Washam had three hits, Brent Diaz drilled a three-run homer and Parker Bates reached three times.

The Ragin Cajuns baseball won their fifth straight as UL Lafayette defeated Southeastern Louisiana 9-2. Brad Antchak, Steven Sensley and Kennon Fontenot each had three hits.

Also last night, Tulane topped Southern Miss 10-8.

Today, LSU leaves for its series against Kentucky. The Wildcats lead the SEC East, while Tigers freshman center fielder Zach Watson has a 12-game hitting streak.

Former LSU men’s basketball coach Johnny Jones has found a new job. Jones has been named an assistant at Nevada. Eric Musselman is the head coach of the Wolpack and he served as an assistant under Jones, during the 2014-15 season when the Tigers received a bid to the NCAA Tournament.

A report on human trafficking showed a 25 percent increase in victims over the past year. That’s according to the Department of Children and Family Services. Child Welfare Consultant Walter Fahr says the primary reason for the jump could be a better job of identifying victims..:

Caddo and Orleans Parishes were the two most frequently identified areas for trafficking and parish of origin.

State Police have identified the man killed in yesterday’s five-vehicle crash on Interstate 10 in West Baton Rouge Parish. Twenty-six-year-old Ronald Allen of Alexandria was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities say allen’s Impala was crushed between two 18-wheelers causing a fire that fully engulfed three vehicles. State Polcie says an 18-wheeler that failed to reduce his speed as he approached slower moving traffic led to the fatal wreck. Charges are pending.

College student leaders from around the state are asking lawmakers to fully fund TOPS. Southeastern Louisiana University student president Erin Fernandez says with all the uncertainty surrounding the state budget, it’s hard for students and parents to plan…:

State Tourism officials have established the Louisiana Bass Trail, which includes seven lakes at state parks in north Louisiana. Lt.
