Despite three turnovers, the Saints still beat the New York jets 31 to 19 to improve to 10-and-4 on the season. Quarterback Drew Brees threw for 285 yards and two touchdowns. But Brees, who also threw an interception, was not happy about the team’s three turnovers….

Carolina also won yesterday, as they defeated Green Bay 31-24. The Panthers and the Saints are both 10-and-4, tied for first place in the NFC South, with New Orleans owning the tie breaker. Atlanta can move within one game of the division lead, with a win tonight over Tampa Bay.

And other NFL note…the league has suspended Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis for the final two games of the regular season for his illegal hit on Packers wide receiver Davante Adams.

Governor John Bel Edwards provided his plan on how the state should address a looming one-billion dollar budget deficit. Edwards says he’s not calling for any new taxes, but believes they can make up the revenue by reducing tax credits, removing sales tax exemptions and expanding the state’s sales tax to particular services, like cable T-V. Edwards says a special session will be needed in February to pass these proposals, unless legislators are not willing to work towards a compromise …

Four Louisiana casinos owned by Pinnacle Entertainment will soon be owned by Penn National Gaming as part of a two-point-eight billion dollar deal between the two companies. Wade Duty of the Casino Association of Louisiana says operation of the casinos in Louisiana did not force the deal….

The White House says judicial nominee Matthew Peterson has withdrawn his nomination. Peterson failed to answer basic legal questions when quesioned by Republican Senator John Kennedy. Peterson admitted he never tried a case.

State Representative Chris Broadwater has announced he’s stepping down from the state legislature, so he can spend more time with his family. Broadwater has represented Hammond and parts of Tangipahoa Parish for the last six years. The GOP legislator has a reputation of working with both Republicans and Democrats…..

Time is running out to make sure your Christmas packages sent through the U.S. Postal Service get there on time.  Some 15 billion pieces will be sent between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day.  U.S. Postal Service spokesperson Twana Barber says this week is the busiest for them…

A 2.8 billion dollar deal was sealed today, and that means new ownership at some of the state’s most prominent casinos. Penn National Gaming purchased Pinnacle Entertainment, which operates the L’auberge in Baton Rouge and Lake Charles, and Boomtown in New Orleans and Bossier City. Wade Duty of the Casino Association of Louisiana says the buyout will not  lead to big changes for players.

Duty says the four Louisiana casinos involved in the sale are just part of the transactions that occur between large casino companies.

Duty says he does not anticipate Penn National Gaming expanding their new properties in Louisiana.

Penn will now operate 41 properties across several states.

Governor John Bel Edwards outlined his proposals for closing a $1 billion dollar budget gap, also known as the fiscal cliff. The governor proposes higher sales taxes on utilities that businesses pay, new sales taxes on various services like cable TV and changes to individual income tax brackets. He does not support the renewal of a one-cent temporary sales tax that will expire on June 30th…:

The governor says he plans to unveil a budget proposal on January 19th, but it will include $1 billion in cuts to fill the gap, since no decision on tax reform will be made until an anticipated February special session. He says nobody will like the reductions they see…:

About a billion dollars in temporary taxes will fall off the books June 30th, which is causing the fiscal cliff. Edwards says next month they will also present a separate document that will outline how government could be funded if legislators agree on how to close the gap. U-L Lafayette has introduced Billy Nappier as its new football coach. Napier is a former assistant under Nick Saban at Alabama. In a statement from Saban, he calls Nappier an outstanding coach, terrific recruiter and someone who will work hard to help the players be successful.

The Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office is asking the public for help finding Mary Darlene Howard’s killer, 37 years later. Sheriff Sam Craft says 15-year-old Mary was found dead April 27th 1980 in the woods in Leesville close to Fort Polk. He says the initial investigation did not result in an arrest.

Craft says investigators continue to follow up on these leads and encourage anyone who might remember something about this case to contact the Sheriff’s department. He also hopes to get in contact with Howard’s family.

Craft says in the coming months, they will also reopen other cold cases in Vernon Parish. He says his department is corresponding with the crime lab in Lake Charles to help crack Mary Howard’s cold case.

An LSU Ag Center researcher believes he’s made a breakthrough when it comes to combating chronic wasting disease, mad cow disease and C-J-D, which is found in one-eighth of Alzheimer’s patients.  Dr. Frank Bastain has developed a way to grow a bacteria that causes these diseases which makes it possible to develop tests and vaccines for them…

Bastian says he hopes to begin working on a vaccine that could potentially cure the disease, especially in humans suffering from C-J-D.  It develops in persons between 40 and 80 years old and ninety percent of those infected die with a few weeks to a year…

Louisiana is one of a few states reporting widespread flu activity. State Health Department flu bug expert, Doctor Frank Welch, says the active flu season can be blamed on the Influenza A strain and the flu vaccine is only 30% effective. But he still strongly suggests getting the flu shot because it helps protect against four different strains of the virus.

When speaking at UL-Lafayette’s graduation ceremony today, former Governor Kathleen Blanco spoke about her battle against liver cancer. She said even though there are no known treatments to cure the type of melanoma she has, her hope remains alive…:

The NFL has fined Saints head coach Sean Payton for 10-thousand dollars for improperly entering the field during last week’s loss to Atlanta. Payton was hit with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty late in the game and Payton said afterwards he was trying to call a timeout.

That was a tough loss against the Falcons. New Orleans can get back in the win column when they host the New York Jets on Sunday. Payton on how the team is trying to bounce back…

Arizona State offensive coordinator Billy Napier has been named the new head coach at UL Lafayette. Before he was at A-S-U, Napier spent several years coaching on Nick Saban’s staff at Alabama, helping the Crimson Tide win national championships in 2011 and 2015. Napier will be introduced to Cajun nation at a press conference at noon.

Grambling State goes after its second straight H-B-C-U national championship when they face undefeated North Carolina A-and-T in Saturday’s celebration bowl in Atlanta. Grambling is led by Q-B DeVante Kincade, but he goes up against an A-and-T defense that’s allowed just 12 points a game. Kick-off is at 11 AM.

Troy, who upset the LSU Tigers in 2017, can win its 11th game of the season on Saturday when they face North Texas in the New Orleans Bowl. U-N-T is led by the Conference USA offensive player of the year, Mason Fine, who is 5-foot-10. He set school records for passing and touchdowns. Troy’s defense has intercepted 15 passes this year. Kick-off in the Dome is at noon.

In college basketball on Saturday, the Tigers look to extend their winning streak to four games when they host Stephen F Austin. The Lumberjacks are nine and one. Tip-off is at noon.
