State Police say a Bastrop man will be charged with attempted murder of a police officer once he is released from the hospitals. Authorities say 36-year-old Dusty Sanders exchanged gunman with a Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s deputy early yesterday morning. Sanders remains in the hospital. The deputy was not injured.

State Police say the man who exchanged gunfire with a a Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s deputy early yesterday morning has been identified as 36-years-old Dusty Sanders of Bastrop. Sanders was shot and remains in a hospital. But once discharged, he’ll be charged with attempted first degree murder of a police officer. The deputy was not injuried.

A head-on crash kills one and leaves a second person in critical condition in DeSoto Parish near Ajax.  Louisiana State Police Master Trooper Glenn Younger says following the collision of the vehicles on Louisiana-174 last night, one of the vehicles burst into flames and troopers are trying to figure out why…

The yet unidentified driver of the Mercury Grand Marquis that burst into flames was killed while the driver of the Honda Accord they hit, identified as 58-year-old Alice P. Thomas of Pelican, is in critical condition at an area hospital.  With the condition of the vehicles, Younger says they don’t know if alcohol played a factor…

A properly restrained juvenile in the Thomas’ vehicle sustained minor injuries.

Police are continuing to investigate a fight between juveniles in St. James Parish at a Christmas Eve bonfire celebration on the Mississippi River Levee in Gramercy.  Sheriff Willy Martin Jr. says, two white males and two black males got in a fight injuring an unidentified 15-year-old and 17-year-old Shannon Dumas Jr.  He says it’s been slow to reconstruct what happened since police didn’t interview anyone at the scene…

There have been allegations on social media that the incident was racially motivated.  Martin says deputies are looking at the accusation very closely since the victim felt the fight had nothing to do with race…

A Christmas eve fatal shooting initially ruled an accident, is now claissified as a homicide. Kenner police charged 29-year-old Dominque Wix with manslaughter in the death of 25-year-old Akoya Skeith. Initially, Wix told officers Skeith had accidentally fired the weapon while holding it, but Lieutenant Brian McGregor says the autopsy indicated that the death was not accidental.

After a second interview McGregor says Wix then told officers that she discharged the gun.

McGregor says Wix told the police that the shooting was not the result of an argument or altercation, and that she sought aid for Skeith after the shooting.

McGregor says Kenner PD has been called out to the home twice previously for domestic disputes.

Kenner Police have charged 29-year-old Kendra Wix with manslaughter in the Christmas Eve shooting death of 25-year-old Akoya Skeith. Lt. Brian McGregor says it was initially ruled an accidential shooting, but after looking at the autopsy report and talking with Wix again, detectives determined she discharged the gun….

Five law enforcement officers were killed in the line of duty during 2017 in Louisiana. That’s according to National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial fund President Craig Floyd, who says nine officers were killed in the Bayou State in 2016. Floyd says there was a decrease nationwide and he credits better communication between police and citizens and more transparency…

The US Department of Agriculture will test a new method in 2018 for controlling the rampant feral hog population that involves using sodium nitrite. It’s typically used as a meat preserver, and the salty flavor usually keeps wild animals uninterested. Ag Commissioner Mike Strain says part of the testing will be finding out how to get the pigs to actually eat it…

Reichardt says a deputy fired his weapon after attempting to assist a motorist that he thought was stranded in the Lakeshore area of Ouachita Parish.

The Saints returned to the practice field today to continue preparations for the regular season finale in Tampa Bay. Wide receiver Michael Thomas was one of seven Saints players not spotted at practice during the portion that’s open to the media. Starting tackles Terron Armstead and Ryan Ramczyk were also absent.

Both Alabama and Clemson arrived in New Orleans today for Monday night’s Sugar Bowl. It’s the fourth consecutive apperance in the College Football Playoff for the Crimson Tide. Head Coach Nick Saban his players are more concerned about the outcome of the game than the bowl experience, because they know it’s win or go home.

At the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, Florida State fell behind six to nothing, but the Seminoles scored the next 33 points to beat the Golden Eagles 42 to 13. James Blackman threw four touchdown passes, three of them to Auden Tate.

Tonight in the Texas Bowl in Houston, it’s Missouri versus Texas.

LSU Coach Ed Orgeron spoke today for the first time since the football program signed 21 players during the early signing period. The class is currently ranked as the 12th best in the nation and Head Coach Ed Orgeron is pleased with what they’ve done so far…
