Move.org says the average cost for childbirth and childcare costs in Louisiana is 12-thousand dollars and that’s cheaper than daycare costs alone in D-C, Massachusetts, New York and Connecticut…

The two states that rank ahead of Louisiana are Mississippi and Alabama for the cost of having a baby.

Senator John Kennedy is once again bringing legislation aimed at getting dead people off the social security rolls. The Senator says every year the federal government spends 144 billion dollars on improper payments, through Social security, Medicare, and other social programs.

Kennedy cited a recent case of a New Orleans woman who was prosecuted for stealing 300,000 dollars of social security checks.

No action at the State Capitol today, but when lawmakers arrive on Monday, the House Ways and Means committee will discuss a bill that will lower the state sales tax from 4.45 to four-percent. The state sales tax was four percent for many years before Governor Edwards took office, and in his first year it jumped to five percent to cover a significant budget gap, before falling to 4.45 percent last year. The National Weather Service says they’ve confirmed that eight tornadoes touched down in north Louisiana on Wednesday, one of them caused a lot of damage at Jimmie Davis State Park in Jackson.

House Ways and Means will hear a bill Monday that would repeal the .45 percent state sales tax levied in the last legislative session to plug a budget deficit. But Haughton Rep. Dodie Horton says the nearly half-a-cent sales tax is producing a surplus

Congressman Steve Scalise says he’s still struggling to forgive the man who shot him and four others as Republicans practiced for a charity baseball game in June 2017. A week ago today, Scalise traveled with the Vice President to Opelousas and said it was good to talk with one of the pastors who said he’s already forgiven the man charged with burning his church down. Scalise says his Catholic faith teaches forgiveness and he’s trying to get there.

For the third straight game, LSU allowed more than 10 runs in a contest and the Fighting Tigers now have a four game losing streak after losing 14-4 to Arkansas last night. Starter Ma’Khail Hilliard allowed six runs over three innings and Riggs Threadgill gave up another six runs in one inning. Eric Walker will try to get LSU back on track when he takes the ball tonight.

Because of all of the rain, the state baseball tournament in Sulphur has been postponed of Sunday. The LHSAA hopes to complete 12 games at McMurray Park on Mother’s Day. The finals would take place on Monday and Tuesday.

We’ll have at least two Game 7s in the NBA playoffs on Mother’s Day. Philadelphia versus Toronto and Portland versus Denver have been extended to seven games series. We could have a third Game 7, if Houston can beat Golden State tonight, who will be without Kevin Durant, because of a calf injury.

Louisiana Tech will conclude their home schedule this weekend by hosting Western Kentucky. The games will be played on ULM’s campus, because of damage done to J-C Love Field by an EF 3 tornado. Admission is free to all three contests and Tech will celebrate 12 seniors before Saturday’s game.

ULM is on the road for a series at Troy, while the Ragin Cajuns will host Georgia State. Both Louisiana schools need victories this weekend if they want to make the Sun Belt Tournament.

The Saints rookie camp begins today and the team has announced that its entire draft class has been signed, including second round pick Erik McCoy, who could be the team’s starting center in 2019.

Former Saints tight end Ben Watson’s retirement looks to be a short one as the veteran will reportedly sign with the Patriots. New England needs help at that position with the retirement of Rob Gronkowski. Watson caught 46 passes for the Saints last season. He’s a former first round pick of the Patriots.

East Baton Rouge prosecutors believe a former LSU student charged in the hazing death of fraternity pledge Maxwell Gruver deleted hundreds of files from his cellphone before authorities could search it. The D-A’s office has requested that Google turnover all deleted data from Matthew Naquin’s phone.

Graduation ceremonies will take place on the LSU and Southern campuses over the next two days. Louisiana has seen 13 straight months of over-the-year job gains, according to the latest figures from the state Workforce Commission. But LSU Economist Loren Scott says it’s also tempting for new grads to look for work in Texas….

A flash flood watch is in effect for most of the state today. The Acadiana region is under a flash flood warning. Up in northwest Louisiana, the Red River has rised above flood stage in downtown Shreveport. But Bossier Parish Sheriff’s office spokesperson, Lt. Bill Davis, says they are not expecting a repeat of the 2015 flood. He says the main concern is low lying areas with poor drainage…

The White House has deployed to the Persian Gulf B-52 bombers from the Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana. The U-S Air Force has released photos showing the bombers arriving at a base in Qatar. The deployment is in response to a number of troubling and escalatory indications and warnings from Iran.

Another brutal baseball game for LSU fans to endure last night as for the third straight game the Tigers gave up more ten runs in a loss. Last night, Arkansas hit five home runs in a 14-4 route of LSU. The Tigers have given up 45 runs over their last three games. That’s the most in a three-game span since 1997. Starter Ma’Khail Hilliard gave up six runs over three innings and Riggs Threadgill gave up six runs, including a grand slam, in one inning of relief. Eric Walker will try to right the ship tonight in Game two of the series from Baum Stadium in Fayetteville.

After beating LSU 12-to-1 on Tuesday, Louisiana Tech begins a weekend series tonight against Western Kentucky. The games will be played at ULM, because of tornado damage to the Bulldogs home steadium. Tech is in fourth place in Conference USA, while the Hilltoppers are in third.

The Ragin Cajuns have a chance to pick up some wins this weekend as they host Georgia State. The Panthers are the worst team in the Sun Belt. ULM is at Troy. Tulane visits Houston. The Green Wave are in second place in the American Atheltic Conference.

In the Southland, Southeastern Louisiana and Sam Houston State are tied for first place and they are scheduled for a three-game series in Hammond this weekend. The Lions started the year with a 2-8 record and Matt Riser’s team now has a chance to win a conference championship….

Most of Louisiana is under a flash flood watch today and tomorrow as a nasty storm system continues to dump rain on the region. Portions of Bossier Parish took on large amounts of water Thursday, and Sheriff spokesperson Lt. Bill Davis says those areas and others could be in for another round of flooding…

The Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance is urging high school seniors to take the proper steps prior to graduation to ensure there are no unforeseen issues that may delay an eligible student from receiving the TOPS scholarship. Administrator of Scholarships and Grants Paula Smith says inconsistencies in student records can often cause a snag.

Smith says many times there may be an issue with a student’s transcript. She says make sure the probelm is corrected before the high school counselor leaves for summer break or the student may have to wait until August before they can be processed for TOPS eligibility.

A struggling LSU baseball team begins a series tonight against one of the SEC’s best teams. Arkansas leads the West Division with a 17-7 record, while the Tigers have lost three in a row and sit in fourth place in the West. Coach Paul Mainieri says Arkansas is an outstanding team, but they plan to battle as hard as they can

The Tigers have had a lot of success against Arkansas, winning 13 of their last 14 SEC regular-season series, including the last seven in a row. First pitch is at 6:30.

The weather is causing problems at the state baseball tournament in Sulphur. All state semifinal baseball games scheduled for today have been postponed. An updated schedule will be posted on the LHSAA website by 6 PM.

In college hoops news, Ragin Cajuns forward Justin Miller has announced he’s entering the NCAA transfer portal. Miller started the last two seasons and during his three-year career in Lafayette he averaged nine points and five rebounds a game. He did not give a reason on why he’s leaving.

ESPN reports Golden State star Kevin Durant suffered a mild calf strain in last night’s Game 5 win over Houston and he’ll be re-evaluated next week, which means he miss the rest of the series.
