The Pelicans made a splash at the start of NBA free agency last night by using their cap space on two widely respected veterans at positions of need. The team started the night by securing New Orleans’ best shooter since Peja Stojakovic, by signing free agent guard JJ Reddick. Reddick joins New Orleans on a two-year contract and Locked on Pelicans Podcast Publisher Jake Madison says he’s exactly what the young team needed.

The 35-year-old averaged 18 points a game last year and is a career 41 percent 3-point shooter. The Pels also traded two second-round picks to Utah for Center Derrick Favors. Favors is known as a tough interior defender, rebounder and great locker room guy.

Leaving the Big Easy are Julius Randle and Elfird Payton. Both players have reportedly signed free-agent deals with the New York Knicks.

LSU has announced the hiring of College Football Hall of Famer and longtime USC Coach John Robinson as a senior consultant. Robinson had two stints as the head coach of the Trojans and won a national championship. LSU says Robinson will assist head coach Ed Orgeron as a consultant of daily planning of practice, personnel and game planning.

Former Capitol High star Seimone Augustus was inducted into the National High School Hall of Fame this past weekend. Augustus scored 36-hundred points at the Baton Rouge high school and had 1,728 rebounds. She was a two-time Miss Basketball Award and finished her prep career by winning back to back LHSAA Four-a titles.

Many are praying for UL-Lafayette head baseball coach Tony Robichaux who is in I-C-U in New Orleans. The school says Robichaux is in critical condition after undergoing a second surgery following a heart attack.

Former LSU standout D-J LeMahieu has been named as the American League Player of the Week. LeMaheiu had seven hits and drove in seven runs as the Yankees swept their game series over the Red Sox in London. LeMahieu is now hitting .345 on the season, which leads the American League.

Two men are dead following a break-in at a Shreveport home early Sunday morning. A female witness who lived there told investigators that her ex-boyfriend, 39-year-old Brandon Brown, broke into the home through a master bedroom window. Caddo Parish Sheriff’s spokesperson Cindy Chadwick…

The victim, 36-year-old Perry Bailey, a Barksdale Air Force airman, was transported to a hospital and later died of his injuries. Chadwick says as the female and her family were fleeing the home, there was another gunshot.

Chadwick says there were five children in the home at the time of the break-in, ages 6 to 17.

LSU’s Pennington Biomedical Research Center has found that people who exercise regularly, but do not lose as much weight as expected are eating too much. Doctor Tim Church says they looked at people who were overweight or had obesity over a six-month period and came away with those results…

Church says an additional 100 to 150 calories a day can diminish the effect of a calorie-burning exercise…

In Lafayette, police are investigating a shooting that resulted in the death of a two-year-old. The incident happened around eight o’clock Sunday night and three adults at the home have been arrested in what is being ruled an accidental shooting. Lafayette Police spokesperson Corporal Bridgette Dugas says they have been charged with negligent homicide.

When officers arrived at the home they found the two-year child suffering from a gunshot wound, he later died at a local hospital. The child’s mother 22-year old MaKayla Cormier is among the three arrested. Dugas says police are also searching for a fourth suspect.

Dugas says death investigations are always traumatic for everyone involved, especially when a child’s life is cut short.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is asking fishermen to be on the lookout for the Asian swamp eel. LDWF biologist Robert Bourgeois says it’s a headscratcher as to how it got into local waters…

Bourgeois says their main concern is that the Asian Swamp eel will eat the same food as native fish do. The Asian swamp eel is brown, gold-speckled and does not have fins.

The Supreme Court has ruled that federal courts cannot get involved in accusations that election maps are too partisan. Fair Districts Louisiana co-founder Brandon Faske is disappointed in the ruling and says gerrymandering is a problem. He says just look at how partisan the districts are for Congressmen Garret Graves and Cedric Richmond…

A new fiscal year budget for Louisiana goes into effect today. The spending plan contains funding increases for K-through-12 education, public colleges and early childhood education, which will allow more low-income families to receive assistance so their children can attend pre-K education.

Eunice Police Chief Randy Fontenot says his officers arrested two individuals involved in a shooting set up so that the victim would not have to attend his child support court hearing. Fontenot says Michael Rung was shot in the chest and his story that he was robbed didn’t hold up when questioned by detectives…

Fontenot says Rung had his friend, Jacob Jack shoot him and both are facing numerous charges.

The US Supreme Court has ruled that federal courts cannot intervene when there are accusations of partisan gerrymandering. The decision means any policies regarding gerrymandering will have to be handled at the state level and in Congress, and Fair Districts Louisiana co-founder Brando Faske says states like California have already demonstrated effective ways to ensure non-partisan districts.

The Caddo Sheriff’s Office continues its investigation today into Sunday’s deadly double shooting. Authorities say a man broke into his former girlfriend’s home and shot her current boyfriend. The intruder was also shot and both died. The woman and five children escaped through the kitchen door unharmed. Names of the deceased have not been released.

Shell confirms two people were killed on one of their oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico on Sunday. The energy company says the incident happened 214 miles south of New Orleans and occurred during a routine and mandatory test of the platform’s lifeboat launch. Moments after the NBA Free Agency period began, it was reported the Pelicans are signing 35-year-old J-J Redick to a two-year contract worth 26.5 million dollars a year. Redick is a career 41-percent three-point shooter and the veteran guard averaged a career-high 18 points a game last season in Philadelphia.

The Pels are also reportedly adding big man Derrick Favors in a sign and trade with the Utah Jazz. The trade is expected to cost the Pels draft picks. Ferguson averaged almost 12 points and seven rebounds a game last year.

ESPN reports New Orleans also signed EuroLeague forward Nicolo Melli to a two-year, 8-million dollar contract. Over the past four seasons, Melli shot 42-percent from three-point territory.

Brooklyn is the big winner in NBA free agency as the Nets are adding Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. Former LSU Tiger Garrett Temple is also heading to Brooklyn on a reported two-year contract. Still no word on where Kawhi Leonard will sign, he’ll reportedly begin meeting with teams today.

UL-Lafayette Baseball coach Tony Robichaux is now in critical condition after undergoing a second surgery at Oschner Health Center in New Orleans. The school says doctors are keeping a close on Robichaux who is in I-C-U. He’s been hospitalized for a week after suffering a heart attack.
LSU Quarterback Joe Burrow spent this past weekend in Thibodaux at the Manning Passing Academy. Burrow threw for 31-hundred yards, 18 touchdowns, and five interceptions last season. Eunice Police Chief Randy Fontenot says he’s lucky to be alive.

Rung was scheduled to be in court the morning following the incident.  Fontenot says when taking a statement from Rung, some things were just not adding up.

Union Parish authorities say a three-year-old child is in critical condition after the little boy was attacked by three neighborhood dogs, two of them are pit bull mixes. Sheriff Dusty Gates says the child’s mother found her son next to a shed in the yard with his clothes ripped off and suffering from numerous injuries.

Louisiana Lottery spokesperson BreAnne Frye says Lala Singleton was tagged in a Facebook post by her sister-in-law in Connecticut that someone in Baton Rouge won a million-dollar Powerball prize, and turns out it was her. Frye says Singleton plans to donate some of her winnings to a charitable cause close to her heart.
