The National Hurricane Center says storm surge and wind watches could be issued later today. Governor John Bel Edwards is meeting with his unified command team at this hour. Rainfall totals through Monday could be as high as 15 inches for some areas of the state.

Southeastern Louisiana is the first school in the state to have a voluntary program to help students who are recovering from a drug or alcohol abuse addiction. Interim program coordinator Madison Evans says the program called “Lion Up Recovery” will have on-campus support groups and sober social events. She says the program can also be an important tool in combatting the hazing culture that come with college life…

Today is day two of testimony in the Matthew Naquin trial. He’s the former LSU student facing negligent homicide and obstruction of justice charges in the suspected hazing death of fratnerity pledge Maxwell Gruver. The coroner says Gruver died from alcohol poisioning. But Naquin’s attorney told the six-person jury that Gruver was not forced to drink, while the prosecution claims Naquin was over the top during a hazing ritual.

LSU baseball has announced the hiring of Eddie Smith as the Tigers new hitting coach. Smith is 35-years-old and last season helped Tulane put up some big offensive numbers. He’s also been an assistant coach at Virginia, Notre Dame and Santa Clara. The Washington native also spent four seasons as a head coach on the junior college level. Tiger Rag Editor James Moran says Smith will be in charge of making the Tigers a better hitting team…

The Saints announce their first training camp practice open to the public will be Friday morning, July 26th. A total of 12 practices will be open to the public. On Sunday night, August 4th, the Black and Gold will practice at Turchin Stadium on Tulane’s campus. The Saints also announce that the seating for fans who watch practice at the team’s training facility in Metairie will be covered and misted.

West Monroe quarterback Garrett Kahmann has committed to ULM, after reportedly receiving an offer from the Warhawks last September. Kahmann led the Rebels last season to the Class 5A championship game in his first season as a starter.

Hall of Fame high school football coach James Waguespack has passed away after suffering a stroke on Sunday. Waguespack was a head football coach for 32 years and won 231 games and two state championships, one at St. James and the other at Cecilia.

The American League beat the National League again last night four to three in the Major League Baseball All-Star game. Former LSU Tiger Alex Bregman had a hit and a run scored.

A disorganized area of low pressure over the far northeastern Gulf of Mexico is expected to become a tropical depression by tomorrow and head in the direction of Louisiana. National Hurricane Center Senior Hurricane Specialist Jack Bevan says forecasting a weather system of this nature is challenging.

Regardless of where this system ends up, it’s expected to bring heavy rainfall to the Bayou State. The National Weather Service projects Lafayette and Houma could see 10 to 15 inches of rain through Monday morning. Baton Rouge and New Orleans could see between eight to 10 inches. Even Alexandria could see four to six inches.

Before the rain gets here, we expect another hot day. The northern half of the state is under a heat advisory. Heat index readings are expected to reach 105 to 110 degrees.

We’re Less than a month away from qualifying for the governor’s race and Republican challenger Eddie Rispone has yet to release any statewide television or radio ads. Rispone has a digital ad, where he spends most of the time talking about his support for President Trump. UL-Lafayette Political Science Professor Pearson Crosss says the Baton Rouge businessman hopes to take advantage of the President’s statewide popularity…

The Saints released their training camp schedule today. The first practice open to the public will be Friday, July 26th at 8:50 in the morning. A total of 12 practices will be open to the public. On Sunday night, August 4th, the Black and Gold will practice at Turchin Stadium on Tulane’s campus. The Saints are also set to hold joint practices with the Chargers in Costa Mesa, California on August 15th and 16th, prior to their preseason game in Carson, California on August 18th. The Saints also announced that the seating for fans who watch practice at the team’s training facility in Metairie will be covered and misted.

Two former LSU Tigers will start for the American League in tonight’s All-Star game. D-J LeMahieu will bat second and play second, while Alex Bregman will bat sixth and play third base. LeMahieu leads the AL in batting average in his first season in New York, while Bregman leads the Astros in home runs and RBIs.

Pelicans first-round pick Jaxon Hayes put on an impressive performance in his Summer League Debut last night in Las Vegas. Hayes had 28 points, four rebounds, and three blocked shots. The eighth overall pick had a nasty one-handed dunk as he skied over a Bulls player in a 109-72 victory. The Pels next Summer League game is tomorrow night against Cleveland.

The National Hurricane Center expects a tropical depression will form by Thursday from a broad area of low pressure that’s moving into the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of the Florida panhandle. State Climatologist Barry Keim says the big concern is the potential for heavy rainfall starting Friday and lasting through the weekend

The tropical development that could bring large amounts of rainfall to Louisiana later this week could have a mitigating impact on the Gulf of Mexico’s algae bloom.  LSU Professor Dr. Nancy Rabalais says as the forecast becomes more clear, just how much of an effect the storm will have will be more apparent.

Rabalais says if the algae bloom is disrupted, it will only be a temporary fix.

Rabalais says another issue caused by the opening of the Bonnet Carre Spillway, the Gulf of Mexico’s hypoxic area known as the dead zone, could see conditions restored to be more favorable for marine life.

John Bel Edwards’ re-election campaign says they have a record amount of cash on hand for an incumbent Louisiana Governor, with 9.6 million dollars in the bank.

UL Lafayette Poli Sci Professor Pearson Cross says Edwards’ re-election campaign made a strong fundraising effort early in anticipation of a major clash with US Senator John Kennedy that never materialized.

The Edwards campaign was barred from fundraising between April 8th and July 7th due to laws prohibiting governors from fundraising during the Legislative session.

It’s a significant pile of money, so as a Democrat incumbent in a Republican state, where is a lot of it coming from?

Edwards is up against Republicans Eddie Rispone and Congressman Ralph Abraham.

Cross says Edwards is in a good position to be re-elected because along with the hefty war chest, the Governor has something that money can’t buy…

A dog is dead after a high jacking incident in Baton Rouge. On Sunday, a man left his dog in the car with the AC on while he was inside a doughnut shop, only for someone to steal the car with the dog in tow. East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Casey Hicks says the victim was injured trying to stop the suspect.

That led to a citywide hunt for both the dog and car that ran over 24 hours.  Hicks says investigators found the suspect who led them to the car.  They discovered the dog in the car, and have determined the animal died of heat exhaustion. 30-year-old Leslie Aguillard was arrested on a litany of charges as a result.

The vehicle was abandoned on South Sherwood Forest, with an animal hospital close by.  Hicks says the death of the animal was absolutely an unnecessary heartbreak the family is now having to endure.

There is some good news with this potential storm. LSU biologist Doctor Nancy Rabalais says waves from system can help dissipate the algae blooms that has led to the closure of beaches along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Rabalais says it can also help make conditions in the Dead Zone along the Louisiana coast more favorable for marine life…

The latest legal battle over President Barack Obama’s signature health care law takes place in a federal appeals courtroom in New Orleans. A three-judge panel hears arguments today on whether the Affordable Care Act is still constitutional after Congress eliminated the penalty for those who choose not to buy insurance. It’s unclear when the panel will rule, but their decision will likely be appealed to the U-S Supreme Court.

Parents who’ve had their drivers license suspended for overdue child support payments will have a chance to get back on the road…

Over 12-hundred people packed into Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Lafayette for the funeral of U-L Lafayette Baseball Coach Tony Robichaux. Robichaux died last Wednesday at the age of 57 following a heart attack. Several former players were on hand, including Jonathan Lucroy, who was hospitalized Sunday night in Houston following a nasty collision at home plate in an extra-inning loss to the Astros. Lucroy suffered a concussion and broken nose but was one an honorary pallbearer.

The Pelicans summer league team defeated the Chicago Bulls 109 to 72 yesterday. Jaxson Hayes had a huge game as he scored 28 points and was 10-of-15 from the floor. Nickeil Alexander-Walker had 23 points and three three-pointers. New Orleans will play again tomorrow night against Cleveland.

For the second straight year, former LSU star Alex Bregman was bounced out of the Homerun Derby in the first round. Bregman fell to Dodgers outfielder Joc Pederson. Pederson went on to lose in the semi-finals in an epic battle against Vladimir Guerrero Junior. Mets Rookie Pete Alonso was the eventual Home Run Derby champion.

Tonight is the All-Star game in Cleveland, Bregman will start for the American League All-Star team. He’ll bat sixth and play third base. Another former Tiger, D-J LeMahieu, will bat second for the American League and play second base. If the game goes into extra innings, there will be a new rule, as a runner will start the inning standing at second base.

A six-person jury has been chosen in Matthew Naquin’s hazing death trial. Naquin has been charged with negligent homicide and obstruction of justice in the suspected alcohol-related hazing death of LSU student Max Gruver in 2017. Opening statements are scheduled for Thursday.

Starting August 1st the Department of Children and Family Services is giving parents who are behind on child support the opportunity to get their drivers license back without having to pay off everything they owe immediately. Hundreds paid their final respects today to Ragin Cajuns Baseball Coach Tony Robichaux, who died last week following a heart attack. A touching funeral was held in Lafayette. Robichaux was praised as a man of faith and more than just a baseball coach to the hundreds of young men he had a chance to mold during his time as the head baseball coach at McNeese and U-L Lafayette. Smith played for Mainieri at Notre Dame and he’s been an assistant coach at Virginia, Notre Dame and Santa Clara and had a successful stint as a head coach on the junior college level in his home state of Washington.
