Over 40 students at two schools in Tangipahoa Parish have been arrested for fighting. 32 students are facing a disturbing the peace charge at Independence High School for fights that happened Tuesday and yesterday. Eight more students at Ponchatoula High School are facing the same charge and possible penalties include expulsion.

Louisiana will invest nearly six-million dollars into a new center for bariatric and metabolic surgery at LSU’s Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge. The End All Hazing Act has been amended to the Higher Education Act.

A sheriff’s deputy and teacher in Livingston Parish are in jail on child porn charges. 44-year-old Dennis Perkins and 34-year-old Cynthia Perkins, a teacher at Westside Junior High in Walker, are each facing 60 counts of producing child pornography and two counts of first-degree rape. Dennis Perkins has also been booked on two counts of video voyeurism.

LSU’s Pennington Biomedical Research Center is adding a metabolic surgery center that will allow the Baton Rouge facility to research new tools in the fight against obesity. Pennington’s Executive Director John Kirwan says the new program will help them research how lap band surgery can reverse Type Two diabetes.

The program is expected to create 55 jobs and attract more than 20-million dollars in obesity research money.

For the first time, Louisianans will have the opportunity this Saturday on National Prescription Drug Take Back day to also dispose of their vaping and e-cigarette devices and cartridges. The state reports vaping products have been linked to 25 cases associated with a national outbreak of lung injury cases.

For the first time ever, Louisianans can dispose of their vaping and e-ciagarette devices and cartridges, along with unused medications on National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday. Assistant State Health Officer Dr. Joseph Kanter says there will be no questions asked as to the type of vape products turned in.

Baton Rouge TV stations are reporting the arrest of a high-ranking Livingston Parish Sheriff’s deputy and his wife, who is a school teacher in Livingston. The teacher, Cynthia Perkins, was booked on child porn and child rape charges. Her husband, Daniel Perkins has been charged with obstruction of justice. The A-G’s office is handling the investigation.

A mother claims that an officer with the Carencro Police Department broke the wrist of her autistic son during an encounter last week. The woman says police went too far when they came to their apartment complex after receiving complaints about her son, David Moody. Louisiana’s Insurance Commissioner is warning motorists looking for a used car to be on the lookout for vehicles flooded in Texas by Tropical Storm Imelda. Insurance department spokesperson John Tobler says in Louisiana if a vehicle is flooded and totaled the vehicles have to submit a certificate of destruction, but that’s not the case in Texas.

State Police say they’ve apprehended a Raceland man and charged him with his 10th DWI. Senior Trooper Jesse LaGrange says 34-year-old Jessie Jospeh was driving 89 miles per hour in a 70-mile per hour speed zone when was pulled over and subsequently failed a standard sobriety test. A Natchitoches Parish logging operation is shut down after vandals destroyed two vital pieces of equipment in Winn Parish.
