The Saints will now get ready to host the Bucaneers.

The fifth ranked LSU football team is gearing up to host Utah State this Saturday. The Aggies are led by quarterback Jordan Love who has thrown for over 6,000 yards and 40 touchdowns in his career. Coach Ed Orgeron is hopeful a couple of defensive starters will return for Saturday’s game. He says pass rusher K’Lavon Chaisson is questionable, while defensive end Rashard Lawrence and linebacker Michael Divinity will try to practice this wee. Defensive end Glen Logan is out.

Ragin Cajuns linebacker Jacques Boudreaux has been named Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week. The senior from New Orleans is the first Cajun to earn the defensive honor since 2014. Boudreaux had a career-high 12 tackles in U-L Lafayette’s 37-34 win over Georgia Southern. The Cajuns next game is Wednesday October 9th at home against Appalachian State.

In the Southland, Southeastern Louisiana is one of two teams in the league that is 2-0 in conference play. The Lions handed Northwestern State another loss last Saturday in Natchitoches as S-L-U thumped the Demons 44-27. Chason Virgil threw for 344 yards in the game. Southeastern is at McNeese this Saturday. The Cowboys are coming off a 28-17 loss to Sam Houston State.

Also this Saturday, Nicholls hosts Central Arkansas.

Also Good news about the LSU-Florida game on October 12th, the SEC has announced the conference home opener will kick off at 7 PM on October 12th.

It was an impressive defensive performance from the Saints defense last night as the Black and Gold gave up just one touchdown in a 12-10 win over Dallas. It was a long night for Cowboys star running back Ezekiel Elliot as he was held to 35 yards on 18 carries. The defense also forced three turnovers.

The Saints offense did not find the end zone, but they owned the time of possession, possessing the ball for 36-minutes. Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater threw for 193 yards and one interception. He was also sacked five times.

The Saints 12 points came on four field goals from Wil Lutz. Thomas Morestad had another good night punting the football, with two punts inside the Dallas 20 and an average of 44 yards a punt.

The Saints are now 3-and-1, one game ahead of Tampa Bay and Carolina. The Bucs stunned the Rams and the Panthers defeated the Texans. The Saints will host the Buccaneers this Sunday for a noon kickoff in the Mercedes Benz Superdome.

LSU didn’t play this past weekend, but fell in the AP Top 25 and coaches poll. The Tigers are ranked 5th in the AP poll, sixth in the coaches poll. After Clemson survived by just one point against North Carolina, Alabama moved into the top spot in both polls. Ohio State, who was impressive in September has moved past the Tigers in the polls. LSU hosts Utah State this Saturday.

Louisiana Tech gets this Saturday off after beating winless Rice in overtime 23-20. J’Mar Smith’s rushing touchdown was the winning score. Smith also threw for 210 yards and a score.

ULM’s Caleb Evans threw for 286 yards and three touchdowns as ULM defeated South Alabama 30-17 in the Sun Belt opener for both teams.

The Ragin Cajuns knocked off Georgia Southern 37-24, Elijah Mitchell and Trey Ragas each scored two touchdowns. U-L Lafayette has won four in a row and they’ll play again on October 9th against Appalachian State in a rematch of last year’s Sun Belt Championship game won by the Mountaineers.

The Cowboys beat the Saints 13-10 last year. Drew Brees threw for just 127 yards and Alvin Kamara was held to 36 yards rushing.

And the injury report shows Brees, Will Clapp and TreQuan Smith out for Sunday’s game, but Sheldon Rankins is questionable, opening the door for the defensive tackle to return to game action for the first time since tearing his achilles tendon last January.

The Ragin Cajuns and ULM begin play in the Sun Belt Saturday. The Cajuns are at Georgia Southern. While the Warhawks host South Alabama. ULM lost by 52 at Iowa State last Saturday, while UL-Lafayette is coming off a road win over Ohio.

Louisiana Tech has a Conference USA tilt against winless Rice. The Bulldogs have won five straight matchups against the Owls. Kick-off is at 6 PM. Tech is also trying to improve to 2-and-0 in league play.

Nicholls is also in the Lone Star state to face old Southland rival Texas State. The Colonels are ranked ninth in one FCS poll. The Bobcats are just one and three on the year.

Northwestern State will look to break through the win column when they take on Southeastern Louisiana. The Lions are ranked 19th in an FCS Poll. Cox Sports Television will broadcast this game.

McNeese hosts Sam Houston in a battle of two and two teams. The Cowboys lost their Southland opener last week.

Grambling looks for its first win at Prarie View in a game played in Dallas and Southern visits Arkansas Pine Bluff. Jaguars Coach Dawson Odums says he would like to get the run game going.

Voters casting their ballots early can expect to do so with new voting equipment.  Lafayette Parish Registrar of Voters Charlene Meaux-Menard says participants will receive a voter card to insert into the machines that will pull up their ballot on a touchscreen.

Meaux-Menard says the machines are not connected to the internet and store the voting data to memory sticks inside the computer.

A We Ask America poll of the governor’s race has Governor Edwards at 47 percent, Eddie Rispone at 23 percent, and Ralph Abraham at 17 percent.

Pollster Andrew Weissert says Edwards continues to sit just shy of avoiding a run-off because while he has a 56 percent approval rating, voters still aren’t confident he’s righted the ship.

The poll did have one encouraging bit of news for Edwards, 61 percent of independents have a favorable view of him.

It’s the second independent poll to show Rispone climbing ahead of Abraham. Weissert says the GOP side of the race will be fascinating because if they can’t force a run-off, neither of their efforts matter.

The poll surveyed 600 likely voters and has a four percent margin of error.

Weissert says If Edwards remains stuck under 50 percent and gets thrown into a run-off, the Governor could be in big trouble, as Republicans appear ready to unite behind either option.

The poll has 11 percent undecided, with two percent saying they’ll vote for Independent Gary Landrieu.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is hosting National Hunting and Fishing Day celebrations at four locations around the state on Saturday. LDWF spokesperson Trey Iles says there will be no shortage of activities, including fishing.

The events are in Baton Rouge, Haughton, Woodworth and Monroe. Iles says the goal is to get kids more active outdoors as opposed to hooked on technology.

The candidates were asked about their view of capital punishment last night at the second gubernatorial debate, with the two Republicans staking opposite claims while the Governor differed.

Baton Rouge Businessman Eddie Rispone, now the top polling Republican in the race, was the only person on stage to come out against the practice.

Green Bay fell from the ranks of the unbeaten last night as Doug Pederson and the Eagles flew into cheese land and defeated the Packers 34-27.

There are several big high school football games tonight. Two of the best teams in Class Four-A, St. Thomas More and Neville meet in Lafayette. Edna Karr travels to Baton Rouge to face the Catholic Bears. Undefeated Sterlington is at North Webster. West Monroe hosts Evangel. It’s the first time these two schools have played each other since the 2004 Class 5A championship game won by the Eagles.

No LSU football game on Saturday, but there will be a few college football games played in the state tomorrow. ULM hosts South Alabama in the Warhawks Sun Belt opener. The funeral is today for fallen Mandeville Police Captain Vincent Liberto who was fatally shot in the line of duty last week. Visitation begins at 9 AM at the Castine Center in Pelican Park and the funeral will begin at noon. A 21-year-old Covington man has been charged with killing Liberto and shooting another officer, who has reportedly made a full recovery.

A Legislative Fiscal Office analysis of the estimated 500-million-dollar state budget surplus credits most of the higher-than-expected revenue to the 2017 federal tax reform. Chief Economist Greg Albrecht says the state’s economy is improving, but it’s not the biggest reason for the huge surplus…
