President Trump tweets encouragement for Republicans to vote for either Ralph Abraham or Eddie Rispone in the gubernatorial primary, calling them both “great”. Rispone has vaulted past Abraham in the polls for 2nd place with the help of some tough anti-Abraham attacks. UL Lafayette Poli Sci Professor Pearson Cross says Abraham needs to return fire.

The number of restaurants that have received citations for not properly identifying foreign shrimp or crawfish on their menus has exceeded 150 since September 1st. At Christmas five years ago, LSU grad Katelyn Williams came home and told her family she was going to make ice cream. When she learned her sister couldn’t have dairy anymore, it spawned what is now Kate’s Ice Cream, a dairy-free, gluten-free ice cream business in Portland, Oregon.

The 2013 LSU grad and Lafayette native has developed several different flavors, including peaches and cayenne. Her goal over the next year is to have nationwide shipping available for plant-based ice cream.

A new law signed in California will allow college athletes to be paid for the use of their image, name or likeness, starting in 2023. LSU QB Joe Burrow says the legislation is a step in the right direction for athletes.

Two teams good at throwing the football will meet Saturday in Tiger Stadium when 5th ranked LSU hosts Utah State. Utah State is led by six-foot-four quarterback Jordan Love, who Coach Ed Orgeron says will play on Sundays soon

The Ragin Cajuns and head football coach Billy Napier have agreed to a contract extension that keeps Napier on contract through the 2023 season. UL-Lafayette is off to a four-and-one start, after winning the Sun Belt Conference Western Division last season. The Cajuns next game is a Wednesday, October ninth, versus Appalachian State.

ULM hosts 23rd ranked Memphis this Saturday. The Tigers are 4-and-0, while the Warhawks are coming off a 30-17 win over South Alabama. Memphis is believed to be the first ranked opponent to visit Malong Stadium in the NCAA Football Subdivision Era. Kick-off is at 2:45.

The Saints will begin preparations for Tampa Bay tomorrow. The Bucs are coming off an upset win over the Rams and remember last season.

In the high school football polls, Calvary Baptist has moved to the Top spot in Class One-A. John Curtis is number one in Five-A, while St. Thomas More is number one in Four-A. The Cougars host the Catholic Bears on Friday as Catholic is ranked second in Five-A.

Violent crime in Louisiana was down three percent year to year in 2018, and the murder rate is down down eight points according to new FBI crime data.

LSU Health New Orleans Criminologist Peter Sharf says the murder rate decline is largely thanks to an 8 percent drop in the Crescent City.

2019’s murder rate decrease maybe even more dramatic as Sharf says New Orleans appears set to see a nearly 30 percent drop in violent crime this year.

Sharf credits reinvestment from the criminal justice reform, new crime prevention programs in New Orleans, and statewide adoption of 21st-century police training programs.

The state also saw a three percent decrease in property crime.

Despite the good news Louisiana still leads the nation with the highest murder rate, and Sharf says our murder rate is roughly ten times that of New York’s. He says there’s a lot of work to be done.

Nationwide the violent crime rate was also down three percent.

Ruston’s recovery from last April’s deadly EF-3 tornado has stalled due to the wait for FEMA assistance reimbursement. Mayor Ronny Walker says debris was removed and power restored in the days after the twister, but recovery efforts are going slower than desired now.

The city owns its own power distribution and dipped into reserve funds to restore electricity within four days.  Walker says it was much quicker than the initially anticipated two weeks.

Five miles of the city’s fiber network had to be replaced.  Walker says they are punching the numbers on the FEMA reimbursement.

Last month was the warmest September on record for the state dating back to 1895.  State climatologist Barry Keim says after calculating a preliminary value for the entire state, the state exceeded the previous record by half a degree.

Keim says a city-by-city breakdown shows it was hot.

Keim credits the heat spike to a lack of cold front activity.

A new law signed in California will allow college athletes to hire agents and make money from the use of their image, name or likeness, starting in 2023.  LSU QB Joe Burrow says he believes it is a step in the right direction for athletes.

California is the first state to pass a law that defies the NCAA’s stance on compensation for amateur athletes.  Burrow says it will be interesting to see if it sways recruits, but he’s unsure if it would have influenced his decision in recruiting.

Burrow was asked about how the compensation could be possibly spread to the offensive linemen who may not have the same name recognition but contribute to a QB’s performance.

LSU Football Coach Ed Orgeron says the Tigers defense will be challenged this Saturday when they host Utah State. Orgeron says the Aggies spread offense performs at a faster tempo than any opponent they’ll see this season. That might not be good news for an LSU defense allowing 23 points a game. Orgeron says they used the bye week to spend time on tackling and improving players’ technique…

Orgeron hopes the Tigers can get a couple of injured players back on the field. He says defensive end Rashard Lawrence and linebackers K’Lavon Chaisson and Michael Divinity are gimpy, but they are back at practice.

Training camp is underway for rookie sensation Zion Williamson and the Pelicans as they gear up for the 2019-2020 season. Williamson is already considered one of the best players in the NBA and he’s yet to play a game in the association. Zion says he can’t focus on the outside noise…

The Pelicans first preseason game is Monday against Atlanta. The regular-season opener is October 22nd in Toronto.

The Saints are off today after beating Dallas 12-10 on Sunday night. It’s the Black and Gold’s first win without scoring a touchdown since 1998. New Orleans defense has risen to the occasion since Drew Brees went down with a thumb injury. Safety Von Bell has really stepped up his game, against Dallas he had 10 tackles and leads the team in tackles with 31. New Orleans is back at the Dome on Sunday to host Dallas.

A new gasoline tax goes into effect today in Arkansas as the gas tax in the Natural State will rise by three-cents to 24.5 cents a gallon and diesel fuel goes up an additional six-cents. It’s the first change in Arkansas fuel taxes in 20 years and it’s expected to generate an additional 95-million dollars.

Ouachita Parish sheriff deputies are looking for a missing five-year-old black Labrador Retriever by the name of “Ace.” Chief Deputy Marc Mashaw says they suspect 44-year-old Lester Langley of Monroe sold the dog after he was paid by Ace’s owners to train the lab for duck hunting…

A new study ranks Louisiana as having the ninth-worst overall transportation infrastructure in the United States. Louisiana Good Roads and Transportation Association President Ken Perret says the study shows poor roads cost the average Louisiana driver 624-dollars a year in vehicle and operating costs and only six states have a higher percentage of structurally deficient bridges than Louisiana…

Perret calls on all gubernatorial and legislative candidates to be open and honest with voters on how they will address transportation issues.

Saints and Pelicans owner Gayle Benson has reportedly donated 50-thousand dollars to the Gumbo PAC, which is a Super PAC dedicated to re-electing Democratic Governor John Bel Edwards. Gumbo PAC has produced TV ads attacking Edwards two Republican challengers, Ralph Abraham, and Eddie Rispone.
