LSU Quarterback Joe Burrow has been named a semifinalist for the Maxwell Award, which goes to the Collegiate Player of the Year. And LSU cornerback Derek Stingley Junior is the semifinalist for the Bednarik Award which goes to the best defensive player in college football. Stingley is the only freshman on that list.

The Pelicans will shoot for its first win of the season tonight when they host the Denver Nuggets at 8:30 PM inside the Smoothie King Center. Denver is 3-and-1 and coming off a home loss to Dallas. The Pels are coming off a loss to Golden State. Guard Jrue Holiday and center Derrick Favors didn’t play in that game, because of injuries. Coach Alvin Gentry says their status for tonight will be decided at game time.

The only debate before the November 16th election was a spirited one last night. Right out of the gate, there was a heated discussion between Governor John Bel Edwards and Eddie Rispone on Medicaid expansion. Rispone previously proposed freezing enrollment in an effort to tackle some of the program’s issues…

Governor Edwards says a freeze to enrollment would result in 300,000 people losing healthcare.

The night also saw the two argue over criminal justice reform, job creation, infrastructure, and taxes. And Edwards attacked Rispone’s lack of interest in holding any other debates, while Rispone says he’s busy campaigning around the state.

It will be a chilly night for trick-or-treating. National Weather Service Shreveport Meteorologist Aaron Davis says temperatures tonight will be about 20 degrees colder than what we’ve been used to over the past week.

Saban says Tua took some snaps yesterday but was not involved in any team drills. Meanwhile, LSU Coach Ed Orgeron says safety Grant Delpit should be available to play when the Tigers face Alabama. Delpit suffered an ankle injury in the win over Auburn.

ULM returns from a bye week to host Arkansas State for homecoming Saturday. The Warhawks are 3-and-4 overall, two and one in the Sun Belt West Division and tied with the Ragin Cajuns for first place. ULM coach Matt Viator says he’s still waiting to see his team can play a complete game…

Former LSU Tiger Alex Bregman hit a home run last night, but it came in a loss to the Nationals and he apologized afterwards for carrying his bat up the first base line.

Through eight games, Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas leads the NFL with 73 carches for 875 yards. Thomas is on pace to catch 146 passes, which would break Marvin Harrison’s single season NFL record when the former Colt caught 143 passes in 2002.

In the high school football polls, Lafayette Christian is the new number one ranked team in Two-A. Newman was ranked number one last week, but lost by one point to St. Charles Catholic. Notre Dame has moved to two in the rankings, St. Charles Catholic is third, Newman fourth and Ferriday is ranked fifth. Just two more weeks left in the regular season.

Livingston Parish Sheriff Jason Ard speaks publicly for the first time, defending his decision to keep SWAT Commander Dennis Perkins on staff. Perkins and his wife are accused of sex crimes involving children.

WBRZ detailed a Baton Rouge cop’s 2013 allegation of improper conduct against his step-child by Perkins. Ard blames the officer for not putting the allegation in writing.

Ard says the “verbal investigation” unveiled no sexual misconduct and determined Perkins was just “tickling” the child.

Ard further defended his office’s decision to retain Perkins in light of the 2013 allegation…

The Sheriff says there are no reports of incidents or allegations against Perkins’ in his official file.

WBRZ also uncovered a 2011 restraining order filed against Perkins over allegedly using his LPSO vehicle to stalk someone. Ard says they had no record of it in administration.

Four contractors are expected to submit bids by Friday with their plans on how to clear the site of the Hard Rock Hotel collapse.  New Orleans Fire Chief Tim McConnell says an exact timeline on demolition is unclear.

McConnell says the responsibility of taking down the building is on the property owner, but the city has been hands-on with the analysis of the demolition plans.

McConnell says public safety is the top priority in the handling of the site, but there is still a focus on how to recover the two dead bodies that remain inside the structure.

The building collapsed October 12th, killing three and injuring numerous others.  The cause of the collapse remains unknown.

The nation’s report card ranks Louisiana between 44th and 49th in math and reading assessments. However, the report shows the state has made more improvement than any other state in 8th grade math. State Superintendent of Education John White says the findings indicate the state is turning around.

Eighth graders were ranked 48th for math. White says among the challenges to tackle in Louisiana is attracting STEM teachers to the education field.

The state ranked 49th on the ACT, down from 45th last year. Louisiana is one of 15 states requiring all high school students to take the ACT and ranked 13th among those, only ahead of Mississippi and Nevada. White says those results are a letdown.

The state composite ACT score was 18.8, down from 19.2 last year, compared to the national average of 20.7, which is also down just slightly from 20.8 last year. Results are based on a scale of 1-36.
