Its tax day and there are some people seeing higher refunds this year. John Theriot is a CPA with Malcolm Dienes in Metairie and he says recent changes to federal and state income tax laws were designed to put more money in your pocket, but that’s not the only reason for the bigger refunds…

He says he hasn’t seen the same for self-employed individuals but adjusting  quarterly payments could make a difference.

According to an Associated Press report, the average cost of a new vehicle is 50-thousand dollars. That’s up 30-percent in six years. UNO economist Walter Lane says if you are planning on buying a new car, spreading out the payments over five to seven year period can help reduce the monthly note, or just keep driving what you are driving…

A July sixth trial date has been set for three people charged in connection with a scheme that led to the death of a Kansas City sports reporter during the Super Bowl last year. Danette Colbert, Christian Anderson and Rickey White are accused of drugging and killing 27 year old Adan Manzano, who was found dead in a Kenner hotel room.  All three have pled not guilty.

LSU baseball ended a four-game losing streak with a four to two win over Northwestern State. Jake Brown’s 424-foot, 3-run home run in the fifth inning was the difference.

Louisiana Tech won its seventh straight, a nine to three win over Little Rock. Casey McCoy and Cade Patterson each had three hits and drove in two runs.

McNeese beat Grambling seven to three and Nicholls lost to South Alabama four to three.

To participate in a Democratic primary, you have to be registered as either Democrat or no party. Landry says if you can’t register or switch your party affiliation in person, you still have until April 25th to do it online at geauxvote.com.

Any updates submitted by mail must be postmarked by April 15. Third party voters, such as members of the Green or Libertarian parties, cannot participate in Democratic or Republican primaries but may vote in eligible races, propositions, and constitutional amendments.

LSU football’s defense has dominated the offense so far in spring practice. Coach Lane Kiffin says he was discouraged by his offense’s performance in Saturday’s scrimmage, where the quarterbacks combined to throw five interceptions, but he also acknowledged there will be growing pains with transfer quarterback Sam Leavitt not currently participating.

One of the biggest surprises of LSU’s spring practice has been fifth-year senior offensive lineman Bo Bordelon taking first-team reps at left guard. Coach Lane Kiffin said Bordelon has been very impressive this spring.

One of the most competitive positions this spring has been defensive tackle. Kiffin says true freshman Deuce Geralds has stood out and believes he will be a productive player for the Tigers this season.

The Pelicans finished 26-56 in Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations Joe Dumars’ first season with the franchise. Dumars dismissed Willie Green 10 games into the season, and assistant coach James Borrego took over on an interim basis to close out the year. Dumars says Borrego has proven himself as a strong candidate for the permanent job and will be under consideration.

Zion Williamson has become a potential trade candidate this offseason, but Dumars said he wants to keep the star in New Orleans and has no plans to move him.

Also heading to the House floor is a measure that would shield the revenue share dollars student athletes receive from a public university. Alexandria Representative Ed Larvadain says that financial information should stay private to protect the student…

But opponents say revenue share deals are public dollars and should not be exempted from the state’s public records law.

 

Should Louisiana drivers have to pass a driver’s knowledge test every six years to renew their license? That is a proposal Baton Rouge Representative Dixon McMakin brought before the House Transportation Committee. McMakin says Louisiana has its share of bad drivers and requiring regular driving tests can result in fewer crashes…

Several House Transportation members have reservations about the proposed legislation. Lawmakers are for safer roads, but Monroe Representative Pat Moore says requiring drivers to take a test every six years is too much…

McMakin tabled his bill but might bring it up for another vote at a later date.

LSU football coach Lane Kiffin confirmed that sophomore cornerback and Ruston native Aidan Anding will miss the entire 2026 season after suffering a torn Achilles during Saturday’s scrimmage at Tiger Stadium.

Former LSU star Flau’jae Johnson was the eighth overall selection by the Golden State Valkyries in Monday night’s WNBA draft. Shortly after, Johnson was traded to the Seattle Storm in exchange for the draft rights to Marta Suarez and a 2028 second-round pick. Johnson says being drafted is a dream come true.

Front Office Sports is reporting that Louisiana Tech will pay Conference USA an exit fee that’s north of $8 million. Tech is expected to join the Sun Belt Conference this summer.

LSU senior Jayce Brown was one of nine transfer wide receivers who chose to take his talents to Baton Rouge. Brown says practices at LSU under Lane Kiffin have been much more intense than what he is used to, but he believes it will pay off in the long run.

The LSU baseball team will look to get back in the win column tonight when it hosts Northwestern State at 6:30 p.m. The Tigers have lost four straight games, and the Demons are coming off a series loss against Houston Christian.

Louisiana Tech looks to stay hot tonight as the Bulldogs host Little Rock tonight at 6. Tech is looking to win its seventh straight game.

The House Transportation Committee has put the brakes on a bill that would require drivers to take a driver’s knowledge test when they renew their driver’s license every six years. Baton Rouge Representative Dixon McMakin says the test would provide drivers with a refresher on the rules of the road. Monroe Representative Pat Moore says it’s too much. Instead, require drivers to watch an online video containing basic rules of the road and tips on how to be a safer driver.

McMakin says he’ll look at revising his proposal and bring it up for debate at a later date.

A 13-year-old student shot his father in front of the Tangipahoa Alternative School in Hammond this morning. Hammond Police Chief Edwin Bergeron says the teen refused to get out of his father’s vehicle to attend school, so his father decided to take him home and that is when the boy shot his father causing the vehicle to accelerate and hit a home across the street. Bergeron says after the collision, the armed 13-year-old started walking to the school, but the school resource officer acted quickly to disarm the teen

The father is in stable condition.

The Public Affairs Research Council spoke in opposition to the bill. PAR president Steven Procopio says athletic departments now receive tax revenue from online gambling, so the taxpayer should have the right to know how the school spends it…

A father was shot by his 13-year-old son in front of the Tangipahoa Alternative School in Hammond this morning. Hammond Police Chief Edwin Bergeron says the father was dropping his son off at school, when his son refused to leave the vehicle, so the father decided to take him back home and that’s when he was shot. The car traveled across the street and struck a home. The armed teen, then started walking toward the school. Fortunately, a school resource officer was able to disarm him and he was taken to a juvenile facility.

The father is in stable condition at a local hospital.

State Police are investigating a weekend hit and run that claimed the life of a 24-year-old Cyclist in St. Tammany Parish. It happened after midnight Sunday morning on a poorly lit stretch of Highway 40 in the Folsom area. Troopers say Rodrigo Ornelas Jr was riding a bicycle east when a dark colored sedan or small SUV hit struck him and fled the scene. Ornelas succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital.
