One million dollars in federal grant money is coming to Louisiana to train residents needed as employees in the state’s growing business climate. A large portion of the funds will be used for training in the technical services, manufacturing, health care, and professional employment sectors. The grant money will be administered by the Louisiana Workforce Commission and targets the Alexandria, Shreveport, and Monroe areas.

The process of disposing 15 million pounds of M-6 propellant at Camp Minden can begin as Baton Rouge based Explosive Service International signs a $19 million contract with the Louisiana National Guard. Guard spokesman Col. Pete Schneider says they aren’t sure of the exact date of when the disposal will begin, but they are hosting public meetings to keep the Webster Parish community up to date…

The state’s unemployment rate remains at 6.6-percent for the third straight month, despite more people finding jobs. Numbers show that payrolls rose by 4,000 last month. The US Department of Labor says 146,000 Louisianians were unemployed in May.

Four LSU football players have been suspended indefinitely after being arrested Thursday. Quarterback Anthony Jennings, cornerback Dwayne Thomas, and defensive lineman Maquedius Bain were booked on unauthorized entry into an inhabited dwelling charge. Thomas is also charged with simple burglary. Authorities say the three claim they were trying to retrieve items previously stolen from Jennings. Defensive tackle Trey Lealaimatafao is charged with simple battery and felony simple robbery stemming from an incident at a local bar. Team officials say the two incidents are not connected.

A Calcasieu Parish grand jury has indicted a former Lake Charles Charter Academy teacher for allegedly having inappropriate contact with students. 35-year-old Sommer Odom faces four counts of oral sexual battery, three counts of molestation of a juvenile, and one count of sexual battery. If convicted, Odom faces up to 80 years in prison.
