A new poll released by Southern Media and Opinion Research finds Governor John Bel Edwards’ approval rating is at 63-percent. That’s a 13-percent increase from May. Pollster Bernie Pinsonat says there is a saying by a lot elected officials, you never let a crisis go by without taking advantage of it. He says that what Edwards did by being very visible during the tragic shootings and the flooding.

Pinsonat says the governor still faces some hurdles, especially with housing issues after the flooding. But he says this popularity will likely benefit him during the upcoming legislative session.

The survey also finds presidential candidate, Democrat Hillary Clinton, has an unfavorable rating in Louisiana of 60-percent. Pinsonat says Republican Donald Trump has shot in front of her by a good margin and is very popular with white voters in Louisiana.

According to the poll, if the election were held today, 49-percent would vote for Trump, 33-percent for Clinton, and 8-percent for Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson. Pinsonat says Trump has high negatives in Louisiana, at 47-percent, but that’s not anywhere near as bad as Clinton’s.

Today is the start of the fall season and Louisianans can expect above average temperatures and below normal rainfall. That’s according to state climatologist Barry Keim. Keim says the basis for this forecast is due to a high probability for a La Nina.

Keim says Louisiana had one of the wettest summers on record in 2016 but there will be a shift in that pattern with dryer than normal conditions over the next three months.

Governor John Bel Edwards is in Washington, D.C., today continuing the ongoing battle to get federal funding for flood recovery efforts in Louisiana. Edwards says he is optimistic they can get something done before lawmakers recess at the end of the month for the November election.

Republican lawmakers are making the push for Louisiana funding, but Democrats want to include funding for the Flint, Michigan water crisis in the spending bill as well. The state has requested $2.6 billion in federal funding, but Edwards doesn’t expect to get the full amount at once.

The initial flood recovery dollars would be contained in a stop-gap funding bill that would prevent a government shutdown. Edwards hopes it will be approved this month and Congress will approve more funding during the “lame duck” winter session. He says what we need immediately is help with housing.

The investigation is ongoing in Lafayette parish about a body that was discovered in a tool box on the side of the road. Cpl. Bridgett Dugas says they have connected the victim, Alannah Montalvo, with the naked man who was recently shot and killed while trespassing.

Dugas says Montalvo was in a relationship with the naked trespasser, 36-year-old Barrett Farabee. She says they still do not know the exact cause of death for Montalvo, but they do have a suspect in Farabee.

Dugas says police are actively searching for the vehicle the couple was travelling in, a green Honda Accord. She asks anyone who sees the vehicle to contact police.

The Saints have put cornerback PJ Williams on injured reserve, after the second-year pro as carted off the field last Sunday after taking a knee to the helmet twice while trying to make a tackle. NFL analyst Mike Detillier says the Saints are snakebit at this position as they’ve lost several cornerbacks this year because of injuries…

The Saints have lost several cornerbacks this season due to injuries. They are expected to get Delvin Breaux back, but he’ll still miss several weeks because of a broken fibula. Detillier says the Saints defense played well last week, but it will be tough for them to keep that level of play up…

A new independent poll on the US Senate race in Louisiana finds Republican Treasurer John Kennedy is still in the lead with 17-percent. The Southern Media and Opinion Research survey has Republican Congressman Charles Boustany on Kennedy’s heels at 15-percent. Pollster Bernie Pinsonat says the poll shows there are five candidates who can still make the runoff.

A West Monroe police officer is in the process of being reinstated after being found not guilty of negligent homicide for shooting a man in 2014. Officer Jody LeDoux shot Raymond Martinez, who evidence found to be drunk and belligerent outside of a store. Defense Attorney Mickey Dubose says he was confident LeDoux acted properly….

A new study from Triple A finds millions of drivers are wasting their money on premium gasoline. Spokesperson Don Redman says they encourage people to check their car’s owner’s manual to see what kind of gas their car requires. He says 70-percent of vehicles on the road just need regular gas.

Redman says some high end vehicles do require premium gas because of the way the engine is calibrated and the only differences between regular and premium gas are the octane levels and the price.

Lafayette Police are looking for answers in the case of a woman’s body that was discovered in a tool box. Authorities say the victim, Alannah Montalvo, has a connection with the naked man who was shot and killed while trespassing in the yard of a home on Fanny Street. Montalvo is believed to be in a relationship with the trespasser, 36-year-old Barrett Farabee. Farabee is a suspect in her murder.

LSU enrollment numbers are in and the Baton Rouge campus has set records. The incoming freshman class is the most academically talented class with composite ACT scores of 25.6 and average GPA of 3.4. The enrollment of African American and Hispanic students is at an all-time high. Louisiana Tech also saw record enrollment numbers. The freshman class topped 2-thousand, which is the largest in the schools history.

A former LSU player told a Baton Rouge radio station that Tigers Quarterback Brandon Harris received death threats following the season opening loss to Wisconsin, and it really bothered him. Jamie Howard, who was the starting quarterback for LSU in the early 90s, said he gave Harris some advice because he was having a hard time with the death threats.

Meanwhile, the Tigers continue preparations for Saturday’s match-up with the Auburn Tigers. LSU Linebacker Kendell Beckwith and safety Jamal Adams are two of LSU’s leading tacklers. LSU defensive coordiantor Dave Aranda says believes those two can be bigger playmakers as the season goes along…

LSU’s defense produced six sacks last week, while Auburn ranks last among FBS schools in sacks given up with nine.

Several NFL reporters say the Saints will likely put cornerback PJ Williams on injured reserve. Williams was carted off the field last Sunday after taking a knee to the helmet twice while trying to make a tackle. He lost consciousness and spent the night at a local hospital. Coach Sean Payton said yesterday that Williams is fine. Williams spent all of last year on injured reserve, because of a hamsting injury.

Northwestern State is looking to avoid an 0-4 start when they visit Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday. The Demons have been struggling on offense. The most points they’ve scored in a game this year is 18, which they did in a 21-18 loss to Incarnate Word.

Grambling’s offense has been clicking. The Tigers won their SWAC opener last week by beating Jackson State 35-14. This Saturday Grambling hosts Alcorn State at 6 PM.

Louisiana Tech looks for a much better performance this Saturday when they visit Middle Tennessee for the Conference USA opener.

A grand jury has rejected murder charges against the two men accused of fatally shooting two Southern University students in April. 25-year-old Brandon Henderson could still stand trial for aggravated assault with a firearm. The grand jury did not take action against 23-year-old Ernest Felton, so right now his charges are in limbo.

Lafayette police are looking for answers after a body was discovered in a tool box. KATC is reporting the naked man who was fatally shot on Fanny Street has a connection to the body that was discovered. Cpl. Bridgett Dugas says they are working to identify the cause of death and how the tool box got on the side of the road.

Dubose says Martinez reached for a silver object inside a newspaper bin that LeDoux believed to be a gun, but it turned out to be a silver flip phone. A total of nine witnesses were called during the trial, including the accused. Dubose says experts also testified about the incident.

Governor John Bel Edwards will host his Ask the Governor program at two o’ cock this afternoon on many of these same stations. The governor is also scheduled to fly into Washington DC tonight to continue conversations with members of Congress about federal flood recovery dollars.

After deliberating for one hour, a six-person jury in Ouachita Parish determined West Monroe Police Officer Jody Ledoux was “Not Guilty” of negligent homicide in the shooting death of Raymond Martinez in December of 2014. Ledoux testified he thought the homeless man was reaching for a gun, when he was pulling a silver and gray cell phone from his pocket. The West Monroe Police Department is holding a news conference at this hour concerning the trial. More on this as it develops.

Program Manager Henry Yennie says disasters in the state commonly unbury tombs so they’ve developed an app that would scan a bar code on a coffin providing identifying information about who is inside.
