US Senator Bill Cassidy announced today that Louisiana has been included in a bill that would give the state $500,000 million dollars in federal disaster relief. The Governor requested $2.8 billion. Cassidy referred to the half billion as a down payment…:

Governor Edwards issued a statement saying he is hopeful and optimistic that the final version of this bill will include this assistance.

DA Hillar Moore announced today that it appears the February shooting of a suicidal man by the six East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s deputies involved, was justified. Officials said EBRSO detectives shot and killed 48-year-old Travis Stevenson after he tried to ram the cops with his vehicle. The detectives involved were placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure, following the incident.

LSU quarterback Brandon Harris received death threats following the Tiger’s devastating season opening loss to Wisconsin. Head coach Les Miles hopes whoever wrote these threats only meant them in a mundane and insincere way but it’s gone too far…:

Harris received one twitter threat telling him to kill himself and another said Harris would be murdered. Miles wants law enforcement involved.

The Military Family Assistance Fund, which was originally set up to support families when a National Guardsman was deployed overseas, is now helping veterans who were affected by the flooding. Veterans eligible for this aid must show proof of service and a FEMA number. Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Col. Joey Strickland says it typically takes about three days for veterans to collect the money…:

Governor John Bel Edwards responded to the video circling Facebook of a house that was poorly repaired under the Shelter at Home Program. He said that particular residence had not been inspected yet and it would have never passed anyway. He reminded listeners on his radio show that the program pays for basic repairs- just enough to make the home livable..:

Louisiana ranks 34th in the nation in overall highway performance and cost-effectiveness in the new Annual Highway Report published by Reason Foundation. The overall ranking is an improvement over the previous report when the state was ranked 40th. The state is 45th in fatality rate, 40th in deficient bridges, 43rd in rural Interstate pavement condition, 49th in urban Interstate pavement condition, and 25th in urbanized area congestion.

Troopers are investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash in Webster Parish, involving a school bus filled with students. They say 35-year-old Freddy Bryant of Shongaloo lost control of his vehicle, crossed the center line in a roadway and crashed head on into the bus. Bryant and his passenger, 29-year-old Gary Matlock of Plain Dealing, died on scene. The driver of the bus and the 47 children on board were not injured in the crash.

Today is the first day of fall, as we say goodbye to a brutal summer of 2016. State Climatologist Barry Keim says Louisiana had one of the wettest summers on record in 2016 but there will be a shift in that pattern with dryer than normal conditions over the next three months…:

That’s according to former LSU quarterback Jamie Howard, who was the starting quarterback for LSU in the early 90s. He told a Baton Rouge radio station that he had to give Harris some advice because the death threats really shook him up. Coach Les Miles says he realizes that games are important to players, coaches and fans, but what happened to Harris is unconscionable…:

LSU kicker Colby Delahoussaye tweeted a picture of his cleats with the numbers of two friends and football players who died in a car crash before the season started this summer. LSU is moving forward with plans to grow medical marijuana for the state. They said the plants will be grown off campus in a secure building that has yet to be determined and no students will be involved. A business plan is expected to be ready by the end of the month, and they want to start growing marijuana by January 1.
