The 2018 high school class sets a record for the number of kids who’ve made the jump to a two-year or four-year college.

Roughly 64 percent of all grads will be entering into higher education and Department of Education Assistant Superintendent  Jessica Baghian says one reason is…

She says other reasons include expanding the Jump Start program along with increasing college credit opportunities and financial aid form assistance.

Louisiana has seen a 23 percent increase in the number of students entering college from high school since 2012. Bahgian says that adds up to 4,626 more students than seven years ago.

1,566 more students decided to enter college in the class of 2018 than the class of 2017.

Baghian says it’s been a banner year overall for the class of 2018, which set records across the board…

29 percent of those who enrolled in a college are set to go to a two year school, versus 71 percent who chose a four year program.

Researchers from LSU’s Pennington Biomedical Research Center and other institutions will study why some people in rural parishes and counties live longer, more healthier lives. Doctor Stephanie Broyles will lead the Louisiana portion of the study and they’ll look at two parishes, Assumption and Franklin…

Broyles says the study has immense potential, because it will figure out what why some rural areas combat health risks better and the information gained can be used by communities to make changes to improve health…

A companion bill to tax the activity proposes a 13 percent tax rate, which Martiny says is about average, and nearly equal to that of Mississippi’s. One percent would be sent to compulsive gambling funds.

Martiny says the best chance it has to pass the House this year is if the legislation does not include add-ons like allowing it at video poker locations. If special interests alter the bill in committee…

But the Metairie Republican is optimistic and thinks Louisiana could have sports betting in the state’s racetracks, riverboat casinos, and land-based casino in New Orleans by the end of the year.

And that’s not the only sports related legislation working it’s way through the chambers as House approved Fantasy sports regulation is halfway to final passage and a bill that would tax the activity will soon receive a hearing in a Senate committee.

As it stands the tax rate for fantasy sports is currently at 15 percent, which Fairness for Fantasy Sports spokesperson Ryan Berni says would be the highest in the nation.

Opponents argue it’s a lower rate than what other gaming activities in the state must pay.

The bill has seen stiff opposition from other gaming interest groups who say fantasy sports should only be accessible from within a casino, or a video poker facility. Berni that would be disregarding the will of 60 percent of voters and 47 parishes that approved the activity last fall. He says it would be a shame to see special interests tank the legislation…

Over 60 percent of voters, and 47 parishes approved the activity last fall, and Fairness for Fantasy Sports spokesperson Ryan Berni says it would be a tragedy to see the will of those voters overturned by gaming lobbyists in the Senate.

State Police say a 21-year-old driver was killed early Sunday morning when his vehicle hit a horse near Hammond. L-S-P says there was a dark colored horse standing in LA 1040 and 21-year-old Javonte Lamone Johnson braked and swerved slightly to the left, but hit the horse. The collision resulted in Johnson’s vehicle overturning and he was ejected.
